It's always an interesting journey when you buy a horse that is already trained and you don't get much info from former owners. Direst reining was called plow reining when I was a kid and it was a big no no for a saddle horse. I use romel reins on all my horse and really love them.

That's great to hear.  I am hoping Luke loves his new bit, too.  I have only had him a month now and we are both still learning about each other.

My horse neck reins and evidently was ridden that way most her life. She will direct rein but I get much better response on turning laying that rein on the neck. Sometimes I still ride two handed and then just lay that rein when I want a smooth turn. I guess after 17 years being rode to neck rein this is what works for her. I have the Imus also and she has done very, very well in that bit.

I have been riding Luke my new MFT with wide leather split reins and holding them two-handed, like all the videos show.  It was not working out well, he was becoming uncomfortably bumpy and very trotty.  Luke is trained for neck-reining, so I bought a pair of romel reins (I ride western) and wow, what a difference!  Luke was so much more comfortable.  With the new reins he was gaiting up a storm.  I guess I will have to use one hand if I want to be able to say "chunk of meat and two potatos" while I ride :D.

I could also tell the bit is not right for him.  I ordered the GOG bit and cannot wait for it to get here!  Luke is going to be so happy!  I read all the good reviews on this bit and just had to get one for my boy.

What a difference changing a little piece of gear can make!
