Good solid advice. I have some thoughts to add. The gaited horse USUALLY has more front to back motion as opposed to the up/down motion of the non-gaiteds. The TWH's can be a little pacey sometimes and when going a bit slow, they can be less comfortable than when you speed them up some. A good sized TWH can cover a lot of ground in a hurry w/o working too hard at it which might make it harder to ride with the QH's. On the other hand, a little quick stepping Paso usually doesn't cover as much ground and might be a much better match for your riding friends. They can have more spunk than some of the big laid back TWH's. The suggestion of a Rocky Mountain might be just what you want. A lot of them can be of good substance (somewhat stocky IMO) and if you are still planning on using your existing QH saddle, you may get by with that for a while fit wise. They ought not to be as long striding as the TWH's and more laid back than some of the Paso's. In any case, I reccomend searching for a horse that performs the rack. There should be less of that front to back motion to overdo it on your back. All of these breeds mentioned have individuals that are capable of doing this gait. When a horse is performing the rack, the forequarters and hindquarters rise and fall alternately and the rider is sitting in the sweet spot right in the middle of it all. Like Tntrailrider said, just try out a lot of different horses. It may be that the gaited horses way of going won't work for you, but you won't know until you've tried out a lot of different ones. Yes, some Morgans are gaited. I suspect that usually their gait is more diagonally oriented (coming from the trotty side of things). I really can't say that for sure as I have never had any personal experience with Morgans. I have back problems myself and I have found that diagonal gaits like the foxtrot are not comfortable for me. Good luck in your search and be sure to keep us posted.
