I've had people tell me that before as well.  I guess it depends on whether you are buying or selling, LOL.

Lezli   I never even thought about the differences in shoeing or hoof size as adding to the height , could make a lot of difference.    I was just interested in how high off the ground there back was for mountings sake.

Gare thats the stick she had except it was for big horses, I just thought it was a neat measure stick.

Rockin I might have some Guiness  Book contenders around here if I was measuring the way I said I was going to do it.  LOL

I can see why they may have only measured to the coronary band.  When I bought my TWH, he was 15 hands.  When I had a barefoot trim, well he's visible shorter.  Obviously you can add an inch or two by the way the horse is shod.

Even though I am big boned and a little fluffy, I have always prefered horses at 15 hands or a little less.  I like that lower center of gravity.

I am so glad to see I am not the only one who can't use the soft measuring tapes.  I had mine measured all wrong.  Lindsay helped me (again) when she came out.  I would also like one of the aluminum ones...cool.

Here are a couple I know I've seen wooden ones cheaper though and yes you do measure all the way to the ground.

well I tried to link to a couple of them from http://www.valleyvet.com  but the links ended up witha1 in them.

Duh thats what I meant divide,  as you can tell my weak point is math !!

I have been taking a level and putting it on the withers and running a tape to the ground.  My brother in law said  "in the old days" which is what he always says they measured to the coranary band,  I said why, they dont walk on there coranary so whay would you stop there.

I went to look at as horse and thay had a measure stick that I'd love to have it was a level  that slid up a yard stick with the measurments on it, but they did not remember were there daughter got it, any one seen one ?

That'll be a tall horse, LOL, as Gare said, you need to divide.

Spotd Ridr Alforddm is correct. Use a level at the withers keep it level then measure straight down to level ground or concrete pad . Then divide by 4

hope this helps

PS then after you get that measurement measure it the other way and see how much taller they gain lol

let us know

I don't know.  My dad has one of those taps and I've tried to use it a couple of times without success.  It always bends around to much for me.  I just take a level put it on the top of the withers make sure the bubble is level and then use a regular measuring tape like they use in carpentry.  They are stiff enough if your talented and your horse stands still you can do it yourselfl1.  I keep meaning to buy one of those measuring sticks just haven't ever gotten around to it.  Just remeber to measure from the ground straight up and don't bend the tape for the curve up to the wither.

I bought one of those weight/height measure tapes and promptly lost it, so bought another one.

Tried it last night and it says my mare and hubby gelding are 15.2 and Cruz measures at 15.1h so now I'm not sure what Cruz is , but when you take and use a tape measure from the ground to the top of the wither they measure 65 inches and isn't a hand 4 " so would that not make our horses 16.2h , which is what we have always thought they were.  Going to tape measure Cruz tonight and multiply by 4 and see what he comes up.

Any suggestions,  are you suppose to read the tape at a certain starting point ?
