Welcome to the board, and to the life of being a horsie mom....LOL Ask all the questions you want, and when you get your horse up here and need help just holler! Good luck with him.

Hi there....I am a new horse owner, too, in the Kansas City area.  I have a two year old TWH that is in Springfield.  My hubby and I are in the process of buying the land behind our home so we can bring him up.  We have been making regular "Springfield Visits" every chance that we get.  So far,  our horse is greenbroke, so I am probably not a good trail riding buddy, yet.

I just thought that I would like to introduce myself.

Our horse is so gentle and has a "I want to please" attitude, so I don't think he'll stay green too long.  I have two girls, 8 and 14, and both of them have ridden him. (with close supervision! );)  My husband is knows horses, but not me!   Years ago I spent every waking momet riding at our local stables.  It's fuuny, but I never, ever saddled a horse, groomed a horse,  or even lead a horse.  So the trainging part is all new to me.  So far I have read every book in the three-state area, but have very little hands-on experience.  I am learning...fortunately, our horse is kind and very forgiving, but he still has fun testing me.

Keep me in mind.

Shebee

Did I say Valley View Farm? I meant to "Hidden Valley Farm."

Everyone in the KC area seems to know the place. I have heard it was a remarkable training stable in its day. It's for sale now, and hopefully whomever buys it will keep it as a stable, not tear it down to make yet another unsightly apartment building or shopping mall.

They have been running a therapeutic riding program out there for quite a few years; very sad to see it go. The horses are very much loved, and the kids who ride there are going to miss them so much.  I got involved as a volunteer two months ago.  Some of the horses that you probably met in 2001 are still there today.

I will definitely look up Timberlake's. I am going to need to take lessons. Resi is my first experience riding a gaited horse. Needless to say, I'm hooked!  There's no going back now, is there?

I took equitation classes at that barn (before I bought my first horse) when it was Hidden Valley Farm, in 2001.  Sorry to hear of it's closing.

(Our farm is on the westside of the lake off Raytown Road south of the marina, north of High Grove.  About 3 miles from the equestrian park.)

Once you get your boy home and become involved in the riding community...you'll no doubt find lots of riding buddies in your neighborhood.

BTW, there is a certified trail clinician north of Excelsior Springs, Kevin Timberlake (I believe his barn is simply called "Timberlake's) several of my friends up north have taken lessons with him and have nothing but good things to say.  He's a gaited horse rider, too!

Good luck!

Thanks very much Hope! I'll definitely check these out.

My horse, Resi, is currently stabled very near you, at Valley View Farm at 470 & View High.

Lots of nice horses for sale there right now, if you know anyone who's looking. We need to find good homes for them soon, including several Walkers, Fox Trotters, Arabs and Quarter Horses.

The stable is shutting down at the end of this month.  It's sad. :(

Sher, you have a very active saddle club in NKC:  http://home.kc.rr.com/kearneysaddle

The Kansas City Regional Foxtrotting Horse Assn. also hosts a lot of rides.  You don't have to own a MFT to join:

Nice folks in both clubs!

Hope - near Longview Lake

I'm a new horse owner, looking for a trail riding buddy.  :)

I'll be stabling my new horse in the northland. We have some fantastic forested trails.
