sheilazav - Thank you so very much for your kind words.  I do have more videos of my mare but my trainer is riding her and want to get her permission to "share" them before I post them.

Liteshod,

WOW!  She looks great!!  What a pretty mare!  She has a wonderful build!!

Chris,

The picture of you really helped my visual concerning hands.  I think mine might have been a little too high.

Icehouse,

I will certainly use the advice you gave concerning hand placement.  That should help!  Thanks!

Any more videos, Liteshod?  I'm learning a lot!

whoever said lower your hands is right on.  Loose reigning a gaited horse is not the way to go.

Try setting your hands somewhere on the saddle and just using your fingers once the horse has calmed down.    This way you know you are not bumping the bit inadvertently.

Thank you Chris.  I never consider constructive comments as "brutal".  My trainer did work her on a very loose rein, hands low, at a walk.  I, obviously, had my hands way too high and upon watching the video again I definitely see my error.  Thank you for taking the time to review the video and providing me with good advice.

Thanks for your input, Chris. I have never heard the term "swan frame", but I see it quite a bit here in No. Ga, also. The horses are always fretting the bit, and moving out in an unhappy, distracted frame of body & mind.

  Beautiful horse, I must remark!

ill try not to be brutal but i spend alot of time untraining horses going in this frame . I call it the swan set it is how they ride them here in mississippi. He is giving false collection and hollowed backed . You need to get your hands down at pommel height and give him his head and get him going a relaxed walk . then he slowly bring him back up on the bit again so he will start using hes rear and rounding up over his top line . the bit u are using is wonderful and with a  little time and relaxed work  you and he will be much happier
  chris:)

as a matter of face here is a picture of my newest project a 3 yo walkaloosa this was my first ride on him when i went to pick him up ill have crystal shoot some video of me today to show u what im doing with him

I usually don't ride with my hands that high but was trying to mimic my trainer so as not to confuse her.  April would do well with a bit for a day or two and then start with the head thing.  The trainer would try a different bit, all would be well, and "bam" there she goes again.  I had the vet do her teeth prior to going to the trainer and they were checked again once she was there.  She was trained to have little to no contact in her mouth.  It only takes a slight touch for a whoa, back-up, etc.  I am going to order the Imus training bit and see if that will make a difference.

I haven't ridden April for quite awhile.  There have been things happening (parents illness, work, etc) that have taken me away from working her.  Now that the weather is improving I am going to start ground drivng her.  I am also wondering if the saddle that was being used at the trainers was bothering her?  When I brought her home I started using a cutback saddle and it was a little bit better.  I will have my vet thoroughly check her before I begin again.

Wow! She's great! I thought I noticed that when you lowered your hands just the slightest she seemed more content. Have you noticed if she changes much as you raise or lower your hands?
