I have noticed sunshine highlights on the mane, tail and coat since using Omega Horseshine (flaxseed). My dunn QH had very little mane when I got him, now it is thick and soft and fluffy, lots more and it shines with more highlights.

I love Mane-ly Long Hair products too! They have a website thetrophyline.
I would never chemically lighten the mane and tail, it would be extremely damaging to the hair! The hair grows slower on the horses so it would be terrible if it broke off! They need their manes and tails to protect against annoying biiting flies!

I've been using Manely long for a little while now. I absolutely love that stuff!

Blaze my girl sounds like your Rocky- she is pretty dark when she sheds out and when her winter coat first comes in but because I let her stay out 24/7 she fades badly- but then she just looks like I got a new horse each summer - lol- All her dapples show up. I have found a new product that I LOVE! I has helped my girls hair GROW because it keeps it soft and not dried out and brittle and it lasts for weeks after you use it. It is expensive! Esp. when you have a teenager who's horse has a thick double mane and long thick tail and doesnt seem to know the meaning of the words- a little goes a long way- but it is soooooo worth it. Its by Trophy Line - and its called Manely Long- the maker owns Rocky's and developed it because she was having trouble with her horses manes. I used it on Honey - who has thick COARSE mane -very wavy- and even though it was clean- I could not get my fingers through her mane to finger comb it- dont even think about a brush- but one washing over a week ago and I can still get my fingers through it- and it is still silky. And no more wind knots or witches knots. Love the stuff. I have tried using a 50/50 solution of listerine (plain ole stuff not the fancy stuff) and baby oil- but really didnt see much- although others swear by it.

Many chocolate Rockies, especially the ones with a darker coat, have a mane and tail that turns darker with age. It's just their natural genetics at work. I say embrace it. Personally, I'd never dye a horse. I might use the occassional *SAFE* paint for kids and shows but not dye.

Or, buy another Rocky. I'd recommend one with a lighter coat color, like the boy in my avatar pic. He has a brilliant yellow blonde mane and tail. But, he's only got a dark coat when he first sheds out. The sun naturally lightens his body color to a dark yellow during the summer and winter months.

One that i really like is called Equine hair moisturizer. You mix it with water in a spray bottle and just spray on and brush in. It smells great, not thick or sticky. Makes their mane and tail soft, my horses mane and tail grew better. Don't know if it will help with thickness, but i sure like this one. Did i mention it smells great, lol.
I don't like mtg, because of it's horrible smell. I think it is good to use when you have a certain problem, but not one i want to use everyday. I like Cowbory magic, but i don't like that i have to put on my hands and then have to try and rub it in. Can't get good coverage. That is why i like the moisturizer, it is really easy to use and get in throughly. Not greasy, smelly or sticky.
I am out of it at the moment and have not found a store around here that carries it yet. My have to order online.

Hi Karen,

I heard that there really isn't much you can do as their hair thins like humans.  However, I bet there are some out there who would swear by this or that product....

Just imagine the shock, if you bought a horse from the guy Tessie knew and all of a sudden you see dark roots growing out?

What's good for thickening up a mane or tail? Domino's tail is really thick but his mane is thinning and he has almost no forelock? Have used MTG, but phew...its so stinky and oily!

A friend of mine who has had horses for 100 years did this to her horse many years ago.  He was dark with a white mane that changed over the years.  She wanted it white again.  She went to her hairdresser and asked what she should use.  Whatever they told her worked, with great results and no allergic reaction.  Hope this helps.

Yeah, Karen pure peroxide does turn hair orange. When I first started bleaching my hair in my early 20's (guys liked blondes mot dishwater blondes) I did it at home and nobody told me anything about using a permanent rinse. So I go to the beach and spend the day out in the sun. Couldn't figure out why everyone was looking at me but figured it was my new stunning look with the white-blonde hair. Got back to my car and looked in the rear view mirror and looking back at me was someone in brilliant orange hair.

Don't bleach it anymore, BTW, but do occasionally mist Sun-In on it, or spray the comb to get a streaked look. Imagine if you went heavy on the Sun-In you'd get orange hair too. Karen, she could have just put a shampoo in color on your orange hair!!

When we were kids, my friends used peroxide on their hair and sat in the sun. Worked for my medium brown haired friends, but turned mine (brunette) bright orange...my mother was beyond furious...she had appointment with a photographer to make large photos for my Dad for Christmas. I still have that photo...yep orange hair!

They make Sun In.  I use it on my own hair sometimes.  Any drug store or Wal Mart.  Just spray it on the hair and let the sun lighten it.  It's a very mild bleach.  It won't turn the hair white, but it will lighten it.  Just remember that if you use a bleaching product you will have to keep doing it on the roots, just like the bleached blondes do.

I knew a horse trader who on a regular basis dyed his sorrel horses' manes and tails. Said the blonde hair made 'em sell faster. I don't know what he used though.

I think I would only use something more natural like lemon juice to try to lighten it.

Personally I worry about the dyes and what they could do --cause a reaction or something! I've had a severe reaction to hair dye which made my head swell, my ears seap(OOUCH, so painful) and my throat start to feel very tight --required 3 big cortisone shots in the butt plus oral prednisone for almost 3 weeks to get the reaction settled.! I was one step from a complete anaphylactic shock with closed airway!!!

You might laugh at this, but I had a buckskin that had two white feet. I wanted all four legs to be black so I got permanent black hair dye and dyed them a couple times during the summer.

So, I would get hair dye at the drug store if they make it in white (really really bleach-blond?). If your horse has a really thick mane you might need about 4 bottles. I also think you'd need to keep it off the body hair coat somehow.

Or what about the old product Sun-In? You used to be able to buy that stuff and just spray it in and let the sun lighten your hair. I don't know if they still make it.:t2 :

Hi!

I have a Rocky Mountain gelding, chocolate in color.  When he was a colt, he had the flaxen mane and tail, but as he has gotten older, it has darkened.  It still has light highlights, but I would like to bring it back to the previous color.   I don't show, this is just for personal aesthetics!!  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Love to Gait
