Yeah, whatta that makes since too. I was hoping this all wouldn't come back on my sister this whole time. This is a first for her, we're not horse breeders and the fact that this may have happened was a big surprise to us. I guess we should just be happy another unwanted horse didn't come into this scary world.

I completely understand wanting to know about the foal but I believe the good news is that the new owner is not asking for vet bills to be paid. I think I would just thank my lucky stars and be done with it. Some folks might want to turn their disappointment for not being able to ride this mare into a burden for you.

Well, we finally got some news. Were just not sure what to make of it though. My sister e-mailed the lady and asked how the horse was doing, she replied back saying that they lost the foal, long story short , the mares water broke, and nothing was happening, they loaded her up to take her to the vet and the vet did an ultrasound an confirmed that the foal was dead, so they took the foal. The vet asked if they wanted to know about the foal and they said no, that is was to heart breaking. They said the vet said it was probably the stress of moving and the change in weather. They said the mares doing great and they will be starting her on barrels soon, and that they would send pictures. It all just sounds weird though, why wouldn't you want to know about the foal? I would want to know what my horses foal looked like. We need to know, she came from us, and we have two mares that we don't want pregnant. I mean if that little baby was a mule we need to find out where that donkey is that we here in the distance sometimes. Or if I should get my Paso tested. What do you all think of this story? My sister e-mailed her back and asked if she could have the # to their vet, so she could talk to him and find out about the foal. I kind of think maybe there never was a foal. we'll see if she sends us the vets number.

Hey everyone Well, no word yet. I wish this woman would give us an update, kind of makes me wonder if the mare was really in foal or not. Kind of hard to really know when we're states away, I just hope the horse is in good hands and nothing is wrong with her.

Melissa, I missed the part about the sale being just two months ago. So much for my detective skills! Keep us all posted and ask for pictures!

And if you sold the mare only 2 months ago and she is ready to drop, I guess that would eliminate any in transport accidental breeding. Hmm, the plot thickens! t2 Edited to show thinking not sarcastic. Last edited on Wed Jul 9th, 2008 01:10 pm by JoyRider ____________________ Revelation 19:11 |

Well, I've only had my Paso for around 3 years now, his papers say he was gelded in 1991, as a 2yo. the halflinger was a gelding when she got him too, but she's going to ask his last owners about him. The other thing is we just don't see how she could have been around a stallion, we really don't leave home that much with them and when we do, their never just left unattended. My sister did say she hears a donkey calling sometimes, don't know where it's coming from but hey who knows maybe this baby will be a mule. I guess we just need to see pics of this baby when it comes, then go from there. I looked at a color chart today, and basically if it's the Halflinger's foal it can only be palomino or chestnut. If it's black/smokey black/chestnut/buckskin/bay/ it could be my Boy's but he can also throw palomino and chestnut too.-|-

Thoretically, the sperm would not survive the increased heat if one testicle were still remaining inside the body, but it still seems the most likely scenerio. Another thought though...was the mare transported by a third party that could have allowed her to come into contact with a stud sometime in route?

Shannon, I wondered about that too. We had a real lengthy thread back some time ago on that very subject. What I couldn't remember was in that case if they still could reproduce or if it was a case of possible but not likely. But I wondered if they were already gelded when she got them.

Did you have both of the "geldings" before they were gelded? If not, it is a strong possibility that one of your boys may be a cryptorchid - had one undescended testicle. Whoever gelded him would have obviously known but may not have passed that along to subsequent owners. A vet can tell before they geld a horse if they have both dropped, and likley would not remove just one testicle. The proceedure to geld a cryptorchid is a much more involved proceedure - read expensive. There are also some folks out there who do thier own gelding that may not know any better - thinking they only had one. You would like to think that information would have been passed on, but it is likely the cause of the new arrival. In anycase, it sounds like you need to have the testosterone level checked on your boys to know for sure.

Oh this is an exciting thing to have happen. Makes us all very curious? It will be interesting to find out if your Paso is the sire. Do keep us updated. ;)

Well, my Paso is dark bay black, both his parents were bay and through their lines they have a few roans and a greys and some brown, in there as far as I could trace back. The mare is a solid palomino paint, I don't know about her parents though.

How exciting and great the new owner is happy. Color experts will know this I am sure. But maybe the color will help narrow down sire????

I have heard that they can reproduce if recently gelded. But I not if they have been gelded for year or more. But sometimes the Good Lord has other ideas. Can't wait to see pictures. Saying a prayer everything goes well for them.

Yes the lady will be sending pictures, thank goodness she's not mad, she's vary exited about the baby. I just know if it looks like my boy OsoSuave I'll want it. Has anyone gone through this before??????? What are the odds of a gelded horse reproducing? I can't seem to find any answers on line. The halflinger could care less about the mares, but Oso on the other hand likes them a lot.
