Well, if you decide to stop on the way up there and spend the night at my house, I'll get hubby to grill us steaks for dinner.  He has one of those high-tech grills that gets infra-red hot and grills a fantastic steak in about 8 minutes.

If catered doesn't work it's alright.  I'll just bring a few filet mignon's and some charcoal.  Cook a few potatoes prior to leaving and wrap them in some aluminum, some butter and sour cream - as long as I have beer it's all good c2.

Pam, I know you weren't getting on me about it.   I was just explaining that I intended to get on this ASAP, like late this week.  Personally, I would like to have a few catered meals, maybe just dinners.  I don't have much in my trailer except a 2.0 cubic ft. fridge and small  microwave and would have to haul my coleman stove and a bunch of other crap just to fix dinner.  Breakfasts are easier, instant coffee and muffins works just fine.

Karen, I think EF will be cooperative about the meals and provide what we may want.  After all, they make money on it.  One of the questions I was going to ask was the minimum number they would need to do a meal.  I don't even know how many have signed up for the ride.  I think if we can get even just a Saturday dinner, this should not be "optional" but be provided and everyone pays for it.  That's the only fair was to do it for EF.  When I was up there in April, my girlfriend's son came over from college in Cookeville to eat dinner with us, and it cost her $16 for his prime rib dinnner.

Anyhow,

I think if enough of us (and here we need to ask the minimum number) wanted meals, they would be foolish not to provide them, don't you?  Since they have done it at other rides and other times?  Unless the kitchen staff of the place that caters for them is on vacation during the time we are there.

I know Lynne, you are going to work on this when you get more time.  I just asked for my information and no meals are "scheduled that week".  That is what she said, and there is no food at all there that week. I said, "you mean we have to bring all our food?"  and she said yes! So the idea that we could go get breakfast or supper is probably not an option unless everyone agreed to buying catered meals for the 5 days.  I saw where one ride they are having the prime rib at $20 per person.  I am good with that for a Saturday or Sunday with the meet and greet.

About the meals.  I haven't contacted EF yet about any meals but plan to do so this week.  We've been on the go with our kitchen remodel and out getting supplies and just otherwise generally busy so I haven't had time to really sit down and talk to anyone.  I need to make up a "master plan list" prior to calling them so that I can get all questions answered and cover all options.  I'm still hoping that we can plan for dinners, at least Saturday and Sunday and will see what they can offer and at what price.  I think we should definitely plan on a Saturday dinner and meet/greet at the pavilion on Saturday (and that I should request the prime rib dinner).  I just want to see what prices they can give us, the minimum number required, etc., etc., and then will list the options on the Poll section of the MB.

Any feedback any of you want to give about your preferences would be great.  I need ideas by Wednesday.

P.S., I did get Brenda's okay to go ahead with this discussion with EF about meals so it's ok with the boss.

Pam, I am excited this seems to be going to work for you and DH to make it.  Bless him - getting a new truck!  And extra tires is good!

Did Amanda mean that we could NOT get any other meals that week, even if we gathered enough that want to do meals?  Or just that none had been scheduled so far?

Okay, I finally got my deposit paid.  We have moved to campsite #29.  It is supposed to be wider and long enough for our trailer.  We will still be on the picket (high) lines though.  But that is all our horses know anyways.  I talked to Amanda and she  did say that there are no meals offered that week.  So it sounds like meals is  on our own.  Of course the one night of a catered meal to meet each other could still be planned.  DH got mad at his old "Dodge baby" and bought a new one.  I now have US Riders insurance, and we have two spare trailer tires,  so we should be good to go as of right now anyways.:?

Thank you Lynne for being so helpful and keeping us updated on things at EF.

That's good to hear.  EF's stalls are some of the best I've seen at horse camps.  They are about 10x10 with boards on 3 sides and the boards are closely spaced with maybe about 3" gaps between them so they can't get their hoofs caught.  They do have metal pipe gates though and that would would be the only dangerous thing.  I think even if they get their legs caught in pipe gates they can pretty much pull them free without damaging themselves.  I've seen a few stall gates there that have are a bit caved in, but overall I believe they are fairly safe.

Also, for those who are using the stalls who haven't been at EF yet, here's some details for the barns (except Barn A which I haven't been in for years and the ones behind the Fritz and Roanoke cabins).  I was just there 2 weeks ago so my memory hasn't left me yet.  Each stall has a hay rack with rubber feed dish permanently attached below it.  I was going to use my own bucket for feed but the first thing Sam did was go over and lick the whole dish in case someone had left one grain of anything in there, so I figured since he'd already had his mouth in it I might as well use it.  There are bucket hangers in the stall and a water line runs overhead the length of the barn with a short hose and tap running to each stall so you just have to stick the hose through the slat and into the bucket and turn on the water (no lugging full buckets from the end of the barn).  The stall will be clean and a bale of shavings will be in it for you to spread.  You can buy another bale for about $4.65 or so.  Sturdy chains and clasps fasten the door shut.  The middle section of each barn is an aisleway (front to back) and there are wheelbarrows and manure forks there for stall cleaning and a garbags can and a manure pit on the back section of each barn.   There is an overhang of about 5 ft over the outside aisleways with a wooden saddle rack and hook for your halter.  There's room to leave a bale of hay there, too, if you want to.    Another nice thing they do is clip a card to each stall to identify the owner and campsite which is nice in case of an emergency.  Of course every morning I would see the orange card buried in the stall shavings because Sam got bored and pulled it off.   So the equipment you need to haul with you is minimal, pretty much just your own water bucket (and feed bucket if you don't want to use theirs).

Anyway, if you had planned on picketing your horse, you may have to make other arrangements.  Maybe if you've already made your campsite reservations they will grandfather you in under their old policy and let you picket your horse, but I'm sure anyone making reservations now will be required to get a stall.

Best to contact them at 1-800-97-TRAIL and make sure before you head up there.  That way if you have to get a stall, you can get one closest to where you are camped.

just talked to East Fork about this, as I have a number of rent-a-stall horror stories (NOT, REPEAT NOT, AT EAST FORK) that make me entirely paranoid- I always picket/corral at my campsite or I don't stay- and I was told they WILL honor reservations already made to picket. Also portable corrals will be permitted behind the campsites, just no more picketing after this...the decision to stop picketing was made because bored horses are damaging the trees around the campsites, and they want to have plenty of shade for folks.

So not to worry if you've already made reservations....I am relieved, because this would have been a deal breaker for me....

Peg

Thank you. We all know you have very pressing things to take care of right now. But thank you for doing this as well. There is still plenty of time to work it out.

Another EF note.  Brenda has given me the go ahead to contact EF stables regarding meals.  I'll do this next week after our power comes on (which doesn't seem quick at this point as there as still over 50,000 without power) and I'm not so inconvenienced and busy trying to cope without all of life's necessities.

I'll check on prices for a Saturday evening meal and get together at their pavilion, prices for having only dinners provided during the length of the ride (probably Saturday thru Wednesday), breakfast and dinner, and if some can opt out of meals.  I'll get their various options and prices and then go into a poll on who wants what and get back with all of you.

Well, I'll just watch this thread then and see what you need us to do.  Don't matter to me really, I'll bring my own grub or pay someone else - either way is alright by me.

Maybe the thing to do is for me to e-mail Brenda and ask her if she would like to consider this and volunteer to find out more about it.  Then we can do a poll or something to find out how many would like meals, some meals, breakfast/dinner for the duration or whatever the heck.  I need to find details from East Fork but only if Brenda gives the go ahead with this.

I think a Saturday night catered prime rib dinner sounds good with name tags.  We would be interested in meals too, but if you are talking $65 per person just for the week end I might have to re-consider.  We always have tons of food with us anyways, probably why we have so many blow outs!  But could you just go once or twice and pay as you go for meals except the cantered one?

TN, I can't do without sticky notes either, great invention!
