Here is a pic. of the Imus Comfort Gait bit (they have a copper roller unlike the pictured version). The other one is called the Imus Training and Transition bit.

Hi,

Lakota's advice is always reliable.  You'll find there are often a lot of page views. . .but many of them are people who, like yourself, are looking for information, so don't offer opinions.  We have a couple dozen or so members who have been with me for many years, and they are my "rocks" on this Message Board.  Since I sometimes have little time to catch up on here, I count on them to be my "gaited horse guru clones."  And they rarely let me down!

I agree with Lakota - your horse will probably do best with the curb bit.

Thank you Lokata! Crazy 35 people viewed this and only you responded. I see that i posted in the wrong forum. Oops!!! Money is an issue so I won't buy the training bit. But I guess if I have a hard time with this Comfort Gait Bit i will have to spend the money on the Training Bit. Thanks again. I'm going to try to find the correct forum and read thru it too. Respect, CC

This pic. is the Imus Training and Transition bit. (Also the topic heading you posted under.) The article you linked is about the Imus Comfort Gait bit (the longer shanked version). If money is not an issue, I would buy both bits and start with the Training and Transition. Otherwise I would just get the Comfort Gait (shanked) bit since your horse is fully mature. You should be able to transition him to it w/o needing the Training and Transition bit.

I have a Paso Fino mare that I started in a rope halter, then used the 'snaffle' rings on the Comfort Gait bit, and finally moved down to the lower rings on the shanks. It is the only bit she has ever worn. Those unfamiliar with this bit are quick to think that it is too wide. This is not an issue with which you need to be concerned as it tends to self-center and it is designed to hang out some on each side. I have learned to ignore the nay-sayers and the proof is in my horses performance and comfort level.

I also used my Comfort Gait bit to rehab a crazy 6 year old Paso Fino stallion that friends of mine bought and gelded for a trail horse. He was trained by a show trainer and ridden in a spoon/spade bit. He was very unpredictable/unhappy and a little bit dangerous. He was better in Brenda's bit, but I believe he needed some chiropractic evaluations as well, and they didn't want to spend the money on it.

I have gotten rid of all my other bits and use the two Imus bits exclusively. Remember when first using the bit to leave room for about 3 stacked fingers between the chin and curb chain (a little looser than most other bits). I have also found that it is not necessary to have 'wrinkles' at the corners of the mouth, but usually just to 'meet' the skin works well. Of course check that the bit isn't so low that it will bump the teeth.

I read thru forum but still need clarification. This is my first horse and first bit purchase. I was borrowing a friends bit. Is this what I should buy? Is there no measurements or such I need to consider?

Oh, I'm in Puerto Rico on a Sato (mutt) Paso I assume. 13 year old, i just gelded. definitely was beaten into obedience. ... he wore a Hackamore for a while but ran off on me with it. So a bit seems necessary and he has been doing great on rides for last month. But I need my own permanent bit. Thank you!
