Vista antivirus 2012 is another online scan. In December, my laptop suddenly stopped working. Everything I tried to open would not open and this very official looking Vista antivirus 2012 kept popping up and since I had let my older virus protection lapse,,,stupidly fell for it and sent 79.99 for "lifetime coverag" WRONG..well, after I paid my computer immediatly worked and it was all good...until...I tried to run the scan on my computer several months later and could not find the program anywhere on my computer! I googled the name and .....wow..found all kinds of info on this latest scam! Well Bank of America credited the amount back and they are going after whoever got paid...I was reluctant to call and admit my stupidity to the bank but they were very understanding and I really didn't think they would be able to help but was sure pleasantly surprised when they credited the money back to me! So, can't hurt to get the bank involved if you get scammed....oh and they got me a new debit card cause of course I used it to pay!! I am much more careful!!

Wow! That is an eye opener. Sorry for your mom's trouble, but glad she investigated and sent the check back. There is probably a few out there that would have kept the check and not even give it another thought. Now that we have to file our taxes on line, it is scary to think where all our information is going. By the way, my son calls his mistake the "ghost tractor" as he never heard anymore about it or regained his money.

Oh NO, PAM! I hope by some miracle he gets his money back. Horrible to know this happens. Recently, my mom recieved a check in the mail from our US government for a tax refund. However, my mom hasn't filed taxes in 4 years. We knew something was wrong when she received it. As it turned out, someone filed a tax return using her social security number and her name and tried to have a refund check deposited in their bank account. But, their bank would not accept the deposit (i assume because the name on the check didn't match the name on the account) and therefore, the government issued a paper check and mailed it to my mom. Of course, she called the IRS, voided the check and sent it back and had to fill out a bunch of 'fraud' information and identity protection forms. Beware and NEVER accept money that doesn't belong to you. If you get a questionable check from our government, call them and find out why. Someone out there could be using your social security number and doing all sorts of things with your identity.

Just thought I would share a stupid mistake by a trusting person. My son who is so trusting in everybody and everything supposedly purchased a tractor off Craigslist from a person in Canada. Now the way I understand it, is, he had to moneygram half of the money and the guy was to deliver the tractor. Then the guy says he needs all of the money before he can deliver it. So my "dumb" trusting son sends several thousands of dollars and guess what, there doesn't seem to be a tractor! Now I don't believe Craigslist has fees or security like eBay to back up the buyer, so I think he is out a lot of money. So please beware.

Deposit cash in your Credit Union/Bank and use whatever credit/debit card or check to buy what you want! w2

***ADDITIONAL WARNING***** One other thing that a friend of mine recently discovered when he gave these kind of gift cards to family members.... CERTAIN TYPES OF THESE CARDS WILL SHOW UP ON YOUR CREDIT REPORT.... especially if they are allowed to "run dry". Please investigate thoroughly before you inflict one on someone you care about. Give them to your enemies instead.l1 Whatta, I'm sorry this happened to you and your friend. Peg

Brenda: Duly noted Whatta: I never buy gift cards. I give *cash*. For some odd reason, it seems cash has been a bit of a taboo; not for me! You CAN use cash anywhere, anytime, for anything, and the change is YOURS!!! I detest 'gift cards' of any sort. Friends and family are picking up on this ;) T.

WalmartMoney Card - Reloadable Visa Can Be Used Anywhere that accepts Visa! Sounds great. Right? NO! Has got to be the worst thing I've ever given as a gift. If you love someone, I don't advise you give them one of these cards as a gift. I thought this would be a perfect gift so I gave one to my dear friend. But when I asked her later if she liked it. She replied,"I hate that damn card." It's nice to have honest friends. Of course I had to find out why. 1.) She tried to use it at Bass Pro shop. Ended up she needed a number from my sales reciept to activate it. I didn't realize it when I gave it to her so I also didn't give her the reciept with the activation number, or the phone number to call to activate it. I thought the $3 I paid up front for an activation fee when I purchased it did activate it. Not So. How stupid of me - So, if you give one of these cards, make sure you give the other necessary information with it. b1 So much for using it at Bass Pro. 2.) later . . . Trying to activate the card via telephone was impossible. No matter how clearly she spoke, the automated system did not recognize what she was saying. She tried it, I tried it. It didn't work. It was a real downer to ask someone to experience this kind of trouble. Certainly not like a gift should be. b1 3.) therefore .... Online activation was easier except that you had to set up a regular credit card account giving sensitive information to include your social security number to activate the card. Are you kidding me?! You cannot even activate the card for a friend (to spare them the hassle of activation) without asking them for some very private information. I was so upset at the online activation process that I ended up setting the card up in my own name and gave my friend cash in place of the ***%$#@&^* card. 4.) I paid $3.00 upfront as an activation charge when I bought the card, then I found out that the card charges $3.00 each month as an account maintenance fee. b1 This may not be a scam but IMO, its darn close because you are unaware of the degree of privacy intrusions involved in it. Not a good gift - BEWARE

Oh yes, be very careful about all of the companies offering 'special pricing' on DVD's. I purchased several copies of 'Yoga to the Rescue for Back Pain' from a company I hadn't previously used, because the price of the DVD's was 1/3 less than the catalog I originally ordered it from. (I give these videos to anyone suffering back pain, as the exercises are amazingly effective.) The next month there was a $19.95 charge on my credit card. Sure enough, I had unwittingly 'joined' a 'movie club' in order to qualify for the reduced prices. I cancelled immediately, but didn't get a refund as I had unwittingly authorized the purchase. Believe me, I'm being MUCH more careful from here on out. I think, as the economy has sagged, companies run by people with less than stellar character are resorting to sneakier methods of getting their hands in our pockets. PB

Crunchless Abs DVD, is another company to stay away from. A girl at work got scammed just like Brenda. When she called them on it, they said that she had to wait till the DVD came and then she could send it back and get unsigned to the other stuff. She was very PO'ed.

It's a yahoo account, so there is some spam filtering, thankfully.....but....some of the mail I 'want' to get I've left classified by yahoo as 'spam'. Just today (and this was just overnite) I had 38 spam messages and 17 messages in my inbox. Only 6 messages were worthwhile. Jody - go ahead and 'sue'.....but we'll still dislike the Jody's the steal our email addresses!!! to1 lol! Hope everyone has a nice Sunday! Sue

I have just tried to cancel my Dish Network after a so called promotion that gave me 250 stations for $9.99 a month. It was to last one year and of course I did not pay attention to when it expired. It was through my local telephone company so when I received this months bill I was horrified to see my total at $158. The new Dish charges were at $68. 30 . I do not even watch TV because I loathe advertisements. So when I called to cancel they inform me there will be a penalty for my contract was for 18 months...I still have 9 months to go. We had originally purchased the Dish in 2006, but by signing up for the promotion it started from that date again. So anyone with a Dish beware they are out to get you. I pity the folks who have lost there jobs and are locked into this company...

Someone is giving "Jody's" a bad name? I should sue! s4 My favorite is Proactive. I ordered a "sample" kit for my daughter.. was like $9.95 and they put me on a monthly auto order for almost $50 a month! But the bottles were only 1 oz travel size.. 50 bucks on ounce? YOu gotta be kidding me! Oh and I used to use Vistaprint. They were great for getting business cards from years ago. Glad I dont use them any more! The e-mail thing must be very distressing. Can you set some filters on your account so any spam you get is way-laid before hitting your inbox? Be easier than setting up/establishing a whole new account, methinks. As for never ordering online. . .that would make it difficult for small and mid-sized online retailers who cannot afford a full customer service telephone staff. When we sold products directly from GOG, we never could have kept up were it not for online ordering capabilities. As it was, we had two full-time phone people, and another who filled in from time to time. PB

There are so many internet scams and it is sad. I do NOT buy ANYTHING over the internet. If I see something I am interested in, I call the company direct. I also do not respond to pop-up ads (exception is if it's a company that I already deal with like Valley Vet or something). If they are unwilling to take the order over the phone then I tell them I will just order it from someone else. I know that anyone who gets your credit card number over a phone or in a store can also use it, but I feel it's safer that way and I run less risk of fraud, id theft, etc.

My story isn't about getting stung buying something..... but it does have to do with the 'wonders' of the Internet. It's a great place - if we could trust everyone outside of this MB. No.....some lady named Jody has decided to sign up for every list or stupid product trial posted on every page, everywhere - and used MY email address! So now I'm getting tons of spam....all addressed to Jody. "Hey - JODY - we need a confirmation"..... RIIIGHT! She was stupid enough in that one of the place's 'confirmations' included her full address and phone. Makes me wish I was Italian..... p1 (j/k! lol) Not much I guess I can DO about it either.... other than probably discontinue using the account. I've had this account for 20+ years..... the address everyone has for me. Saddens me that some THIEF can do this....and get away with it.

I'm updating this to add yet another warning about a well-known online company that is engaging in dubious business practices. Anyone who wants to use this thread to share their experiences with companies who aren't entirely on the 'up and up,' please feel free to do so. We need to look out for one another during these challenging economic times. I placed an order for checks through Vista Print, and the totaled $28.21. Very reasonable. I chose 'slow shipping/21 days,' as we weren't in any hurry to receive the order. I was careless, I admit - I assumed this shipping would be cheap, cheap, cheap. . .and didn't check my total with shipping on the final checkout page. BIG mistake! I was charged $21 for 'slow' shipping, nearly doubling the cost of my order. I immediately went online to complain/cancel the order, and discovered the only option I had was to get a 'credit for merchandise.' Yeah, right - like I ever plan to purchase from this company again! The website is 'fully automated,' so I was unable to call to speak with a customer representative. So I'm having my say here, where it just might do someone else some good. (I'm also going to start doing more brick and mortar shopping!) PB

Brenda, I would suggest reporting the site to the Better Business Beuro or how ever it is spelt... it will help so many others that way.

OMG! That same teeth whitening ad runs on one of the local business' homepage. I can't believe how people attach extras to charges on your credit card and get by with it. I suppose before you allow a credit card purchase to process, you should ask the total amount to be charged and ask if there will be any further charges from that company or any other company after the transaction is complete. Although it is ridiculous to have to ask anything like that at all! Brenda, Is this the same company you used to send flowers to me? I hope not. Those flowers were so beautiful.
