LOL, I am with you. Mine can take me the long way. And I have had it take me down roads that no truck or trailer should go down, I even put it for trucks, that did not help!

I once heard on the radio that a man was sueing his GPS company, because he was hit by a train and the gps told him to cross the tracks!!!

So they have there problems and are only as smart as the person handling it.

That is why it doesn't help me much!

Yeah, my money would probably be on Domino also as I probably never will figure out the GPS.  I figured out my car one though, although I also learned not to rely on it.

Uh, let me think about that for just a moment...no :P

Fortunately, I've ridden on our trails so much that I don't need one, but I also don't venture off very often or travel to new and exciting trails.  Two people riding over the summer wandered off on one of the Oconee trails and their horses stepped on yellow jacket nests   That's the biggest reason I stick to the trail - been there done that and don't care to ever go through it again!

I have to hand it to Stroker, many times he wants to go this way and I want to go that - he's usually right but I know there are plenty of horses who will get lost.  Still, I think Domino is the cake topper when it comes to built-in Equine GPS - flawless, lol!  ;-)

My buddy, the human GPS, gets lost sometimes when driving the car. Go figure.

I've ridden with people who never get lost. It's a trait I wish I had, bt alas, the older I get the worse I get.

Hope you can run it, I just hate techno gadgets. I am spoiled as one of my trail buddies can remember trails in different states several years later. We call him the human GPS!

Sam frequently get turned around so I can't rely on him either. Anyway, we've already picked out and bought my present, a Garmin Dakota 20. Now I have to wait until after Xmas to use it!

Yes, no offense to my Lacey, but I have tried that with her too, and she wasn't headed right either! Of course she'll follow Domino anywhere and often has her nose in his tail so much that it makes me wonder how she can see where she's stepping? :D

I had always heard, if you get lost, just let your reins go, as horse always knows its way back. So I have tried it a couple of times, when i was not lost, just to see if the horse I was riding would head back home. Well if he was, he was going the long way!!

So do not think it true of every horse. But it does seem that some just have that 6th sense and will go home every time. I am sure those that have been trail ridden quite a bit will pick it up. As i have noticed that when trail riding the horses will perk up and pick up speed when the are getting closer to camp, long before I know we are close.

We don't really know where Domino has been, but he seems to know the way back WHEREVER he is...did it at Hard Labor Creek Park in GA too!

Karen you talking about Domino knowing the way reminds me of two stories I have heard. One was when my cousin was riding a paint Quarter horse. He always knew the way back to the trailer. Once they were on a trail ride and they were out longer then expected and the trail became very dark. Her paint had a white butt so she took the lead and everyone followed that white butt back.

I went to see a horse I was considering buying for trails, that was an very nice older horse that had many trails under his hooves. She told me when she went to a campground to ride, that this horse had evidently been many times before, they were confused while out on the trail as to quickest way back. This horse stopped and wanted to go down this little dog trail that was off the main trail, she did not understand why and proceeded down the main trail. She later found out that the trail the horse wanted to go down, was a short cut back to camp.
I did not buy him as I thought the price was a bit high considering his age and he did not gait that well, but was a very nice trail horse.

I did look at the eTrex, but had difficulty scrolling down with the button. The touch screen Dakota seemed more user friendly. I did like the eTrex though. The Dakota was twice the price (but hey, hubby is looking for a Xmas present for me and doesn't mind the bigger bucks!). I'm going to tell him to check that one out too.

TN Trailrider wrote: I want to buy a GPS specifically for trail use.  I don't want a really high tech one as I don't need it and probably couldn't understand it. I need one that shows the trail, with GPS coordinates (for safety purposes), mileage gone, and one that can store waypoints and a few maps that could be downloaded to a computer (like I'm ever gonna figure out how to do that!).

Do any of you use one of these gadgets, and if so, which  model and what do you like or dislike about it?

NOTE:  Which ever unit you buy, make sure you get a WAAS-enabled GPS unit. A WAAS enabled unit locates your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons.. The cheaper units will not have WAAS and will not pick up in the woods and gullies. Do Not get a non-WAAS unit...you'll regret it...trust me, i know...::) :bl1 :

I have had a Garmin eTrex Legend C for about 5 or 6 years now and it works great for what you want to do. I mark all my fishing hot spots on lakes that I fish, hunting stands, trails, places of interest that I might want to go back to. I use it when I travel to lay out my route and return, etc, etc.

Check out the Garmin eTrex Legend HCx personal GPS, this is the unit that replaced mine, as mine is 5-6 years old now. I know Wallyworld has this unit here for $129.99
