Tailgaitin, You'll be the first to know! Better yet you can ride her the first time at WW since you have the water experience!! LOL

Brenda, promise me that I can be at that first water crossing with you on that filly.  I'll be sure to have the camera ready!

It's wonderful to watch them grow up! Wait until that first time you get up on them and ride them. I never got to ride Abbie but I have her half sister Jubilee. You think, 'Wow! This is that little spindly legged baby and now she is tall and strong and willing to let me ride.' It's wonderful! Sounds like when your filly starts pawing in the water you'd better have your water wings on! l1

Trailmaid, She'll be 2 yrs.June 5th. I saw her when she was 2 days old, bought her when she was 2 weeks old ,got her when she was 6 months old. We got her Thanksgiving weekend then bought her brother in April last year. She was about a month old in this pic, as you can see she loves her big brother. She would stay out in the pasture on one side with him and Momma would be in the barn or the other side of the pasture. When she was about 1 1/2-2 months old her took her swimming in a deep pond. She loves it when we get a lot of rain and rolls in every puddle she can find ,thanks to bro. It will be an adventure when we get her under saddle, she'll want to roll or swim at every water crossing! LOL I'll have to be prepared like Tailgaitin last summer when she took a swim!!! LOL

That's great Shorty! At least now she doesn't have to worry about losing any other horses from something contagious. The expense of the autopsy had to be worth it just for the peace of mind.

Brenda, your filly is beautiful. It does remind me of Abbie when she was a baby. She has the same head and body shape. How old is she now? The filly in my avatar picture, Jubilee, is a half sister to Abbie (same sire) and you can see the difference in the amount of color. Your filly is somewhere in between the two. I love spotted horses!

Thanks for the update Shorty. That was really quick with results.Thank goodness it won't effect the other horses. I guess that would be a blessing. Prayers still with your friend.

Well the results of the autopsy came back and evidently the filly had a malformation in the spinal cord at the c4-c5 level and any little injury to this level would cause paralysis.  So the good news out of this if there could be any good news is that its not a contagious disease that could put anymore horses at risk on this farm.  My friend seems to be a little more at peace now that she knows there is nothing she could have done for her.  Again thanks for all your prayers they mean a whole lot!

Trailmaid, here's a pic of my filly with her brother. Yours has a little more color but the faces are what caught my eye!

I guess every one of us who love and own horses will eventually face this. I'm sure there will come a day when I will have to again. Hopefully it will be a long while since the oldest of my mares is 13. What helped me with Abbie was knowing that from the time she was born here on the farm to the day she died she was very happy. She was not afraid of anything. Brenda, your horses were so lucky to have you all those years. You helped give them a long life with someone who cared for them. I have said some prayers for your friend Shorty. Losing one is hard enough. Just be there for her and assure her that her decision to let them go and not make them suffer was the greates gesture of love she could have done for them.

Prayers from Indiana Shorty & Trailmaid. When I scrolled down Trailmaid that pic was like looking at my filly with her momma. They look a lot alike! I've had horses for 35 years and in the last 4 yrs. I've lost 3. My beloved Joker was 34 yrs. old I grew up with him and the lost devasted me and my family. My young nephews couldn't understand why my Mom and I were so upset. She told them we had had him longer than their Dad(my brother), then the reality set in to them.  When my husband asked me to marry him he had to agree to let me keep Joker! Then we lost Painted Smoke 23yrs old. He was a big red dun that had been raced and abused. He was given to me because they knew I'd love and care for him. We spent a small frotune on him but the damage to him at such a young age being raced took it's toll on him. Then we lost Teddy's Miss Jo last spring at 27 yrs. old. She fought for 8 to 10 yrs. with crippling arthrites. We would have to litterally get her up if she rolled. Her and Joker were together for 20 yrs. when we lost him the vet had to sedate her she was so upset. My husband and I took seperate vacations so one of us was with her all the time. We don't have kids so our animals are a little spoiled, they are our kids so a loss is very devasting. I can't even imagine loosing 2 at one time. Prayers to all who have lost a loved one!

My prayers go out to your friend. I lost my youngest filly, Abbie last November. The other horses pushed her through a wooden fence. It is so hard with just one. I don't think I could have stood to have lost my other filly Jubilee or any of the other horses Here's a picture of Abbie on her first day. She was 2 years and three months when she died.

I hate to read this sort of thing. We had to put down a special mare several years ago due to a fall after an ice storm. What a shame. I am sure your friend's heart is broken and she is in my prayers, too. Thanks for sharing this with the board.

Thanks for all your prayers.  Yes EVH is one of the viruses they were thinking was a possibility but I dont believe this filly ever ran a fever so the local vet believes she probably injured herself somehow.  But time will tell, I hope they are able to figure it out as there are over 20 other horses on the property.

I am so sorry.  What an awful thing to happen.  I can't even imagine the heartache your friend must be going through.  Prayers and loving light are going out to your friend and her horses.

What terrible news.:(  It never easy to loose a horse but two at the same time is awful.  I'll keep your friend in my thoughts.  Any chance the horse was exposed to EVH?  Lot of that going around lately thanks to 15 horses imported from Germany.  Jen
