Just checked out your site, lovely horses and family. Just Sunday someone mentioned an indian fokelore regarding horses with a blue right eye. I know it had something to do with being very special but, can't recall exactly. Noticed that Macho has a blue right eye and now wish I'd paid more attention.

The bit seems to tilt forward in his mouth when the top ring is attached to the headstall (yes that is it at top), and he seems more comfortable when I hook my fingers through the snaffle rings and support it there. I have tightened and loosened the headstall to find just the right spot without luck. We are in no rush and will likely "play" with wearing a bit for a while. He is SOOOOO laid back that he takes it all in stride, and is very patient with ME. Though I have had many horses, this is my first horse to start myself so we are taking our time and doing it right. I'm not exactly sure what you are asking or in what direction you are pulling the bit. The picture looks correct to me if that is the headstall on top and the rein to the side. According to the diagrams here, the headstall will always be on the top ring, not the snaffle ring. Your horse may want to have the bit placed higher (or lower) in his mouth. That could be done by adjusting the headstall. Mouthing the bit is not necessarily a bad thing. I think I would be inclined to give him some adjustment time before making too many changes. And thanks for going slow with this young horse so he doesn't have to make any negative associations. Well done. tu1

Thanks for your reply. I had his wolf teeth checked last week and they are not really close to coming in yet. I just thought it odd that he seemed so comfortable when I supported the bit at the snaffle ring. He hasn't even had it on for a full 2 minutes yet so I will just give him some time to get used to it. Thanks

My advice would be to just give it time. It is not unusual (actually common) for a horse to play with the bit when first introduced. It takes them time to get use to it and to accept it. Some will leave the bit in the horse mouth awhile, may even feed them with it on to help them get accustomed to it. Of course always be close by and keep and eye on the horse at that time. And of course some horses will just naturally play with a bit more than others. Anyway give it some more time and see what happens. Also do not forget to check for any teeth problems, such as wolf teeth, ect. that could also cause an issue with a bit. Hope this helps.

Though this is an older post, I am hoping it is still a good place to post my question. Background: I have a 2 1/2 yr TWH, Macho, I am trying to get used to the bit. Please do not worry, I will not be doing any real riding for MANY months. At this point I have been saddling him and walking around the ring in a rope halter for about five minutes a couple of times a week, but now I would like to introduce the bit. Both of my other horses are in the regular Imus bit and do great! I tried the ICTB on Macho (without riding) yesterday and today. He had never had a bit in his mouth before and with the headstall on the top ring and reins in the snaffle position, per the instructions, he constantly "plays" with the bit. I even tried to hold the reins in a position similar to where they would be if I were in the saddle, but not differnce. When I pull on the snaffle ring to simulate the heastall being attached there, he immediately stops. Should I just attach the headstall and reins to the large "snaffle" ring or have him just get used to it? I have attached a photo of my current set-up. Attachment: 100_1140.jpg (Downloaded 133 times)

I finally got it!!  I want thank everyone for the direction, especially the pics from Hurleycane. When I was looking at the pics I noticed how the bit was sitting in the horses mouth, so I dropped Dixie's headstall by one hole on each side, and boom, perfect fit. Thanks again. Wini.

It looks to me like you have attached it to where in whattarack's diagram says headstall instead of where it says attach curb chain. I think if you just move it down to that side of the same area, it should work. Also, when I removed the trigger snaps on my reins and just attached with the leathers/chicago screws, my horse was more responsive to me. Seems all that clinking annoyed him in the bit.

That does look tight. Check out the pics again on page one of this topic. I notice that the buckle of your curb chain makes it hard to tell how it is attached. You'll see the difference when you compare pics. Also, if it is still tight, is a longer curb strap an option? I'm not sure if they only come in one size or not. If you can post your pics in a larger format, it would be easier to view them. You should be able to post anything under approx. 5 x 7 without any problems.

The picture is small, but does not look like curb chain is attached correctly. Look at Hurleycanes picture again and attach like hers. Also, yes I believe it is tight the way it is now.
