You really shouldn't have much trouble finding a gaited horse to ride in KY!  Don't take offense at this, but when we go camping at Bear Lake, OH (Shawnee State Forest) the backwoods gaiters come out.  They are mostly from KY which is just across the river in that area.  They get on and go, go, go!  I actually feel sorry for the horses.  Not everyone is like that.  There are some pretty good horses and respectful riders out there.   We have a few right here on this board!  Just keep learning and studying and when it is time, you will know the difference.  I was one of those mentioned about getting a gaited horse and learning from the ground up about them.  Everything I know I learned it from this place.  They are still a horse, just different in their movements.

Personally, I have mixed feelings on gaited lessons (if you can find them). It depends on who is giving the lessons. Traditional ways of riding gaited horses aren't in the best interest of the horse and lead to comfort problems (which eventually become behavior problems). Brenda is (one of) the best for having sorted everything out.

I really believe she has laid everything out in easy to understand ways that anyone can pick up. Seeing is always easier than reading (but reading her book is excellant!) so if you can go to Equine Affaire at Columbus, Ohio in April you could see her clinic demonstration. Her dvd's are great too!
BTW, I rode my friends gaited horses for about ten years before I got my own.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I have a horsey friend here who's been "traveling" with me on this latest bug, and she's brought me down out of the clouds to consider exercising horses belonging to others. But I certainly don't want to put any stupid moves on horses that don't belong to me (or for that matter, on one that does!):t2 : So are lessons on a gaited horse something I should also look into? Is that hard to find? Is is that much different than riding saddle seat?

At any rate, I continue to read Brenda's Gaited Horse Bible and continue to be a sponge!

Jane

Maybe you didn't intend it to be this way, but I commend you for wanting to learn first and aquire second. There are lots of differences in the ways that different gaited breeds perform. You are likely to find the breed that suits you best long before you purchase one.

Most of us aquire a gaited horse not knowing anything about them and have to scramble to learn. You are ahead of the game here. Check out Brenda's Gaits From God dvds to learn more about proper gaited riding techniques. That will help when you get your chance to hop on somebody else's horse. Glad you are on the message board!r1

Welcome!  You will find so much information on here.  There are so many friendly horse people on here that you just won't be able to not find a horse.  Maybe you are close to some of those from KY on here that can get you started.  If you are around a boarding stable they could probably use your service for a ride.  Hope your dreams come true to finding a horse to ride!  In the meantime, please enjoy!

Hi and welcome to the board. You picked a great site to be with horsey friends and learn tons about gaited horses. Keep yourself open to the possibility of riding horses that belong to other people and I bet you get some 'takers' on the idea of it. There are lots of owners with more horses than they can keep exercised so you'll be a big blessing to someone and what you'll learn here will be greatly appreciated by every horse you ride. 'Winning!" is the word I hear. :D

Hello everyone! I'm Jane and brand new to the board as of tonight. I've loved horses all of my life; ridden some, but "officially" it's been quite a while. I'm coming up on another one of those "0" birthdays, and the bug is getting to me again. It finally occurred to me that, if I could do this, that the gaited horse would be for me. Don't know if I'll ever be able to buy. But I'm learning everything I can in case the opportunity arises. Maybe even looking around for someone that has an extra buddy that needs some exercise! I'm in Shelbyville, KY and would love to hear from fellow Kentuckians!
