I'm way overdue for an update here.  It's all good news!  Candy has made great strides (pun intended) with her UPF, and we have made a lot of progress together in riding for exercise and fun.

We've not had another episode of the stifles fully locking.  A couple of times, while going up a steep hill, she has hesitated and then I hear the loud crack.  She will mis-step a stride or two and then be fine to walk it out.  I have continued to avoid the tighter circling work.  I always ask her to back after standing, before moving forward (to be sure those stifles are unlocked).  The deeper, soft ground in the arena doesn't seem to bother her if only done in 20-30 min sessions.  We still work the walk in there.  She has been on quite a few adventures onto the trails with my hubby where she gets a good workout as there are more hills than flats here.

With the help of the great support I received here, and a couple of lessons to boost my skills and confidence, I am able to exercise Candy under saddle myself now too!  We have been working the same hills we originally did when I stayed on the ground.  Several weeks ago we started venturing to the trailhead under saddle.  Each time we went a little further.  Finally, this past weekend a moment came when we were both ready to take the plunge!  We joined hubby and an older gent from our barn on a late Sunday afternoon ride.  We worked those hills together for an hour and a half!  Neither one of us was perfect, but we sure did work together.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR ENCOURAGEMENT, SUGGESTIONS, AND SUPPORT.  YOU HELPED ME BELIEVE I/WE COULD DO THIS.  YOU ARE THE VERY BEST!!!  1l

That alpha mare was a little too gentle.  Candy rules their pasture now!  Jack is still asking the other boys if he can play with them (and licking a few wounds) but they're accepting him gradually.  Remains to be seen if it helps the buddy problems.

Candy's stifles are a lot better.  If she stands a while, like for grooming/saddling and then just steps forward you can hear a soft pop.  I make sure I back her a few steps before we go forward and it helps.  We will keep up the hill work.  Did it for the first time under saddle since we had a lesson to get us on track with riding.  Thanks again everyone for all your encouragement and support.

Kudos on all your walks!  I just love walking and talking alone with Millie, but don't find the time to do so often.  On our last walk she met a cow.  Talk about huffing and puffing!  It was cute.

Glad things are looking up!  tu1tu1

Good for you and Candy,

This all sounds great.  Sounds like you are doing a great job with her, and taking the time to do those hills and all by foot, I know that can be tireing, but like you said, Its even good excersise for us. I know you are going to see many more improvements here with her. Cant wait to hear how the next week works out for you both.

Please keep us updated on your progress with her.w2

Candy and I are working those hills.  Both of us on foot.  I think I'm limping more than she is now!  She is taking our little outings pretty calmly now and we are exploring new hills each time out.  When we get to a new spot, I have her stand for a few minutes.  I'm proud of her that she is listening to my direction more.  When we return to the barn area we work a little in the indoor arena, 'cause it's not her favorite place. ;)  The big pasture switch is to take place this weekend.  The gelding will join a bachelor herd and a gentle alpha mare will join Candy in her pasture.  We also have a lesson scheduled for Monday evening to evaluate what our starting point will be.  Keep those good thoughts going for us.

Candy,

Happy birthday to you late.:D

Just caught all this. I have to say Ditto to all that Hurley and others have said. My Thunder has the same thing, and of course it always got well  at the vets.t2 and I know for sure soft sand and round pen circles can make it flare up.  So I dont do them. I have to find other ways to work with him. Sometime just hand walking him my self. Good news is i did lose some weight back then when we were doing all that.tu1tu1

What ever has caused it to happen, the truth is, most of the time, In time, it goes away, then we are good for months and months. It only happens a little now and not often. The Cytle m is very good stuff, I have Thunder on that as well. I also have to say their have been times when i thought Thunder was to much for me, and even had thoughts of making a change in horses, and about that time, he would start responding to my every touch, listining to every cue, So those thoughts got blown out the window. I think he new what I was thinking.s4  So chin up girl, I think you will see some good results here soon, and of course follow your heart on what to do and what is also best for you..w2

How long have you had Candy?  Sometimes even a good calm horse will go through an adjustment period with us.  Doing the ground work may establish a better relationship.

I totally agree, a tighter butt is a plus for anyone!  And there are days I certainly feel it developing!  Luckily, Candy and I both have access to some chemical relief.

I've only had Candy since August '06.  I do think she is still adjusting.  She is in no way mean.  She doesn't buck or resist her rider.  When startled, she will most likely stop dead in her tracks rather than run.  She loves to be groomed and loved on.  She has just become very dependent on her horse buddy (still learning also) and lacks confidence (just like me).  I'm assuming her confidence can be built even though she is not a "natural" leader.  We are considering changing pasturing arangments to see if that might help them both.  Right now I'm trying to develop a plan for us to work on while I strengthen her in multiple ways and consider all my options.  All the support and suggestions I've gotten here have been very helpful!

Hey, I was thinking The Excorcist too!  Maybe not!  The Parelli dvd's have helped me tremendously.  I went through something with one of mine recently and it was the nice people here that reminded me to go back to those basics.  Sure works!  Since I have the tendancy to be slack with my gang, it's something I do a little bit all the time.  Anyhow, so glad to hear she is doing better!

YEAr1Candy and Mary!

BTW, if you have a large round pen you can work her there.  It is the tight circling that causes that tendon to stretch over the "LATCH" and lock back up.  I think the repeated locking loosens the offending tendon more, making it more prone to locking. So bulking up her butt muscles is the goal as it will in effect tighten the tendon.  And doing them from the ground as you are will tighten yours too!  And a tighter butt may improve your riding style and confidence.

How long have you had Candy?  Sometimes even a good calm horse will go through an adjustment period with us.  Doing the ground work may establish a better relationship.  I think If you have doubts about your match no harm in looking.  If I were you, I would go ahead and advertise her for sale and let your trainer show her to prospective buyers -it takes a while to sell a horse sometimes and we don't (over 50 here myself) want to let a good saddle go to waste!!

Happy Trails Girl!

Oh no, remember the tractor thingy from the other thread that started out The Exorcist? l1. I know what you mean about walking the horse. Had experience with that not long ago just in a long bending driveway, it WAS like walking a Great Dane. But it did expose some spooky issues I did not know existed. So really from what folks told me here it sounds like not only are you exercising her but you are also continuing your respect/ confidence issues outside the round pen. Which I believe is a good thing.
