So your 'first home' isn't your first experience with fencing. That's good.:)

I see fences put in wrong all the time. It's like people don't have any common sense. When cosmetic looks come before purpose it makes me sad.

Lakota your reason was the same thing Jerry said,  but my intial thought is always "beauty first",  I like the look of the posts plus I just thought the smooth side seemed safer for the horses.

Spotted, you bring up a good point. A lot of people that have never installed fence before (or don't know the right way) want to do it that way. Whatever type of fencing materials you use, you should always put it on the 'inside' of the posts. That way any pressure applied by the animals is borne by the posts rather than merely by the fasteners (nails/staples).

One fella asked my good friend and experienced horseman to stop by and see if he could determine why his cattle kept getting out. Then he got mad when the answer was as simple as "Your fence is on the wrong side of the posts."::)

Here is our wooden fence,  Oh and we put the smooth side in to the horses and put the poles to the outside, so not to have the poles for the horses to snag on,  I know a lot of people do it the opposite because they prefer the look of smooth side out, but I like mine the way we have it.

This first picture was before I put up the tape and the hot wire and taken from inside the pasture.

I'll run electric on the top and middle if I need to. One of my Rockies will eat through the boards and it tears up his gorgeous mane. So, as soon as I see him doing that I'll run either tape or a wire. And my draft cross stands on gates and round pens. So, I have to use the gates that have wire fencing and not just the corral pipes.

You can still run a strand of the old fashioned electric wire just above the top and middle boards to keep them from chewing and pushing on it. That wire is pretty cheap to buy.

Like somebody else posted, it sometimes helps if you run a strand on top of your gates to keep them from getting all beat up between horses that like to dink around (fight) over them too.

I'm pretty sure we're going with 3 board fencing. I like the look of it and the ease of installation. We price vinyl panel fencing but it's just too expensive for us at the moment.

We use the 1/2" white ribbon electric fence on the top just so they can see it and I think it helps with the deer vision too. Then for the second row we use the aluminum wire like Spotd, it will stretch a long ways and will usually break the insulators first. When introducing a new horse or new fence, I will put survy tape all over so they can see it. I have seen mine run and do a sliding stop right in front of it.

You will get there just be patient, seems like there is always just one more thing and one more thing, but eventually your dream comes true.

Oh and on the high tensile wire, we chose to use Aluminum wire, it will strech before it breaks then break, we are a good ways off the road and when they know its hot they stay back anyway, but I know there are some crazy ones out there.

My BIL bought a new horse and after a couple weeks of introduction put the herd together and about 4 days later the new horse ran there mare threw the wire and cut her leg down to the bone, she took over a year to heal and still had off and on issues with the leg 3 yrs later till they decided to put her down.

But now I am one to make sure every nook and cranny is safe for my horses and everything done right and I still get some out of the blue injuries, so no matter how safe it is they will find a way to do something .:gr1 :

We're so close! Moving day is only 11 days away. We hit another snag last week. The land survey is invalid/too old. So, the land must be resurveyed before the deed can be sold. Now we wait. . .again. Hopefully the survey will take place this week. And we're scheduled to close on or before the 27th. We're scheduled to move on the 29th. Nothing like cuttin' it close, right?

Ya, I was really impressed with this coated wire. I just think it's the safest kind of fencing when something crazy like that happens, especially if you use the tension springs. The hot cote strands will keep them off of it, and if they do get into it they can't get hurt.

I guess it does cost a little bit. I thought it was pretty reasonable but my friend said it wasn't real cheap. You do get what you pay for though....

That's a great story!!! Wowwee! I was waiting for the list of injuries. You just never know what horses are going to do to themselves.

sorry it took so long to get back to you! We only have 2 horses and about a total of 40 acres of pasture, so splitting it up is alot easier than for your herd! We do have the hot coat from Ramm as the top wire for the high tensile fields, but just use plain old electric rope from tractor supply for the rest. The horses respect that just fine. We have a solar charger on the fence, and have a battery operated charger just in case. We will hopefully be able to get electricity to the largest fence with a permament charger soon, but the solar panel one works just fine.

Like i said earlier, we have done very well with just the electric rope. A neighbor's horse (which is crazy and will likely injure someone someday) did a total bolt when my dog just barked (was nowhere near her). Thank God my friend was off the horse when she bolted--she ran thru my high tensile wire at TWO separate locations, breaking 5 strands of high tensile wire, the hot coat and a total of 8 fence posts. If it had been my horse, the horse would have been sliced to ribbons, and likely minus body parts. That stupid horse had only scratches and all the fur rubbed off her chest.

so sorry about the snafu with the survey--it will all work out, just take a deep breath and about 6 TUMS!

I really like the look of that fencing. They show a picture with one of the thick flex panels at the top, which I also really like. I'll have my husband price it! Thanks for the tip!

Ugh! Another bump in the road. Our closing was supposed to be this morning. But, a half hour before our appointment we got a call from the mortgage broker saying the land survey was out of date and a new survey must be taken before the land can be transferred into our name. They couldn't have discovered this earlier? Who runs this lemonade stand anyhow?

We're supposed to move in 17 days and we haven't actually purchased the place yet. Our house is sold and we're supposed to be out July 1st. Someone, somewhere better work FAST! Our realtor is awesome and I trust her to take care of us. The seller and his realtor also know that we're working on a deadline for our move in date. So, hopefully if we close on the 28th we can still move in on the 29th as planned.

We put the offer in on the house on the 2nd of May. What a long road it has been, and still is.

O.K., I found out they got it from Ramm Fence. http://www.rammfence.com  It's called coated wire flex fence, and the one with the conductive carbon strips is called 'Hot Coat'. I think they were in Bryon, Ohio? The way they talked, it wasn't exactly the cheapest thing around, but it is the best thing going for horses IMHO. Check it out & be informed before you spend your hard earned money.:w2 PM me if you have any questions about how we put it up.:)

Thanks for the fence tip, Lakota. We looked into Centaur but it was just too expensive with the purchase of a house as well.
