Good info. I have written to people in my own state on such things. When our Govenor wanted the national identification for horses passed and each horse checked as it came through the gaits of our state parks he was barraged with letters. Needless to say it is still vollentary. Health papers I understand but the rest is bs. According to state law, people coming into Illinois, that want to camp with thier horse have to let 'the powers that be' know 2 weeks ahead of time, have health papers within 30 days of arrival. They have to state where they will be, for how long, and what stops they will make traveling through the state. Are there others that do the same?

No. I'm a big fan of getting the message across and signing petitions and things.  I've been behind many of them for various causes.  All I was saying is that from what I've read and discovered, very little attention is paid to e-mail petitions.  The right way to do it is to individually send a letter to your congressman and senator.  According to the Equestrian Land Conservation folks, they say that one letter doesn't do much, two letters makes them stand up and take notice, and three letters on the same subject is a signal that is how their constituents want them to vote.  If you barrage your congressman/senator with PERSONAL letters they will stand up and take notice.  I've been head of the state's horse council's trail committee and gotten our congrssman to co-sponsor the Right to Ride Act, and am on the board of the local Back Country Horsemen group and have seen how much clout letter-writing has.  But it needs to be personal, not an e-mail petition because e-mail petitions are largely ignored.  You can write the congressman/senator via e-mail and that counts as a personal letter.

Come on folks, let's get the ball rolling. Tn, I see you have little faith in the petition, but it's better than sitting on your hands doing nothing. If enough of these are signed and remarks written, someone eventually has to pay attention. Two years ago, some folks didn't think anything would happen at Celebration either, but it has. Last year was a farce too.  Maybe this year there will be some natural horses that will compete. Maybe in 2 years it will be all natural horses competing.

I've signed the petition, also, to do my small part.  It baffles me that this industry can continue harming these poor animals with impunity....

Thanks Brenda. I've sent this on to some friends that aren't members here. My hope is that this petion is sent around the country many times more than the 5000 signatures needed.tu1

I went ahead and sent in my name on the petition, but this will probably have little results.  I know that congressmen, etc., don't count e-mail petitions.

I received this a few days ago, and it is a worthy cause:

Brenda, as an advocate of naturally sound TWH, I would like to ask your assistance in gathering signatures for an online petition against soring. Our group, One Horse at a Time, is vehemently opposed to this ongoing abuse of this breed. As part of our overall strategy, we have an online petition at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/533003783. We also plan a letter writing campaign to public officials, both at the state and federal level, as well as a letter to the editor campaign.

The law prohibiting this abuse has been on the books for almost 40 years. It is past time for this law to be obeyed. FOSH has agreed to post the link on their website, and the Sound Horse Organization will be emailing our link to their members. We kindly request your consideration in doing both of these actions.

I am the owner of a lovely TWH gelding and live here in central Kentucky. THERE are NO shows where I could show him that don't have padded and sored horses. The KWHA, as you may know is not on board with the latest operating agreement.

This practice simply has to stop.

Again, I thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Penny Austin
Vice President/Treasurer
One Horse at a Time, Inc.
