There is a non-gaited clinic at the Birch Run Expo that might be a good time to meet and greet.  i don't know how much I can say on this line as of course the person is not gaited, but the topic may apply.

The clinic runs Feb 25 - 27. Google "Birch Run MI Horse Expo February"and that will get details.

Anyone else up for a get together??

How far is Birch run from Adrian?  I live 45 minutes west of Adrian.  Might be a bit far for me.  Andrea

Adrian is about 3 1/2 hours to Birch Run.  If plans fall together we could figure out some sort of car pooling.

What day are you all interested in going and meeting?

Friday at 7 is Developing Control from the Saddle - that sounds interesting to me.  Then a nice late dinner somewhere yummy.

Sat @ 11 is how to Relax and Slow your Horse

Sat @ 3 is how to cross scarey objects

Sunday is Control made easy at 11

and 2 is Speed and direction control

Meeting in Flint somewhere would work out nicely for some of us.  :) If you are coming from Hillsdale it will be a bit of a hike - but still fun.  Besides, in February how much riding can you get in unless it's during the February thaw??

What topic interests the rest of you?

Pat - sounds great!  I like the idea of going Friday.  Are you familiar with the area?  Know of any good food places there??

Anyone else able to attend on Friday?

There are also a few events coming up at the MSU Pavilion:

Jan 14-16 Seminar and Workshops put on by MSU Horseman's Asso, $ 15.00:  Fri 1/14 from 5 - 10, Sat 1/15, Sun 1/16 8am to 10 pm

A 4-H Horse Benefit Clinic Jan 29 from 1 - 3 pm $ 8.00 advance or $ 10 at the door

Feb 12, Lippizan Stallions 2 pm and 7 pm

I think the Pavilion would be the perfect place for Brenda to hold a clinic.  Dunno if we could come up with the $$ to rent the arena and pavilion for a weekend.  Hmm, maybe if it was sponsered by some MSU vet or something....

Hi DQ!  No, I'm not familiar with the area.  But, no worries here (!).....I'm not fussy about food.  Any place is a good place when we're able to enjoy our horse passion and good company!

GREAT IDEA regarding Brenda having a clinic at MSU.  I have attended some horse functions at the MSU pavillion.   It's HUGE!  I know there is something happening in March (can't remember at the moment) that I want to go to.

Have you ridden any lately?

I'm not fussy about food either.  LOVE new tastes and finding new places to eat.  :D

I picked up a Birch Run Brochure this weekend and will find some time to look it over this week and maybe post a MapQuest map address or something for us all.

Does anyone know who to contact to determine if there is a mutual date that BI is available and MSU Pavilion is as well???  It IS a nice facility!  Hopefully not to pricy though.

We got a nice ride in Thursday 12/29 at the Lakelands trail out of Stockbridge - we rode through Gregory to Pinckney Rec area and explored that then back to the trailers in Stockbridge - about 5 hours of riding.  GREAT weather - the January Thaw has been nice this year!   The footing (crushed limestone) was fine for our barefoot horses, and drained nicely as the thaw revved up that day.  Pinckney was a bit mucky in spots and sandy in others.

Then I got in a couple shorter rides around home - I needed to do pasture patrol - funny how when the snow diappears my pasture looks like I have 20 horses not 2.  The piles were everywhere!  Snow hides them so easily.

Hi DQ and other Michiganers (?),

I know we have a pretty good fan base in Michigan, but I am not sure if we have any dates open for 2005 to come this year.

You can email our clinic coordinator, Sue Leonard, for details : sue@gaitsofgold.com.

She'll be able to let you know if it's possible, or at least maybe try for next year.

In the meantime, have fun at the Birch Run Expo.  I wish we could get away to meet up too.

Let us know how it goes.  We're enjoying following the plan-making.

So we need to look at dates in 2006?  Can you toss some dates around or should I just email Sue??  What are your list of needs in a clinic hosting situation (size arena, microphone, stalls, how many horse/rider teams can you take on, weekend Fri., Sat., Sunday clinic, or Sat./Sun. clinic).  Curious, so if I can find a person @ MSU to talk to about it i can give some concrete details.

Thanks

Hi DQ,

I used to handle the clinic scheduling and info, but "handed over the reins" to sue chkl so I don't have the recent info readily available.

You will have to contact Sue for that.

As for the dates, they are firming up the 2005 schedule so I don't know if they do or don't have anything available, but Sue can help you.

Hi DQ,  I see you are running for a board position on the MI trail riders.  You go girl!  Just knowing you in the short time I have and reading your post on the MTRA website I think you would be awesome for the position!

Birch Run happenings on Sunday look great as well.  Are you up for both days?

Can't believe how much riding you do!

Talk soon.   Hubby is waiting for me to get on the road.  Errands to run!!!

Well gosh thanks!  :D *blush blush*

Yes, I am running for MTRA board member - I hope that I can help our organization by assisting with work bees and all the paperwork and permitting we are now required to do, and with our relationship with the MDNR (MI Dept of Natural Resources).  There is a lot of the same types of permitting and paperwork going on in my job at MI Dept of Transportation (MDOT), so I hope that will ease things for us.

I can't do both days at the Birch Run Expo - I have a college review class scheduled for Saturdays from January 29 through the end of March (waaaa all those Saturdays lost) to review for an exam I need to pass to earn a PE licence (Civil Engineering.  I returned to school as an adult student when I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up, at the age of 30.)

So Friday is good, and Sunday is good - but not both, darn it.  After I pass the exam (YIKES!  I hope I hope) I'll be free again.  Wish me luck - its April 15, must be some kinda joke.

I do like to get in a few miles riding!  Riding is my relaxation - or vice!  I love to go and explore.  Luckily I've gotten into work and recreational organizations that allow me time and $$ to ride.  And of course there is also David aka "Milkman" that supports me whole heartedly.  What a guy.  (He is in the middle of repairing our gooseneck refridge unit today.  Replacement of fridge:  $ 900.00, replacement of cooling unit: $ 400.00.)

We'll meet for a ride soon.  ;)

DQ - Who are the MI Gold Gaiters?

Whoa girl, you've been busy!  Civil Engineering!!!!  You have my BEST wishes for your exam in April.  You'll do great.  You've gotten this far!  What a blessing to have found the career of your dreams.

Friday works for me then!  Anybody else going?

I haven't had Dom out in so long. We'll have lots of work come Spring.  But I'm still game to head out before then.

Did "your Milkman" :)get the fridge fixed?  Bummer the cost of repair was so high.  Had you taken it in to be fixed can you imagine what the fee would or could have been?

Gosh DQ, remind me the next time I need something done to call upon you.  YOU get things rollin' in a hurry.  Hope Brenda's schedule will allow her the time to head to our neck of the woods.  I did see her in Novi but State will be a blast.

MI Gold Gaiters?  Oh I just tossed that out there - we ought to have a name, huh??

Busy is best IMO.  The best part of having a dream is making it come true.  :)  Thanks for the well-wishes.  If I study I should do fine.  Gotta put in the time to make those dreams come true.;)

I hope others can make it on Friday.  I hope the weather behaves for us - I don't care for driving in blowing snow like today.

I'm sure you'll have *lots* of opportunities to get Dom out before spring.  I can't wait for spring!!

Dave's waiting on one more part for the fridge, to arrive in the mail soon, we hope.  In the mean time we decided on paint, wallpaper, oak trim adn wood flooring for the living room/dining room and he's getting a start on that (keeps him busy while I study).  He's a retired iron worker (retired at age 47 - lucky fella - 30 yrs and out!).  Yes, thank goodness he's so handy - repairing the fridge, putting the ball in the truck bed, house repairs, house fixer-upper.  A real keeper.

*blush* No need to call me to get things done...just schedule your priorities (S.O., horses, study time) then figure when you can fit in your job, THEN don't sweat the small stuff.

I hope Brenda can do an MSU clinic too.  I enjoyed Novi, but misunderstood the clinic.  I thought each session would be the same and did not realize they were to be progressive.  oops.   Would LOVE to learn more.

DQ: Replacement of such a great supportive hubby: PRICELESS! (I've got one of those wonderful creatures, too 1l)

Brenda

PS: Will talk to Sue about Michigan. Logistics are very demanding, but we have a terrific bunch of fans out your way. Promise to do our best.

DQ,  Of course we ought to have a name.  Got any more ideas anyone?

I'd say Dave is lucky to be retired at age 47!  My hubby is 58 and preparing to retire in April.  He doesn't relish repairs and doesn't enjoy painting and we don't do wallpaper (been there, done that - and find we don't like each other as much when we try to wallpaper together:D)but he's a hard worker and a keeper (20+years!).  I've put my time in earning a degree years ago in education, left my profession to raise four kids, and now I'm ready to retire right along side my husband!  We still have two left in college but they are independent and have pretty much flown the coop.   The two oldest are settled and established.    How come nobody mentioned "don't sweat the small stuff" years ago!!!!  My kids would have appreciated that!  Ah!....It's easier to apply with age!:D   Actually, I have a notepad on my desk that has that saying on it.  :)

Sounds like Brenda is going to make every effort to visit Michigan again.  What I particularly enjoy is the no-nonsense, common sense approach that Brenda departs empowering those less skilled (:? me) to believe they can with time and patience "develop" a rewarding relationship with their equine friend.

Hey Michigan riders!  How many are planning to meet at Birch Run?
