Yay! That's exactly how I feel about it - Big Lick should be abolished, period. Let's come up with a catchy slogan, shall we? Something like "Only a BIG DICK likes the BIG LICK!" l1l1l1 PB

Whatta- I agree totally about the Big Lick - The whole "gait" should be banned along with everything that creates it. How anyone who has looked at even a video of it thinks it looks "cool" is beyond me. Anyone concerned with the welfare of the horse should be appalled and should be on the "bandwagon" to end the practice. I think I might be doing some posting on my FB page.... Its a start..

But there are those who are altogether against shoes and they feel so strongly about it that they will all but tell you that shoeing your horse is a cruel act. When the soring of the Big Lick horse dwindles down to a debate about the cruelty of horseshoes the acts of soring become less evil. IMO, its important that we do whatever we think we can to oppose the Big Lick gait. We can spend all day discussing what is soring and then argue about it forever. Meanwhile, the horse is still being asked to perform on pads. Maybe that's okay? Not to me. To be clear, I oppose the Big Lick gait. I don't care how the horse does it or the ethics about it. I oppose it completely. I don't care if no chains were used. I don't care if the horse passes inspection. I oppose the Big Lick gait. Thats where I stand on the subject. So, how do we switch our focus from soring to all around opposing the gait? This is my hangup about taking part in the soring threads. Obviously, I hate soring but regardless, I oppose the Big Lick gait. So I say lets stop that.

And my Domino wears lite shod TWH shoes, bent to a rocker toe on his front feet all the time. This is to allow him to break faster and so he won't stumble. It works! He used to stumble and fall to his knees quite often. Not fun! My heart would jump in my throat when he went down! He hasn't done it since these shoes were put on. I am not against shoes either, just not heavy and definitely not padded.

While all of my horses are now "shoeless" I did use liteshod shoes when I was showing years ago. The shoes that I was using were not much more than a keg shoe. They are called Colt Shoe/Lite Shod Shoe in th NBS catalog and have the same measurements at a keg shoe. I did not use the bigger liteshod/plantation shoes as they were, in my opinion, way too much shoe and not necessary. I can honestly say my show boy never had any issues with his feet and the shoes were pulled at the end of show season. If I had thought that these shoes were hurting him they would NEVER have been used.

Amy- I knew of someone - who was caught and suspended- for blocking the tail- which paralyizes the nerves in the tail so they cant "swish"it. Because somebody - some idiot- decided that if the tail swished then they were going in a "pleasing fashion" for western pleasure. So then they also cannot swat flies or any other communication they do w/their tails. Looks like most breeds associations seem to have their evil side. CRS, the ones that choose the judges are the ones on the boards or whatever of the show organization...so its a never ending circle. So many TWH people here in SC think the only way they should be shown is big lick...its all they know and all they like. I don't think we'll ever get it eliminated altogether. At least they didn't mix classes...there were liteshod and then there were the others (big licks). I do think the lack of attendance should have made them realize something they are doing is wrong!!!!

Not sure on the vet thing but I used to know one that would break and set the tails of the ASB horses she raised and showed. That is just not right.

I agree. I have never seen the Big Lick classes in person but I have on YouTube. I was appalled to say the least. But I am not fond of shoes. Period. They must truly have their heads in the sand to not be reading all the literature out there on the damage that "regular" lite shod shoes do to feet much less what these monstrostities do to their poor feet. But again its all about the all mighty dollar. I go back to the judges as the ones that need to come on board to make a real and lasting change. And SPONSORS. If the money isnt there as a reward for this behavior then the behavior will cease. But since many sponsors are also barns that perpetuate the problem (like the vet who was ring steward) that will be a tough sale. What probably needs to happen is a lite shod big stepping horse(s) to enter the class and win. Or no one booking stud fees for the ones that do win padded and sored.

I am totally with you on every point. I have to admit that I am sometimes ashamed to live here in the South. Bonnie and I discussed this issue comparing MD to SC shows. Our annual Rotary Club Horse Show, which has always allowed/promoted the padded horses, and was a crowd drawing event big time when I started going 25 years ago. I quit going when the soring issue was brought to my attention, maybe 8 or so years ago. My husband knows the twin brothers who used to show and are major promoters of the Rotary Club here in Lex. They are 86 now I think. So we attended the show this year...walking horses were late in the afternoon. Very small attendance and they had some liteshod classes, but still had the padded ones. I could not watch, and tears were streaming down my face. The brothers were there and DH talked to them. They said something has to be done to bring the two groups of walking horses organizations together (or the show can't go on) !!! NO. One of their sons is a vet in GA...he was the ring steward. How can a vet watch this crap and have anything to do with it? (I know, he was raised with this...but don't vets take an oath similar to Drs of doing no harm?????)

In what? 40 some years there has been almost no progress in this issue. It is truely sad people are so heartless. The show side of the TWH registry is a complete joke. If you check out some of the UTubes on the slow motion padded up TWH's it will make you sick.

I don't think it is. While methods of detection have improved, the USDA doesn't have the funding to man inspections at all those horse shows around the country. Having DQP's and judges who themselves have been suspended for soring is a joke - it's like asking the fox to watch the hen house! Nope, we've got a long way to go, and the people who do this stuff are determined to continue. I've decided to get as active and vocal as possible. My position until now has been to just show people whenever possible how to do things humanely, and assume that the darkness would disappear once enough light is shed. Unfortunately those who practice this stuff don't come out into the light, but hide in dark closets. . .so I guess it becomes our job to root them out and expose them at every opportunity. I have a great deal of respect for FOSH - they've made a well-organized, concerted effort to put an end to soring, and it is an organization that richly deserves our support. PB

So, maybe it is not truly an increase in soring but an increase in the ability to detect soring. Good point. I hope that is the case.

I think another thing that is going on is that the technology to detect soring has improved dramatically and the people who were not getting caught before are now unable to escape detection. So, maybe it is not truly an increase in soring but an increase in the ability to detect soring. On top of the soring issue, I personally detest any alteration of a horse's God-given foot to accentuate gait. [4]-owner of five naturally gaited [well maybe six if we count Lumos] horses, all barefoot!

I usually step away from the board when it comes to posting my thoughts about the show classes for padded horses. My opinion has no gray area. Therefore, I am closed minded and trying to make an opposing arguement with me is not worthwhile. Here, I would be preaching to the choir. Anyway, here's some vid to support that what you've read is true. http://www.humanesociety.org/news/news/2009/09/cruelest_horse_show_091709.html

UGH. I found some similar stuff today when I was doing my own research prompted by Amy. I guess I was hoping that since I hadnt seen it it was getting better? Anyway head is out of the sand. Found some farms- w/a quick google- that proudly show them riding their poor horses in a show ring w/the pads and chains on- with smiles plastered on their faces and dates of 2008 and I think 2009. The show I went to was sponsored by FOSH so there was none of that going on. Thank goodness. Or they would have heard from me. I still think the judges could end this practice. But if they still allow whole classes w/these pads and chains then... These poor horses continue to suffer the vanity and competitive win at all costs mentality of humans. And it makes me soooo MAD and frustrated that it is so hard to stop it.

Thought I'd share some interesting info I dug up while researching some updated material for The Gaited Horse Bible. I had no idea - and bet most other people don't either. This is so, so, SO disgusting that words don't begin to do it justice. Guys, join FOSH! They are working their butts off to get the word out about this, but it is an uphill battle against some thoroughly determined "good ol' boys." They need all the help and support they can get (I have to check, but I think Gaits of Gold got a lifetime membership a few years back. . .if not, I'm going to!) PB Tennessee Walking Horse fans anticipated that the era of sored horses was finally drawing to a close following the events of the 2006 Celebration, but this has not been the case. In 2007 there were 127 citations for sored horses at the annual Celebration. That number increased to 187 in 2008, and in 2009 violations leaped to over 400 – possibly the highest of all time – proving there is still a need for sustained effort and diligence on the part of those who care about the welfare and future of this unique breed of horse.
