Of course, your veterinarian and farrier are the first experts to consult with regarding any stifle issues. However, working uphill seems to be the regularly prescribed advice. I have a friend with a mule who has a stifle that will lock-up during the winter season when she's not being ridden much. Regular riding, particularly up hill work, keeps her fit. When her stifle locks up, boy is that a sight to see! It's really scary if you are not aware of her issue and you'd swear she is misbehaving, but she's just 'unlocking' her stifle. I'm sorry you're having these issues, they can be really complex and difficult to remedy. If you're doing everything you're being instructed to do, you might have things as good as they'll get. I am a bit confused about your description of his behavior though. You describe it as "giving way, buckling in his hind end". Have you ever watched someone else ride him so you can see exactly what's going on, or either have someone video you? I'm just curious, sometimes things aren't what they seem. Having your veterinarian and farrier watch him move is invaluable. The more experienced eyes, the better. Much luck, T.
