I did look at the Backtracker, but decided I wanted one with more features. Why, I don't know because I probably won't be able to figure it out. I'd like to be able to map out the trail and print it out on my computer. Yeah, well hopefully I could figure that out. I get mis-oriented a lot so I guess I could've been a sergeant!!

Ma'am, if you go to Cabelas' web site they have several models on sale right now. One that kind of stood out to me was the Bushnell Backtracker. It can store up to three reference points to help you find your way back if you get mis-oriented. It's pretty small so you can wear it around your neck or on your belt. I don't know if mis-oriented is a real word. We used to say in the infantry that officers get lost and sergeants get temporarily mis-oriented.

The Garmin road GPS is not really designed for trails. I don't have the good luck to ride with Domino! I'm looking at the Garmin Dakota 20, which shows satellite trails, GPS coordiates, mileage, and more stuff I probably can't figure out. I think it will come in handy as I tend to get quite confused out there. And the hubby needs something to give me for Xmas, so this would work well!

Oh, wanted to add:  why not just bring along a Garmin or something?  They're really not much bigger then a smartphone and could get the job done just as well.  I have brought along my Garmin a few times and it worked well, but I'm fairly lazy in that I know most of the trails I ride on.  I let my friend use it and it was neat to see exactly where we were and precisely how many miles and how long we'd ridden.

TN:  Now I just can't figure out why in the world you would ever want a trail GPS?   J/K :P

It will certainly come in handy, everyone who rides on unfamiliar or very long/large trails should probably have one.  Although, if you're lucky enough to be riding with Domino, you'll get home in short order, LOL!

I want to buy a GPS specifically for trail use.  I don't want a really high tech one as I don't need it and probably couldn't understand it. I need one that shows the trail, with GPS coordinates (for safety purposes), mileage gone, and one that can store waypoints and a few maps that could be downloaded to a computer (like I'm ever gonna figure out how to do that!).

Do any of you use one of these gadgets, and if so, which  model and what do you like or dislike about it?
