I have been target training my 3yo TWH gelding lucky off and on for several weeks now. I started this to teach him to bow so that in the future if there is no mounting block handy I can have him bow so that I can mount. (I'm only 5'2") I have him targeting so far underneath himself at this point that he is almost putting his bent knee on the ground. My question is should I introduce the verbal BOW now or wait until he has the trick down pretty good with the target first? Thanks so much for your help! Melody

You can introduce the verbal cue now for that specific motion. Mel's verbal cue is actually a sentence, "take a bow". Best to find cues that aren't commonly used in everyday vocabulary. I believe I shared an earlier story about one word that was a poor choice I taught Mel, and that was "up"! Eek, given that she loves to rear, she has bionic filtering to pick out that command. Sort of like that goofy Far Side cartoon about the dog. In her case, "Blah, Blah, Blah, up!, Blah Blah, Blah!"
