Crissy - My husband's quarter horse is on Corta-Flx with HA (Hydralic Acid) and we've seen great results with it.  But my vet is not convinced that any of the products really work.  He would rather do joint injections - but I think that's a last case scenario.

I like to think that supplements are great.  But a few years ago when I had my mare I had her on a vitamin mineral supplement and she started to get nose bleeds!  Then, another time I gave her a hoof building supplement and after a few days she started acting ill.  So after that, I would never give her anything.

So I think horses are like people, some can take certain foods and drugs and others can't.

I have been told that the vitamins and supplements are the cheapest thing to add to the horse feed - but it is what the industry charges the most for!!

Have you checked to see if anyone in your area is using a Holistic Vet service?  There is a member on this board who is a Holistic Vet - Will let you know the name if I can remember it - he may have some suggestions for you too.

I have used the Cetyl-M joint supplement for one of mine.

Thanks Katherine

I will look in to Pat Colebys book  "Natural Horse Care".

I guess I should of explained what I'm looking for.  I want to get my horse on a good joint supplement.   My vet said I need to make sure it has MSM.  When I e-mailed Dr Dan he said "MSM is just a cheap source of Sulfur" and that his joint supplement "does not need it because of many more bio available sources of Sulfur from the other herbs".   I get a booklet from "Springtime" on natural products too.  I guess I should take a survey of what joint supplement seems to be everyones top pick for great results.

Thanks again Katherine        Sorry I wasn't more specific.

Crissy

Hi there,

I am also very interested in the "natural healing" of horses.  I have been giving my mare something called Exstress....and it is "all natural" and supposed to calm her a bit...but am wondering if it is even good to give each day or do they build a tolerance to it?

I do think there is a lot to the holistic healing of animals and humans a like...I have cured a lot of my own ailments with herbs etc and that was how they did it in the olden days...our medicine today is good, but the manufacturers are the ones that make the money....they don't want us doing the natural stuff cause then they aren't making money!

Does anyone know of any good sites to get natural healing products for horses that is a reputatable one!?

I've used Doctor Dan's Marigold ointment and Worn Check product.  He started out with Grape Seed and  food grade DE products and now seems to have shifted to a lot of junk with sulfates and carbonates in them.  You find this in mass produced, big profit supplements.  Way too commercial now, in my opinion...the quality is not there.

The most important thing is to understand IF and what your horse is lacking, as adding more and more supplements will alter the balance of minerals (esp.) that they need.  Putting them in an imbalance can be worse than just keeping it simple.

Have you read Pat Coleby's book on Natural Horse Care?  It's an excellent resource for horse owners regarding equine diet and management.

I'll check it out. I do not think I am familiar w/ that product line.

To answer your question...probably greed in capitalism. Supplementation is a multi-billion dollar business so many folks want their slice of the pie, I guess. Maybe others find holes in equine nutrition, I dunno.

I think the K.I.S.S. method is the best for horses. I, too, get hung up into the need to supplement bug, most of which I am sure is not truly warranted.

  Thanks for the info!

Is anyone familiar with the "Natural Horse Vet" products?   With SO much stuff on the market and everyones claim of having the best I'm always unsure.  I would love to go Natural if I could but I prefer to hear results from folks who are not paid or prompted by sponsors to give their story. My question has always been if a certain product is so good how come everyone has to invent their own? It seems no one wants to admit another one can work just as well.  This is probably a dumb question since our world revolves around competition.  I'm by no means trying to stir up anything negative.  This vet's products show so much "good for you" ingredients that it sounds to easy.

Anybody tried his products?
