After your response Brenda- I decided to look again at the french link bits and did a google search (What did we do w/out the internet???)  The mouth piece is exactly like my "three piece western snaffle" that I have used for years on my Appy mare- it was the only shanked bit I rode her in- it is fairly mild and I actually use it on all the non gaited horses I ride - gives me neck rein help- but has a really short shank.  So I think I am just going to start her with that one- the mouth will be the same and she can learn about the shank with that bit.  I could have SWORN though that the bit he showed me had a circular shaped center not a flat "bone" shaped piece for lack of a better way of saying it.  Then this spring I will move her up to a comfort bit.  And it saves me money too since I already have it in my tack box.  : )

Aw thanks Brenda.  I will check and make sure its not pinching.  The last think I want is for her to be uncomfortable.  I am guessing I will be looking for a saddle soon too.  I have one here that may or may not fit her.  She has some filling out to do over the next year or so too.

Young ones present such tack issues ::)

It will stink though that Lindsay may be getting the 4 beat before me.  I keep looking at it but what I am using fits Jenny so well that I havent been able to justify it yet. (its a want not a need ) Everytime I think I am going to do it something else comes up (like a new horse) and it comes to a screeching halt.

CRS, I always appreciate and respect your instincts regarding horse training - and you should, as well.  If your young horse is going well in the French Link snaffle, why not keep her in it for a season or so?  (Whoa!  Did I say that?! l1)  One caveat: make absolutely certain there is no pinching at the center joints, as I've seen that all too often.

Ive got an ICB but its Jenny's bit then I wouldnt have anything to ride Jenny in when Lindsay is riding :)

my gut is telling me not to make a bit change at first- move is big enough change and then move to the ICB on the snaffle loop sometime after January.  She is a gaiting machine in what she is in now.  But we are going to want to start working on neck reining soon (ACTHA requires all shank bits to be one handed during obstacles) and will need the shank to improve on that.

I usually dont change a bit unless there is an issue (like I feel it is too severe or they quit responding to what they are using now- or I feel they are ready to carry a little more and it is needed for higher manuvers.  Less is always more.

I'm always going to reply with finishing with the ICB. Before the training bit came along, we always started in the snaffle rings and then moved to the shank. But . . . there are loads of folks out there now that start with and stick with the training bit.

Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions. If you've already got an ICB, try the snaffle rings and see how it goes. If she she likes it, you might want to get the training bit and use it at least til she's a 4yr old (Brenda recommends a full season of use). By then, you should have her giving to pressure like a pro and transitioning to the ICB shouldn't be a problem whatsoever.
Or, You could always use it longer, too.
You've got good horse sense, you'll know if she's working alright or improved. tu1

My daughters horse is currently being ridden in a french link- and gaits very well in it.  But I would like to go ahead and get her into an imus bit but which one?  She has only been under saddle maybe 6 months or so, but has been ridden quite a bit and trail ridden.  I dont want to throw too much at her right at first and I am tempted to keep her in what she is use to at first and then when she has some more time under saddle just put her in the comfort bit- bypassing the training bit.

Thoughts?

Or could I just go ahead and use the comfort bit on the snaffle ring and move her to the shank sometime this spring?
