Isn't everyone here great!!?  I sure needed a laugh and they never disappoint!  I've been inspired to appreciate what I have a little more and try my hardest to see the "silver lining" here.  It's a work in progress, I'm trying!!  I'm keeping those tarps next time though!!

Whattarack and Glenn

You two are so funny!    I laughed so hard.   Your phrases cracked me up!   (up the old address) , ( bail for two)  he he       Though your tips are really not valid especially with some of the "Crazies" out there, I did have to chuckle.l1      You made Rackn laugh and I'm sure she needed that.    I could just see someone going to a neighbors house and wacking them with a big Salami! ha ha ha ha ha ha.     When we get a big wind gust here our neighbors crushed pop can recyclables comes flying over in our yard , we just pick them up and toss them back over the fence.   They pick them up eventually and put them back in their bin till the next wind tunnel.    They are good neighbors all and all.

I did like the idea someone had about building a high fence and when the tarp comes flying over , it's kept!  Eventually the neighbors would get the idea that they are loosing their tarps and replacement is time and money.  They would figure out it is best to tie them down and tie them down good!

You folks on this web site are great by the way!

Crissy

Hey I don't blame ya!  I'd hate having neighbors who keep me up while breaking the law.  A few years back we had neighbors living behind us who would put forth a New Years Eve party that compared to Disney World.  Which was really stupid considering all the dry pasture around  (severe drought for several years).  Nobody complained  and put up with the seasonal noise despite the fact that fireworks were against the law.  I put my spook-o-matic in the barn out of sight of the bright explosions and I would stay with him.  One year I was treating  colicking horse, and injecting banamine IV while fireworks blasted away.

Not so surprising one year a fire started and the dry pasture burned as if soaked in gas.  The fire swept toward another home and a small child died while trying to escape.  An emotional fire exploded and lawyers got involved.  People were sent to jail.   Many lives were destroyed.  Rather sad.

To this day I wonder if somebody complained and stopped these folks if that small child's life would have been saved.

Ya know, this might work!!  ROFLOL!!! Payback is the best revenge, huh??  s4  The fireworks thing really wasn't that bad.  And I've got a 16.2 hand horse sitting here that's been used to living in a show barn his whole life.  Good thing he's got a nice temperment.  I've gotten a lot better, my best guy friend was here with his wife and we sat out and just watched over the horses.  Ok, that wasn't so bad, there ya go.. uh huh.. nice!  I'm getting better...  It's just put all the things together and ya get tired of it.  I mean, come on!

Hey the fireworks thing???  My kids have bottle rocket wars where they throw lit bottle rockets at each other.  They'll light the BAM-BAM-BAM firecrackers too... just for fun.

Guess where they usually have it?

In my pasture!

We have a neighbor (all kinfolks) who sites in their gun across the road... Derek and Carl will site-in in the yard.

We have bottle rockets set of at various times all year long.

Gina and Wing were in the yard pen when some were set off in the yard... Gina almost sat down where she was - she wanted to go somewhere SO badly... just coudln't figure out where to go!

They were munching hay quite happily (all four horses and all five cows) about 20 yards from where we set off roman candles, and 12 of some sort of Go Up In The Sky and Explode Into A Million Colors w/a Huge WHOOSH Out of the Container and a LOUD BANG In The Air Thingies.

It's an expected thing around here and no one asks permission.  But it's been done for so many years that new horses kinda learn to chill out from the older Been THere Heard That ones.

IF I were to bring in a Brand New To Fireworks herd... I would have to do some desensitizing 'cause those fireworks are GONNA happen.

And that's the way it is... in my neck of the woods.  sylvia

We all have to deal with bad neighbors from time to time.  The best remedy I have found is fencing.  It creates a barrier to prevent their "stuff" from getting in your yard.  And if it does make it over to your yard, then it is now yours - like those tarps.  They aren't cheap and they will get tired of having to replace them.  As far as their dog, I agree with the response to call animal control or take it to the pound.  That gets expensive also.  Make it cost them something.

I have had to call the sheriff the past two years on some of our neighbors that like to shoot their fireworks off over our nice, clear, open pasture.  Florida has real strict fireworks laws and the ones they were firing off are illegal here.  In Fla, we have laws that allow us to take measures to protect our livestock.  I recommend you check your state and local statutes for your rights in this regard as a property owner.  There are also laws against harassment and stalking so documentation is good, pictures to support the documentation are good also.

You could also learn to play polka on an electric accordian and hook it up to a big speaker system pointed in their direction  l1.

Thanks, Sage.  Yes, everyone else here is so nice and normal.  I've made friends with a lady 2 doors down that moved from the same place that I moved from.  I was so impressed, at Christmas time we had 2 neighbors leave Christmas goodies at our door.  Just some really nice people.  Too bad these people couldn't just try a little harder to be mindful of others.  I haven't gone back to work yet, and I don't know what I would do if I had to leave them all here without someone home.  I often think there has to be a reason I ended up in a place that has so many challenges so far.  I'm sure there is one, I'll keep working on my patience for now.  And taking notes and pics, LOL!!

That is so true. I too have had a few incidents since i bought this place in '89. Most of the people around me own also so we are stuck with each other ! Although i do feel blessed that i care for just about all of my neighbors and get invited to graduations, bday parties, etc., there have been a few instances during the yrs ive been here. Mostly have to do with dogs running loose and chasing and/or killing my chickens or overzealous use of fireworks during the 3 week 4th of July "season". So i checked out the law first then talked to the people. Like "I love my dogs and my chickens and i know you and your children love your dog. But it is against the law for a dog to harass and kill livestock and if i call animal control your dog will be picked up and put to sleep. I dont want to do this and i know you dont want me to so PLEASE keep your dog under control". They apologized up and down and thanked me for not calling animal control and started keeping their dog home.

In the other instance, a family that has like 1/4 acre and lives almost next to my five sent their daughter over to tell me they were having a 4th of July party and out of state guests and they wanted to warn me. I walked over and told them i dont care what you do on your property, but can you keep that stuff from landing in my pasture for my horses to step on ? I didnt want to ruin their party even though the stuff they lit off was illegal. I put my horses in the barn and turned the radio up loud and the neighbors lit the sky up. The next day he and his daughter walked the pasture picking up and even got a ladder and got stuff off of my roof. That was several yrs ago and they havent done it since. But another new person that moved in did the big fireworks thing. My next door neighbor told me she was almost trampled by her horses while she was trying to catch them and get them into the barn. I asked her if she told the new people. She said no - i dont want to start anything. I said Well I will ! I went over the next day and pounded on their door and started yelling Do you realize you almost got someone hurt ? You have no right to be using that sort of fireworks in the first place ! Let alone that the horses might have been injured, you almost got thier owner injured. Do you REALLY want that sort of liability ? They havent done the stupid fireworks since. There are so many places around here that put on beautiful fireworks displays - i just think its really rude of people to do them at home when their neighbors have horses.

But i was dealing with reasonable people ! I feel so bad for you in your stiuation. Even though you are Right and they are Wrong, if they dont have the class to be a good neighbor, its a very delicate situation. Im retired now and home all the time, but i did used to worry about the horses when i went to work. I will be thinking of you and hoping you get a good resolution to this. There is  one thing i would do. If they treat their stuff like trash, i would treat their stuff like trash and throw it out, not return it. Maybe evenutally all their crap can end up in the trash bin if the winds blow long enough. I feel sorry for these peoples kids and their dog.

Hey Red, the house is sitting on maybe an acre, but that's including the house and my useless, huge front yard.  Thought about making the front another turnout, lol!   The back is chainlink, but I won't put my horses in chainlink, so I surrounded the chainlink with pipe corral.  Just finished cleaning out a stall full of trash, better get my camera, good idea!  The wind stopped finally, cleaned everyones eyes out with clear eyes, they looked really red and irritated.  Anywho, yes, I'll take some pics and start writing this stuff down.  Thank you!!

If it ain't one thing it's another huh? Who knew this place is a wind tunnel as soon as the heat leaves!  l1  Oh boy!  We have strict regulations about the heighth of the fence.  We can do chain link, what I have now, or brick.  But the wall being brick isn't going to hold in canopies, tarps, and trash.  They did have a problem with the other neighbors next door to them.  Seems the kids paintballed all the trash cans on the street.  And ya hit the nail on the head, Deb.  Who wants to live next to ignorant, mindless people that are angry at you?!  I'll start documenting things like you suggested Tessie and that way when I do complain, I'll surely have a list of details!!  Thanks everyone for all your suggestions and letting me gripe!

I could sure use those giant tarps!

I feel for ya, rackn. I have never really had any "bad" neighbors (well, except for my drug-dealing sister & all the garbage that goes along w/ that...), so I don't know what I'd do.

I am guessing that your stalls are open to the outside w/ an overhang? So there'd be no way to screen it off like you could if it was the doorway into an enclosed barn...

I am sure that if you didn't have your beloved horses to caretake, this stuff wouldn't bother you as much. I am hoping you can find a workable solution though.

Sounds like this family is just a bit "ignorant" about living peacefully in a civilized world, making them selfish to their own needs, without regard to the needs of others. Pretty sad, since they are raising children who will probably be the same way...

Last thing I would want is to have folks like that, living adjoining my property, angry w/ me!!! No doubt they may retaliate...

Fencing may be a pretty benign way to go? You wouldn't have to see them anymore, may help w/ the blowing trash issues & even help serve as a noise barrier. BUT - the fence may just get blown done in those winds? It may not be able to be a solid fence & boy, would it have to be anchored in well. (I don't know how ya do it in winds like that...)

Good luck! I hope the owner of your house is cooperative!

If you really want to do something about these folks document all these complaints with videos and photos.  Document date and time.  Most areas do have ordinances against these things especially loud noises, and getting proof will help your case.  Getting cops to respond to these types of complaints can be a pain but if you irritate them as much as your neighbors irritate you, you should get some action.  Be prepared to go to court and provide all your documentation.  Talk with your other neighbors and see what they think.  Chances are they are in the same boat as you and are afraid to take action.  Usually all it takes is one person to start complaining and the rest will follow.

Bad neighbors are a pain and a lot of work.  With persistance you'll get the job done!

If the owner of your horse doesn't mind you building a solid fence behind your horses I don't think the neighbors can stop you as long as it is on your side.  Just put it against the exsisting fence.  I wouldn't think the property owner would mind because it sounds like blocking the trash next door would be a benefit to his property that you rent.  You might be able to deduct at least part of the fence cost from the rent depending on the agreement etc.  It wouldn't hurt to ask.  I would definitely start keeping hteir stuff and making them come ask for it.  Maybe tell them the horses destroyed the tarp or whatever and you have warned them before about stuff ending up in your yard.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT hand-walk their dog back to them.  Call the Animal Control people and have it picked up.  I'm sure there's some sort of leash law regarding the control of the dog.  Then, they'd have to pay bail for the dog.  That'd be one less hassle for you.

I'm feeling for you, rackn; the wind here makes me crazy too, and everything little thing bothers me when the winds ablowing.  That's why I love (I repeat) LOVE my little underground house - I can't hear the wind when it blows.

You guys are too funny!!  As frustrated as I was when I posted this, I'm cracking up now!!!  Next time another piece of trash blows over, I'll be thinking of WR wrapping them up in a tarp, Lady kicking the patoodies outa them and G swinging a huge salami at em!!  tu1  Works for me!!

Yes, our rules do require both parties paying for the fence.  In fact they are on their 3rd dog since I've been here.  Somehow, they all DIE!  The newest dog has figured out how to get in with my horses and I've hand walked him over to their front door oh so many times telling them my horses are NOT dog friendly.  Fancy would have at it, if in the mood.  They told me the last people that lived here, their horses killed one of their dogs... NOT funny, but all true.  Nope, they are not fixing anything.

Wonder where I would find such a salami.. All jokes aside, I'm calling the owner.  If one of my ponies got hurt, bail will definately be needed.
