I've managed to hurt myself. . .again. I sprained my right shoulder for the first time back in 2006. It's never been the same. I sprain it at least once a year, if not more. Last Sunday I was trimming a horse who was having trouble holding up his feet. I went to pick up his hoof for what seemed like the 100th time and he snatched it back from me. I tried to hold on, but ended up slamming into his shoulder. My head snapped back and I felt a sharp pain run from my head down all the way down my spine. It took me several minutes of trying not to cry to compose myself. And I finished trimming the horse.

I woke up the next day with plenty of soreness, stiffness and pain. I'm feeling much better after a trip to my chiropractor and massage therapist. But, the injury finally warrants an MRI.

I go on Monday for my MRI. And I've been battling a pinched nerve since before Christmas. So, I'm going for a nerve conduction test and EMG on the following Monday. I'm teaching lessons and trimming hooves nearly every day now. So, I'm at a bit of a standstill.

Luckily, I've got great students who are carrying all of their own stuff, along with some help from their wonderful parents. I can't lift anything heavy until after I get my results back.

I certainly could use any prayers, positive energy, or healing thoughts anyone has to spare.

On a good note, I've been accepted into the Equine Sciences Academy. Hopefully, within he next year and a half I'll be a certified natural hoof care practitioner!!!

Prayers coming your way.  Congratulations on getting into the academy.  Gotta take care of your body if you wanna be a farrier!  I think that is hard enough as it is.

I too will be sending prayers that it is not damaged too badly. There are so many wonderful advances in surgeries now, but they really set you back in recovery time and given your profession, you want to avoid that if possible. Best of luck!!!

I've got a herniated disc between my C5 and C6. I go for a nerve conduction study and EMG next Monday and I'll know a little more. But, at least I didn't tear anything!

Thank the good Lord you didn't tear anything.  I will continue to pray for your complete healing.  Take it easy and don't over do it!

So, lucky for me I haven't had any pain since the day after my injury. I've been seeing my kinesthesiologist holistic chiropractor once a week and getting massages at least every other week. I have only occasional mild numbness in my hands at night. I had one nice easy ride on my old reliable horse. But, other than that I'm not riding horses or trimming hooves.

Hopefully, within the next month or two I'll be cleared for a return to duty!

I'm finishing up with my book order for school today. So, I'm planning on diving into my classes next week!

I'm finally cleared for light duty! I've been riding a bit because work needed me to lead some trail rides last week while an employee was having a family emergency. So, of course I said "Yes!" I took it easy, lifted as little as possible, and all in all did 6 rides over the course of 2 days.

I saw the doc yesterday and she said I'm doing GREAT!!! I couldn't be happier. I'm going to get back into my "normal" life slowly. If something hurts I won't do it. I'm going to make sure that any lifting I do is with a strong back and proper posture. And I'm just going to add in a little more every couple of days.

Yay!!!

Sounds like you're using good sense getting that shoulder back in order, Tina.  Worse thing you can do for an injured shoulder is to over-use it.  Has your doctor recommended any easy exercises to help strengthen the surrounding muscles and connective tissues?  Any supplements?

I raked straight stalls for the first time today and I sure felt it by the end. I'm glad I decided not to pick up the manure piles. I know that would've been a mistake. So, I am going to be super careful.

I'm not quite to strengthening stage yet. It's still got some healing to do. This happened to be a neck injury. But, my shoulder has not been 100% in a long time. I go back in 2-3 weeks and hopefully I'll be cleared for workouts then. For now it's just saddles (every other day) and laundry baskets!

I'm on a ton of supplements. Okra pepsin E3, ortho biotic powder, Dermatrophin PMG, Calcium-magnesium, a multi vitamin, licorice extract, and eleuthero extract. I'm focusing on cleaning out my liver which is backed up with steroids and pain medication from all of my surgeries and injuries. I'm going to do this the "natural" way. Supplements, changes in my eating habits, and exercise.

I've seen such amazing results so far with no medications. It's wonderful to have a doctor I trust.

Well, I wasn't careful enough and returned to work too soon. After my treatment last week I continued to trim the rest of my horses, who were WAY over due. I haven't had any relief this week. Now, after only 4 hours of sleep I'm kicking myself. I woke up to numb hands and painful arms. And about an hour of crying. I need to heal.

It's hard for me to take it easy. I guess I'm having a little pity party for myself this morning. Luckily, my chiropractor is a friend of mine so I'll call her later today to get in an appt. tomorrow.

I have to remember to take care of myself. I'm only 30 and I'm going to need this body for many more long years to come. And many more days of hard work and fun with horses.

I guess I'll be taking it easy a little more. I need to focus on getting better. And on listening to my body!

Tina, just take it easy on yourself. Don't overdo it or you will reinjure what's healed. Don't know your financial situation, but sometimes it's just better to hire it done. Maybe you could even swap out some work done for you now in trade for lessons, hoof trims or whatever further down the road when you are stronger.

I never did get the strength in my arm back after rotator cuff surgery even after doing physical therapy and a hard workout class. Doctor's orders were to never left more than 50 lbs. over my shoulder again or I could undo what he did as my cuff is laced together (as if I could lift that much over my shoulder anyway, but he seems to think I used to do that). You may need to scale way back on what you can do even after you've healed up just to prevent more injury.

I did have my instructor trim my draft cross last time. I was thinking he was so overdue that he'd be long. But, all he had was a little bit of wall growth and it only took her maybe 10-15 minutes! That was hardly worth it!

I'm back to doing two feet at a time, which is what I should have stuck with all along. Now I know. And I won't trim any hooves for a week or so.

Tina, What did they end up doing for your neck? Did they fuse it?

Nope, I'm seeing my kinesthesiologist chiropractor once a week or every other week and getting massages as well. I'm finding a lot of relief with that. If the treatments stop offering relief I'll have to go back to the doctor. But, I'm determined not to have surgery on it. All the research I've looked at shows that it may not be necessary and that healing and full recovery is possible with proper treatment.

Thanks. I had that confused in my mind. I hope your treatment plan works out for you and allows you to be successful in your career choice. I was sorry to read about your set back but I'm sure you know what to do from here. Small steps. You'll get there. Don't get discouraged.

God Bless.
