 I feel if he giving to preshure and and has been in a snaffle then go with Imus Comfort Bit . It would be fine you can ride on the middle ring as a snaffle for a couple days until he gets use to the mouth then the shanked bit is the next step to encourage  proper collection and refine him a bit more,
