You put together a very nice photo album to preserve precious memories. It really is very nice. I know these are hard days for you and your family. It seems that several of us have had to face saying goodbye to a beloved horse lately. I pray that Chance will not suffer too much and neither will you as time passes.

If ever there be a healing for this disease, I pray it happens for Chance. I'm sorry you are having to go through this. Please know that you are not alone and that many prayers are going up for you.

Wonderful photos.  You'll treasure these for the rest of your life.  He looks like he was a pleasure to have.

Thank you ladies! I really appreciate your kind words.
It is such a horrible disease. Knowing what I know now I can look back and see the subtle signs his whole life. Thankfully I have not had time to do alot of majoring riding in the last 10yrs while having babies and such. That probably helped things not progress as fast as they would have.
I am afraid though my last ride with him will haunt me though. Before I even suspected DSLD my farrier kept telling me his problems were weak stifles and I needed to work him in deep sand and do alot of backing to strengthen them. There is a sandy wash nearby and I rode him for about 20min back and forth through the deep sand. And the most heartbreaking thing is I didn't put his SMB boots on that day. The pain he must have felt just makes me sick to my stomach. He tried so hard to please me that he didn't limp or anything. I started feeling a slight quivering on his left front and immediately stopped. After that ride is when I really started to research his symptoms and found this message board and posted my question on the Farrier section and someone mentioned DSLD as a possibility.
How I wish that was not our last ride together!

I am starting to collect all of my pictures of Chance in an album online if you would like to take a look at my precious friend.

Once again thank you so much for all your support during this awful time

I'm truly sorry to hear of this.  Please take some comfort in knowing that very few people get to have a horse for such a special, life-long friendship.  He has served this world, and his people, wonderfully - a fully redeemed life, even if it won't be as long as you probably hoped and expected.

There is almost surely another very special horse who needs someone who has learned what Chance has so generously taught you and yours. . .

I, too, am sory to hear about the news.  Just be comfortable in the knowledge that Chance had the best life he could ever have had by having you as his owner and friend.  I also had to make that decision 2 years ago with my old Racking horse and I know it is a difficult one.  Chance will tell you when it's time, and just be brave and give him peace rather then let him suffer so you can keep him with you.  It's an awful decision to have to make, but you'll be thankful you can give him a release.

I too am sorry to hear this sad  news.  It will be a hard decision when you have to make it, but you will know it is the right thing to do.  You still have time to love on him and make him as comfortable as possible and there are all those memories.  I had to put my old friend down at 29 several years ago.  He also  got me thru my teen years and early marriage, and two kids who learned to ride on him.  Prayers going out to you and your family.

I am so very sorry to hear such heartbreaking news.  Having had to deal with making the decision to put my best friend out of pain and at peace, I can say it was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make.  It was also one of the most unselfish decisions I ever made.  I always promise my four legged "kids" that they will never be hungry, thirsty, unloved, or in pain.  I also promise them that when I can't keep them pain free any longer that I will do the unselfish act of letting them go.  My boy went to the Rainbow Bridge knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he was loved, cherished, and would never be forgotten.  He will be gone 3 years on Memorial Day.

I will keep you and Chance in my thoughts and prayers.  May God Bless you and your family and may He help to heal your brokens hearts.

Very sorry to hear about your horse's illness.. it's heartbreaking to watch our animals sicken.  I will pray for your comfort and peace...may your time together be filled with special moments between old friends.

My best friend of 18 years "Chance" was just diagnosed with DSLD/ESPA. Here is the post I had just wrote under the ask a farrier section

McAfeeFam wrote: I have bad news :(
We took Chance to an Equine Hospital a few hours away on Saturday. Symptoms were coming back and some never left. I was tired of guessing.
Chance without a doubt has DSLD. With the lameness exam he was 2/5 lame in the front with fetlocks starting to drop and 4/5 lame in the back with dropped fetlocks.
Palpation of the suspensory ligaments revealed thick hardened areas.
This is incredibly difficult to deal with.
I have had Chance for 18 yrs this month. My Grandma bred him and owned both of his parents. She gave him to me as a yearling when I was 16. I did all the training myself and he has been with me during the difficult teenage years, moving out on my own, getting married and the 11 yrs we have had kids.
He is my 5 kids best friend and an invaluable therapy tool for our fosterkids that come and go.
He is still on the AAKG/Jiaogulan that we started a couple months ago. The only thing we can do now is shower him with love and keep him as comfortable as possible until he tells us he is ready to go. How I am going to make that decision I have no idea but I pray I have the strength when the time comes.
Words cannot express the pain I feel....

Please keep us in your prayers as we deal with this very difficult situation.
