If it were me....and my horse....  you put the muzzle on and she gets it off (I'd give her two tries as sometimes they can come off unintentionally) - but, if she keeps taking it off, put her back in that pen for awhile.  A few days will make her uncomfortable and remind her how badly she wants out.  Then take her out and see how the muzzle works.  She'll figure out her choices are one or the other....and solitary confinement wouldn't be their first choice. ;)  Worked on my boy...and only took one season in that pen to get thru to him.  He's a MUCH happier boy this summer - and so am I! :)  GOOD LUCK!

I think I am going to try it. The little heifer will probably figure a way to rid herself of it cause like you said they are smart. Now I am wondering if I ride in the arena, will she decide to duck under the rail to get out. That would not be pretty. Hope she does forget that little nifty tidbit she learned.

Joy....this may be the right time to attempt a grazing muzzle....since now she has experienced the alternative solution - and clearly didn't like it.  It completely worked with my pony - he hasn't even attempted to void himself of his muzzle......he knows the round pen is the alternative.....and I'll DO it!

Contrary to what some people think......horses are not 'that' stupid. ;)

Good Grief Joy. You have had alot going on. I sure hope things work out for you and your horse.  I know how hard this can be from first hand experience.

If you decide to sell your roundpen. Second hand roundpen's sell for 50.00 a panel. Hope that helps give you some idea as to what to price it for. I cannot remember what I paid for the gate.

Great story! LOL

1. YOu have very cheap board! :P

2. Maybe you should purchase the place and board horses.  s4

3. I would go with the grazing muzzle.

Keep the stories coming! They make my life a walk in the park.   l1

Week of twists and turns at the boarding barn this week! First all I had swapped my horse trailer (old fixer-upper) and round pen (a few panels bent some) for a year's pasture board. I did this around 3 months ago. I had a change of heart on the round pen and called and asked about how many months would be given for the trailer. Actually my rent is $75/mo. So the trailer is still a good swap. My BO told me to go ahead and use the round pen as it was not going anywhere. So got a call one of the boarders who just moved out wanted to buy the round pen. And the BO had told them to ask me about it. Of course this put me in an embarrassing position. But also during this I found out my BO is considering selling the place. It has not yet been listed and if and when it does, with the market like it is, could take a while but then again you never know.

My BO told me if it worked out that the place sold quickly, he was probably going to give me back the trailer and the pen. But then of course I would owe him the months' back rent. If you are confused, don't feel bad. We were all confused!! LOL. So the final take on this: I am keeping the round pen and if and when the place sells within a year, I am still going to let him have the trailer to sell or whatever. If we get new owners there is no guarantee they will board horses or even be horse people for that matter. When and if that time comes. I will weigh my options. My last option being my safety net. She can go to a family members farm in Shelbyville. But this time, no papers will go with her ;)

Shadow's weight loss program went to hades in a hand basket. I had her in the area surrounding the arena approx. 12 days. I went out yesterday. She had pooped everywhere. Where there was not poop, there was brown grass or dirt path she had made. I got to looking at the sand in the arena with sparse grass growing sand colic went through my mind. Got to looking where the boards were put around the arena to keep the sand from washing out were rotting. This was leaving big metal stobs sticking up. She has developed habit of going in the arena area and going under the single railing to get out. So I thought of her sticking a stob in her hoof. Then I got to looking at the dat blasted trees (what kind are they?) knowing full well how bored she was and not much to graze, she likes tree leaves anyway. She is looking over the fence at her old pasture and buddies with me trying to clean some of that poop up. It was 95 in the shade and there really is not much shade in that area. I went got her lead rope and halter and took her back. What fun watching how happy she was. Her man was so glad to see her! She galloped and galloped, neighing hello. The others settled down. Not Shadow, she got to gaiting around her man like an Indian. LOL. Like "look at me." So I hope I don't lose her to colic or founder. But my damn horse is happy and so am I.

Thanks for listening. (Stob is Southern word usually for wood but not in this case :))
