I started a horse once with nothing but the comfort gait bit. I never bothered with a snaffle. I began w/a rope halter, then halter and bit, then put reins on the 'snaffle' rings at the side of the mouth, then did away with the halter, then rode with reins on 'snaffle' rings and the shanks (double reins), and eventually just reins on the shanks. It's the only bit that's ever been in her mouth and she rides great. (Paso Fino).

At 4 1/2 years old I agree that your horse can probably go in the comfort gait bit.

I feel if he giving to preshure and and has been in a snaffle then go with Imus Comfort Bit . It would be fine you can ride on the middle ring as a snaffle for a couple days until he gets use to the mouth then the shanked bit is the next step to encourage  proper collection and refine him a bit more,

I think definately the Training Bit will be the place to start. The option of direct reining with it and also the light curb are great for teaching flexing and other body basics.

Looking for suggestions on bits. Currently using a snaffle bit but wonder if I can use the Imus bit with the shanks to train my 4 1/2yr. walker. He is just now getting into shape to start gaiting at a faster gait and need to work on flexing. Should we be using the training bit?
