Wow Tara! That sounds exactly like the reaction Tango had to the SMZ antibiotics that I was giving her at the time. Last year she was out running in the pasture with her buddies and she ripped a section off her hoof. She was on stall rest for a couple of days and was getting the SMZ because the tear was into the soft part of the hoof. After being on the antibiotics for about 2 days she developed a cough. The next day all her limbs were swollen. I cold watered her and turned her out in the indoor with a thick pad on her hoof. When I came in the next morning and saw her, I just lost it. I almost lost her too. She had a temp of 104.3 and it was rising. Tango was so swollen in all her limbs that she could not walk. I had to get a little rough with her to get her to the hose. I know that she was in pain and her head was hanging down to the ground, but we had to get there fast. Tango had a glazed look in her eye and I was not sure that she was actually aware that I was there. I called a friend and she came on the fly. Sandy cold watered her while I when charging down to Tractor Supply to buy Penicillin. The vet was on vacation at the time, but that was her direction. We gave her 30cc in the vein and within an hour her temp dropped. About 3 hours later we gave her another 30cc and her temp cam down to normal. I sat up with her all night and she got better and better and even began eating again around 2 am. I gave her another 30cc in the morning and she was totally fine after that. We did not put 2 and 2 together about the SMZ allergy until this round with the cough and the swelling. We just thought that she had a really bad cold or a reaction to her hoof getting cut. The vet thought she might have had a touch of influenza. We had a new horse come in about a week before. That was the single scariest moment of my life. I was trying to hold it together, but it was tough. Roger had to yell at me a time or two to get myself under control. Well, that naturally got my dander up and we had a couple of rows. It was his way of getting me back into the swing of things!! l1 I told the old fart that he was lucky I didn't take a swing at him! I know what you went through, although Tango never got evil. Thank goodness. The things that we do for our equine babies!! Thanks again and you have a GREAT day! Lacey

Hi Lacey, Sorry to hear about the problem with Tango. You didn't state exactly what type of antibiotic pills you were crushing up and administering with the bute, but I did recall you mentioning injecting penicillin. I just want to share with you that I nearly lost Dixie, my Arab/TWH to a rare reaction that can occur when oral sulfa type drugs are given to close to the administration of penicillin. Dixie had punctured a hind leg. I kept it clean and put her on injectable penicillin for 5 days. The swelling disappeared. A day or two after ceasing penicillin, the leg swelled up again. Back she went on the penicillin. The swelling went down. After the second round of penicillin, the leg swelled again! This time I switched her to an oral sulfa drug. A few hours after she was dosed, I arrived to find all four limbs grossly swollen. By the time I could borrow a trailer and get her to the vet, her limbs were swollen to four times their normal size and she could not bend her joints. She looked like the skin was going to tear apart she was so swollen. She was diagnosed with tied off lymphangitis. The cure was to inject something intraveneously that would give her a 70% liklihood of developing laminitis. I decided to just keep her on Banamine for the pain and pray the swelling would go down. It did, praise the Lord, but she got to be dangerous for a while due to all the leaking vessels in her body, including those in her brain. She bit me so hard she killed muscle in my thigh in one incident. This from a sweet imprint trained mare raised from birth. She also tried to attack me when irritated by me cleaning her corral near her. I thought that after surviving the reaction I'd have to put her to sleep due to irreparable brain damage. She did go on to make a full recovery. However, I researched her condition and it was caused by the penicillin - sulfa drug reaction, rare, often fatal. I'd owned horses for 20 years and never had something like that occur. So, just something to keep in mind. When you mentioned your horse swelling up, it just made me think of my experience. Meanwhile, I sure hope Tango is healing up well. She sounds like a very sweet horse! Tara

"She really has nice muscles!!" that's the understatement of the year! She's built like a "...BRICKHOUSE!...SHE'S MIGHTY, MIGHTY...JUST LETTIN' IT ALL HANG OUT...BRICKHOUSE!...." I'll have to get some pics of Tango to post. She is massive! And absolutely gorgeous with a petite little feminine head and big soft eyes. too bad she's a trotter or she'd be just about perfect! Glad she's feeling better, L

I think all the prayers are working!! The swelling is down and Tango is acting more like her vivacious self. She was such a little stinker today!!! I turned her back out into the fron paddock and she went just a ripin and a racin around and around. Then she started to fart and buck and squeal and strike the air. You would have thought you were looking at a stallion! Putting her in an enclosed area, even as large as a small indoor, makes her as HIGH AS A GEORGIA PINE!!!! Anyway, I think things are on the mend. I have taken her off the SMZ and she is just getting her antibiotic shot in the rear now. I have to be a little more forceful than I want to be with the needle. Trying to be gentle just bends the needle in her butt!! She really has nice muscles!! Thanks for the prayers everyone!!! I think things are starting to look up. I rode Piper this afternoon and we had a wonderful time. Have a GREAT day and happy trails. Lacey Last edited on Sat Mar 31st, 2007 09:53 pm by lovemytwh |

Me too, poor thing. Sounds like you have good friends, family and barn manager to help you both through this. More prayers for you both and please let us know how things progress. BTW, I've been using my blender for the flax. Ruined the thing, but it works too.

Well, we have had a minor setback. Tango had a reaction to one of the medications that she has been getting. She was VERY swollen today and even her boobies were swollen. We had to have a mother/daughter talk about boys. I told her even though that new stallion is pretty and he has that REALLY nice mane and tail, she is not old enough to be having babies!!!w2 I am not sure that she was listening to me though............................... I have temporarily taken her off the medications until we can figure out what is going on and get the swelling to go away. I cold watered her while her Aunt Lindsey helped hold her. Then we walked and walked and walked some more. I EVEN got the HUBBY to help me walk her. She was NOT impressed with how fast he made her walk. When we left, some of the swelling had gone down, but some was still there. I have taken her off grain and the owner of the stable is going to check on her several times this evening to make sure that the swelling is not getting worse. She also developed a cough. Tango did not have a fever, so that it a good thing. Last year when she hurt her foot, the same thing happened. She was so swollen that I thought her legs were going to crack!!! It was VERY VERY scary. Tango also had a dangerously high temperature -104.3 and climbing. I had to make an emergency trip to Tractor Supply for Penicillin. I am really hoping that this will not follow in last years footsteps. This poor horse and I have really been through the wringer together in the past 2 years. I have never had these sort of things happen to me. Poor horse - they have all happened to her!!! Well, I guess I now have a little more experience and am better able to help out others that have problems. Although, I think I would rather be in the dark about what to do for these things. Oh well, I guess it is only UP FROM HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a GREAT day and HAPPY TRAILS! Lacey

Hay! ;) Maybe you all know this already (but I just LOVED it when I found out!) that if you purchase an inexpensive coffee grinder (mine $12, Walmart) it does a FABULOUS job in grinding up pills in like 5 seconds! It makes a huge difference when preparing medicines... much easier!

Yes! I put some karo syrup in it for her, but she still does not like very much. Tango does not like sweet treats. She is a carrot kinda gal only. I think I will try to puree some carrots today for her evening meds and see how that goes. What a spoiled baby! She deserves it though, she is a dream to treat. Lacey

Cool beans! Have you tried mixing the meds in something kinda yummy (applesauce) or adding sugar into the syringe water? Keep up your good nursing! --Debbie in GA

Thank for the prayers and hugs everybody!!!tu1 I gave her a big hug and a kiss for everyone this morning and I told her that everyone loves her and wishes her a speed recovery. When I came into the barn this morning she neighed and neighed and neighed. It was like she was telling me how her night went and were have you been and she wants out of this stall NOW!!!! Her puncture is looking better, the swelling is down. However, all of her other legs were really stocked up. I guess from being in the stall for 24 hours. I walked her for about 20 minutes and hosed all of her legs down for another 20 minutes. Boy, it was COLD this morning! We were both shivering, but it had to be done. Afterwards, I gave her a nice warm bran mash to help warm her up. I cleaned her wound, so far there is no infection or discharge. So keep your fingers crossed. I left her in the indoor with some hay and water so she would move around a little and get the rest of the swelling down. I took the day off so I could go back over in a couple of hours and check on her. I had to give her the intermuscular shot of antibiotics in her butt this morning. She has to have one every day for 5 days. I bent the needle on the first try! She really has some butt muscles! I wish I had her muscles! She is such a good patient, but I hate to have to poke and prod her. Tango looks at me with those huge soft trusting eyes and I just want to melt every time. It was so cute this morning when I was rewrapping her leg. I was bent over very intent on my task. (You know, there must not be any wrinkles and you have to be very careful about how tight you wrap the leg. You do not want any bowed tendons. I give myself this lecture every time I wrap a horse.) My sweatshirt haed come up over the top of my pants and there was about 3 inches of skin exposed. Tango starting licking my back the whole time I was working on her leg. Then, when I sat up to look at my handiwork, she started to lick the side of my face. What a sweet, sweet girl she is. It is almost like she was thanking me for helping her out. Well, I guess the good news is - HER EYE IS LOOKING GREAT!!!! YIPEE!!!! Her poor eye has given us nothing but problems all winter. The vet has her on oral Banamine liquid every 3 days and that has really helped to prevent flare ups. It is a new treatment. She just went to a seminar for it.i1 Anyway, thanks everybody for your well wishes. I know I tend to ramble on, but it really helps to be able to vent! You all are so great. Everyone always has warm wished and great things to say to pick you up! This is the BEST messageboard and the PEOPLE are AWESOME! Thanks again and I will keep you posted. Maybe I will get a pic. Althought, I am not sure I want to immortalize this moment in time. Oh, I forgot to tell you about the medication incident this morning. I have to crush 15 antibiotic pills and two bute up for her twice a day. She will not eat the medication, so I have to use a syringe. I mixed the medicine up and gave her two syringes. I thought that she swallowed the last one, BUT...... She held it in her mouth unil I bent down to start rewrapping her leg. Yeah, you guessed it - RIGHT DOWN THE BACK OF MY PANTS!!!!l1l1l1 Well, I guess she did lick a little of it back up..... I tell you what, horses always keep you hoppin!! I can't wait for the day that I have my horses at home on my own CLEARED pasture. I never used to have any injuries at all when I had horses growing up. Oh, well.... Have a great day everyone and give your horse a hug from me!
