If her nerves get problematic, maybe a natural calming supplement would help her... I've used Quietex with good results, and I know that there are others out there. Made with Valarian root, they have no harmful effects... and take the edge off their anxiety. Poor girl, she probably doesn't understand any of this! Continuing to remember you both in prayer...

I will remember your suggestions when we get back to regular wrapping. Thanks for sharing. I'm making a list. I looked all over the internet to find a pic of a horse that might be wrapped up like Taylor is now. I can't find any. I'm leery about taking a pic of her in the stall because I don't want the flash to set her into a panic. This stalled mare is becoming a handful of nerves. She is heavily wrapped from above her hoof to well above the hock. It is thick, layer upon layer. Her opposite hind is also wrapped for support because she started stocking up on that leg. I did go online and ordered cases of vet wrap and packs of brown gauze. The vet is now selling me the cotton (pillow top like fluffy) by 10 yard rolls. I was fussing about it taking an 18" cotton square . . . OK, now he is using about 5ft of this stuff per bandage change but it only has to be changed every 4 or 5 days most likely. Changing the wrap is no longer something we can do. The vet has to do it. I'll try to refrain from fussing about costs (tho it is hard to forget). It costs what it costs. I just want my horse well and I don't want her to lose her mind during this time. She is becoming anxious and grouchy. Getting harder to handle. Thanks y'all for listening to my troubles and sharing your great ideas. Bless you, bless you, bless you friends.

Also Whatta, cloth diapers work great for what you will need for wrapping the leg. Wash in the laundry with bleach and they will be clean and germ-free. Store them in a clean zip-lock baggie.

I just checked this board and was shocked to read this thread. I will keep Taylor and Mira in my thoughts. What a scary thing to have to go through. Keep your spirits up Whatta and think positive thoughts. Lots of horses have made full recoveries after extended stall rest. I am sure Taylor will get the best of care so she has that on her side. If I lived closer I would give you a hand, but unfortunately CA is a long way away.

My niece and her husband have been very kind to offer this plan to me. I don't want to burden them with this kind of care. I know how much they are 'giving' me here. I am really touched to know they want to help Taylor and me through this. It does sound like it will be best for Taylor's recovery. I hope this all will come together and we will get her back to sound sooner than later. Complications with long term stall rest have me bothered. I think shortening that by removing the bone all together is as good an option as the wait and see option. (Becky and Roger, if you read this . . . thanks for a reason to think good thoughts.) 1l Aunt Sharon

Yes, I had heard that they definitely know how to charge for their services! Your plan has plenty of distinct advantages... especially since your niece is so kind to offer her help. You will have the peace of mind that comes from knowing that Taylor is in loving hands...

I thought about Tech.. not sure I can afford them. But I really think the vet I have in mind will do as good a job as Tech and he offers home visits if necessary. The plan (sorta plan if this all happens like I hope) is for Taylor to stay with my niece for a while after the surgery and do a good portion of her recovery there. This way, she will be close to the surgeon, have less travel time, and my niece is capable with skills and knowledge for giving her excellent post-op care.

If you should have to resort to the surgery route, Whatta, may I recommend the vets at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA... they have state of the art surgical equipment and facilities. Its where everyone here goes with their valuable animals who are in trouble. They have a stellar reputation. Not much further up the road than Wytheville on Interstate 81. I'll be praying that Taylor and Mira both have full and quick recoveries!

I've talked to my vet tonight about the idea of going ahead with surgery to remove the bone completely. He's not opposed to the idea. In fact, he thinks I should go ahead and investigate it. My dear niece has been talking with a vet in Wytheville, VA. I've put a call into him also. I plan to send him her xrays and ask him if he thinks he can do a successful removal and speed the process to a full recovery. Sptd, I'm sorry to hear of Mira's founder. I too, am so worried about this. Prayer your way.

Oh no poor Taylor and you, I have been watching her thread and to read now it was more serious is a real bummer. Hope all mends in good time and she will stay completely sound for you. My farrier told me last trip out that Mira had foundered and that it was probably with the trauma of the hard foaling and that it has just now made it out to be seen, but she has never acted lame a day in her life, but her eyes were giving her trouble last week and she coliced this week, so she has had a bad run here lately too.

I think we were well on our way until the vet reopened the original wound searching for infection or any cause of the new lameness. Unfortunately, we have to start over again healing the wound and now deal with the broken bone, too. Preventing infection and founder are at the top of the list. The bone may heal without surgery . . . . maybe One thing at a time.

Whatta, I hope everything will be okay. Isn't a broken bone easier to heal then tendons, etc.? It's just the agonizing waiting and keeping the horse up and all that agony (human) that goes with it that's a real bummer.

Thanks everyone. It had to happen from blunt force trama. So, she either kicked something or the new mare kicked her. Either way, we have to accept it and go on with doing what we can and have peace with it. I really appreciate your prayers. I'm feeling emotionally better today. The vet is coming back out to wrap both of her hind legs in full support. Looks like this is the first thing we must do. I'm just trying to take this on - one thing/day at a time.

Whatta, sorry to hear of your troubles and that they seem to keep coming at you. Hope the vet can give you some good news. Here I have been moody, crying all the time at "nothing", feeling sorry for myself, mostly going thru "the change"! But my horses are okay (knock on wood) except they need new shoes. I will certainly keep you and your horse in my prayers and expect a miracle soon. Times seem to be getting tough for a lot of people here, we just gotta keep up lifting each other.w2

Oh, Whatta-Sharon, I've had a rash of news like this from various friends around the country. This sure seems to be the year of bad everything happening and now your bad news. You have every right to be crying and bummed and tired. I'll definitely be lifting you and Taylor up for quick, even miraculous healing. Any idea of how it happened?

Sending up prayers for you both! It's tough to keep your chin up when the hits just keep comin'...and shared tears burn a little less than the solitary ones. I'm praying that G*d's Unending Grace, protection, and healing will surround you and yours.

Taylor's recovery took a big set back yesterday when we came home to find her serverely lame. Called the vet. Got some x-rays done. Turns out all along this wound is a broken splint bone. We are waiting to hear more from the vet about options, costs, and prognosis. I've been sick all week with vertigo and went to the Doc yesterday and got a steriod shot and some meds. Between the shot and Taylor's bad news, I didn't sleep a wink last night. Instead, I cried like a baby all night even tho I know there is hope still. I'm such a drama queen lately b1 Just tired, sick, and bummed. Damn devil been chasin' me purdy hard these days. How 'bout some prayers for my girl? Thanks. Whatta-sickntired-Dramaqueen-crybaby

The 18" cotton pad is like the cotton inside a human cast. If you can image, we are kinda building a cast every day. One small non stick sterile pad over the wound (it never stays in place, one full wrap around the entire bottom of the leg with sterile cotton padding (18" square), 2 rolls of light gauze over that, then one roll of vet wrap over that. It is quite a padded up dressing from knee to ankle.

Also try Valley Vet. Most things unless very heavy ship free with a $60 order. 18" is awfully large to put over a leg. Are you sure you need one that big? My horse had a hole in his leg about 3 inches in diameter and the smaller gauze pads worked just fine. You can even overlap two smaller ones if you need a larger pad. Even that is cheaper then paying the vet price. Vet wrap is aslo stretchy like an Ace bandange. You have to be careful about wrapping that too tight also. The nice thing about vet wrap is that it sticks to itself while wrapping, but you'll soon become so expert at wrapping that you won't need it tostick! By the way, for those of you who use Front Line flea products, I've also discovered that Valley Vet has the cheapest prices around. I can get the 6-vial pack of Front Line Plus for Cats for $60 with free shipping. Did you ever wonder how much money you'd have if you didn't have animals?
