Well, I hunted Monday. It was just as cold according to the thermometer but it didn't feel so cold. The morning began with the sound of a doe blowing and running behind me. My heart sank as I figured the deer would be spooky and not on the move. Time ticked away ever so slowly. Still, I watched the squirrels play and hide nuts for the winter. It was almost 8:00 before I finally saw a deer. A sweet little doe came in to eat corn. I enjoyed watching her. She was so small. I noticed she kept looking across to my left. Finally I saw what she saw. A shooter! Coming in fast. I was sure of this buck so I clicked off the safety on my gun and readied myself for the shot. He stepped into the open as I prepared to take aim. I hear a noise and notice that I can't lower my gun. Darn buck hears it too. He freezes. He stares right at me. I am sure to be very still. "Don't look at him whatever you do. He's gonna run!" I talke to myself. I cock my head just a bit and raise my eyes to see that my barrel is caught up in a mess of vine growing around my tree. I gently get the barrel free and wait for the buck to glance away from me. He gave me just the second I needed to shoulder my gun find him in my scope. This buck is so nervous. He's bobbing his head left and right. His instincts are talking to him. I hold steady. Checking him really good. Is he what I want? Maybe not. What to do? Ack! Let him walk. All the while he is standing right there. I hold steady. I sure don't want to scare him off. "Please walk away", I thought. My arms are getting so tired. He left in a nervous and stiff walk. I can relax my arms and so slowly lower my gun. All the while, the little doe is eating. She never knew I was in the world. Click the safety back on. I made a mental note to get rid of those darn vines and gave myself a pat on the back for letting the big boy walk. Actually, it was more like comforting myself. I might change my mind if I see him again. He had nice horns, huge body, but no real points. He probably need culled out of the herd. Eventually, the baby was joined by her mother and they hung around for a long time. I got off the stand at 10:30, after breaking the vines away, and called it a successful morning. The evening hunt was completely uneventful. Next hunt: Saturday at a new location. I will be joined by one of my best girl friends. I haven't hunted with her in years. I really hope she gets "The Big One." BTW, Hurleycane - those mushrooms in your pasture . . . You need to stop eating those! w2 Last edited on Thu Nov 9th, 2006 08:35 pm by whattarack ____________________ Being Offended is Optional. |

Hey Whatta! You'll love this critter story - Looked out my door to let Enzo in, and saw a critter he had run up our light pole kinda sillouetted on the wire - A Bunny Rabbit??? Wow I figured Enzo must've really scared him!! Did not know Bunnies could climb like that with those little front feet and those big back feet - He just sat there - kinda stunned - and just when I decided I needed to get someone else to come see this incredible bunny - - - the damned squirrel flipped his tail!!! Swear to God he had his tail curled over his back and then off his head so that in sillouette of the morning light he looked like a bunny! Add to that my vision is not what is uses to be up close or at a distance - Miss you on the board Whatta - hope you are having a great tome with more great tails (just no squirrel tricks - had my fill) Hurleycane You missed the ![]() Last edited on Tue Nov 7th, 2006 12:38 am by |

I too wanted to Thank You for taking me on your hunt with you. I just love being in the woods and watching all the critters. That is what I most love riding Pepe Joe. We rode a couple of weeks ago and got to see a good size buck. Our german shepherd JJ will bring a deer around to cross in front of us so we can see it if she gets the scent of one. She is also a good girl in not chasing them after they cross in front of us. She has done this since she was a puppy, amazing I think. Good Luck in you hunts, Kathie aka pasofinogirl

Thanks Raz. I really wish you could be there with me. We stopped at that country store on the way home last night. I saw a few lady hunters and it blessed my heart. I think this is my 14th season and have seen so few women involved. I am proud of my hubby for always wanting to share "his" special time with me. It is something I never thought I would enjoy. I couldn't have been more wrong. The men I hunt with are all good men and have done everything possible to help me along the way.

WR Thanks for "taking me with you" on your hunt!!! I enjoyed "seeing" the deer that you let pass by,& the other creatures that visited your tree. I am always amazed at how noisy it is in the "silence" of the woods.... It WAS a bit cold, but the company was good & the views amazing!!! raz-|-

Casper, when I look at these things and laugh out loud. Can't think of a single woman that would choose this kind of thing. Can't imagine putting that adapter in my pocket when I am finished. But thanks anyways. Lisa, I know what you mean and what a shame. Gives hunters a bad name. Last edited on Sun Nov 5th, 2006 02:17 pm by whattarack ____________________ Being Offended is Optional. |

Good for you whatta for having a discerning eye...too many people around here just shoot at ANYTHING that moves in the woods. That is the reason so many of my friends will not ride this time of year- even on their own property. ~~lisa

Yep. I'm home. Still chilled to the bone. 27 degrees this morning with a nice WIND. I think it was supposed to get up to 50 degrees but it never felt like it. Had a nice day anyway. No cell phone, no TV, no nothing. Just woods, a fine greasy spoon lunch and more woods. And Coffee from the thermos is so good. We left home at 4:30 this morning. Did our annual meet and greet at a little country store on the way. Say hello to those we haven't seen in a year and wished everyone "good luck". Got on the stands about 6:10am. It was still dark enough that I had to hold my flashlight in my mouth so I could see to cap the muzzle loader. Saw my first deer at 6:30. It was still kinda dark in the woods. I figured it was a really nice mature doe. Big body and very healthy looking. I was ready to take a doe. We manage the land and need to take a few does this year. Had a closer look with the scope and that darn doe had horns. So it qualified for a free pass. Not what I wanted in a buck. At 7:20 I saw a doe and her baby milling around behind me. The acorns are plentiful and they we eating them up. The baby waved her nose across the air and walked right up to my scent bottle. It was fun to watch. She just sniffed it like she thought is was her mama. At 7:50 a small doe appeared right in front of me and stayed there forever. She finally decided to move on. I never saw her mama. I didn't see anything else and headed back to the truck at 10:30 for hot coffee. I missed my afternoon nap. I tried to sleep in a fold-out chair but it was so cold. Had my coat over my head but the wind still found it's way though. When I got on the stand in the afternoon, I was so sleepy. It was torture fighting sleep while watching the squirrels play. Finally 5:30 a buck runs by. Wake up time! He cut into a thicket and I knew where he would have to step out so when he did step out, I grunted him to get him to stop. Sure enough, he paused so I could get a good look at him. Another free pass. But again, he was fun to watch. He calmed down and ate right in front of me for 10-15 minutes. No sooner than he left, a doe came in. She was mature but she kept looking over her shoulder into the woods. I waited, watched, waited, waited. She also stayed forever and was never joined by another deer. It was plumb dark before she left my honey hole. I did get to see a couple of fox run through while she was there. She didn't move. She flagged her tail, stood her ground, and gave a blow but she never ran off. After dark, I could finally sneak out of there BUT, since I failed to mark this trail and the leaves hid the path, I got a little turned around. My darn flashlight kept going out. I'd have to smack it to make it come back on. I found my way back to my stand and started out again. At last I made it to familiar gound and that was the end of the day. Will try again Monday. Then back to work.

TG. I hope you get that ride in Saturday. You bundle up and work that walk. Maybe you can work in 2 rides so Savvy and Snoopy can both go out. When you get done, come over and ride Taylor for a little while. Just remember to wear your fat clothes. You'll need a lot more room to spread out when you sit on her. I hope you feel honored by the request/invitation. I haven't offered it to anyone else.

l1 Shouldn't even have brought it up. This story is only one that a woman (with a sense of humor) can appreciate and it is just not MB material. I've never told a sole. It's kinda like an inside joke and I better leave it at that. Ain't enough liquor in Vagas to get this one out of me. Sorry. Almost let temptation grab my judgement. At least it can be known that I do have limits and boundaries. --
