This is so good!

This morning she finished all of her breakfast. When everyone is done eating, I lead them out to their resp. fields. This morning we had a crew looking at the roof repairs, and while I'm leading Cinnamon out, who btw was practically dragging me at top speed flat walk, one of them said "Man, I'd like to take that one on a trailride!"

Life just doesn't get any better than this!

Don't know how y'all did it, but whatever it was, it seems to work.

Cinnamon was doing a little better yesterday, but that's how it's been all month...a good day...a really bad day...a bit better again...2 bad days...it's been driving me up the wall and then some.

But, throughout this month she hasn't had 2 good days in a row. And not only that: yesterday was good, today was a little better. She's now up to eating half of what she normally eats and acts like my alpha mare again - standing on her stripes.

I know that at her age, her time could come any day. And there have been a few times I thought her time had arrived. No matter how much I think I'm prepared for that time, when it comes down to it - I'm not.

I'm so very grateful for every good day she has left in her and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

It is so hard to watch them wither away before our eyes when it seems only yesterday they were strong and healthy.

Hugs, Nelliebly.

Thanks Whatta. It sounds like you can use a few hugs as well. Loving an animal is always good - even when it hurts.

Hugs back to you Whatta.

It's always sad to watch them get older. You always try to put them, in your mind, back when they were in their prime. They are the wise ones though and I'm sure the 'Queen" will let you know, in her own special way. A jingle, for the 'Queen', and a hug for you Nelliebly.

Thank you guys.

Cinnamon means the world to me; she's taught me everything I know about horses, as well as a lot about myself.

My vet is no help either...she keeps telling me that she looks too good for it to be her time. Sometimes I think she's even more stubborn than I am (if that's possible).

It's so hard to tell...in the morning she'll walk like she's about to fall over, a few hours later she'll be mounting one of the mares, and in the evening she'll come running to the barn. Not so much to eat, but to be with all the others.

It's so hard to know when it's time to say goodbye to animals that have given everything to us for so long... I feel sure that you know your 'Queen' best and will know when it's her time.  You obviously care for her so tenderly...have exhausted every avenue, and will have no reason for regrets later.  Bless you both!

Wow, I'm blown away by the heartache our members have endured this month. I'm sorry you have been added to the list. Prayers to you, Nellie and your precious Queen of The Barn.

My 'Queen of the Barn' is just not doing well. A month ago she basically quit eating her grain - she'll do that when she's in pain. She has had a lot to deal with as long as I've had the pleasure of being owned by her: Severe arthritis in a knee that had been neglected for years. 2 Years ago road founder caused by a butcher farrier, which took forever to resolve, during which time she had lost about 200 lbs. At her age (29 then) it wasn't easy to get the weight back on, but we did.

Since the founder episode the arthritis hasn't been bothering her - but now it is. My best guess is that while her right knee hurts, she strained her left leg. Swelling on the lower leg, fat fetlock, pastern practically horizontal when she's at rest. Fetlock gets better with coldhosing, poultices, etc., but when I quit it comes back.

She's lost about 75 lbs, eats some grain on and off, doesn't touch her beetpulp (which she loves!).

When this started, the vet gave her a steroid shot hoping it would help with her appetite (I should've known better). Now I have this beautiful, lame mare who is literally trying to mount my other mares when they're in heat. It could be funny if it wasn't so sad...

And all the while, I'm asking myself every morning: "Is this the day? Is this goodbye?" This old girl has too much heart for her own good.

So, I'm asking for the "power of all"...jingles for her OR for me to recognize the sign.
