We have 2 Imus bits. They have developed an open place by the center piece, which is sharp. I've stopped using them because I think they can scratch our horses' tongues.

The separation or loosening of the bit is not considered defective. It usually does not cause the bit to pinch nor does it change the performance of the product. However, sharp edges around the roller is something all together different and would need to be checked out. National Bridle is the contact for Gaits of Gold products. You can find their contact information on the GOG homepage or at nationalbridle.com

Well, unfortunately, the open/sharp area is next to the roller. Because I purchased these two bits before National Bridle Shop began taking care of Imus products, and are most likely "out of warranty" I suppose I'm out of luck. Perhaps that's why I have not heard back from Jamie; she'd probably tell me the same thing you just did. We have two original Imus saddles and they are awesome! I've had friends buy them because of us. They ride our saddles once, and they're convinced and happy. But to purchase two Imus bits after attending the Tucson AZ clinic, and now have them separate like this, with sharp edges, makes me very upset. I love the bit, but they have not evidently been well made.

National Bridle may or may not be able to help you. But, never assume. Give them a call. Let them know what has happened. (I don't think Jamie works at GoG any more. Call NB!) Wishing you the best, Hope

Hope, thank you for your advice. I'll call National Bridle Shop. However, since I didn't purchase the bits from them, I guess I figure they won't be standing behind them. I'll report back to this thread with the results. Thanks again.

Trail Rider, I too, would be very dissappointed to have even one bit to seperate as you describe, much less two. Hope that you are helped with this and please keep us posted on what you find out.

Also depending on how much strength you have, or if you have another friend with strong shoulders/wrist , might be able to just put enough pressure on either end and snap/push them back together.

SunnysMum, thanks for the suggestion. They not supposed to snap together; they should be one continuous mouthpiece. Interestingly enough, I have a couple of friends who purchased the comfort bit at my suggestion and theirs, too, are broken now. Seems the bit has a short lifespan. And as it is now, the disjointed piece is very sharp. If I just bring it along my arm, it scratches me. That's why I won't use it anymore. I'll see what National Bridle Shop has to say, as Gaits of Gold never responded to my e-mails.

I'm sorry for the problems you're having, but a little confused regarding the facts, and how/where you purchased these bits. I've never done a clinic in Tucson, AZ, and Jamie hasn't worked for Gaits of Gold for nearly a year and a half. We have had a few - and I stress, few - bits that separate more than usual in the middle. When people contact us regarding this problem, I or a staff member always respond. Though I hear from others who visited another MB that some of the bits have actually broken. . .I have had only one single incident of this come to my attention, directly. That time, a package came in the mail with an anonymous note, and a badly twisted/broken bit, saying it had broken in the horse's mouth. The bit was so incredibly twisted that it appeared someone must have put it in a vice and really worked to get it broken. Whether that was so or not couldn't be determined, as the sender preferred to remain anonymous. Many thousands of people have owned my bit for 5 or 6 years. Some of the ones we use routinely are that old - and there just hasn't been the common incidence of them breaking down that is reported on another site. Yes, a slight gap sometimes develops, but nothing that affects the effectiveness or safety of the bit. It really is a mystery to me. If your bits are less than two years old, contact us directly at info@gaitsofgold.net, and I will tell you how to proceed to have them replaced. Brenda

Brenda, I'm pleased you've responded to my post. The Gaits of Gold clinic in Tucson, Arizona, wasn't personally conducted by you, but by your certified trainer, Joy Hyska. If I recall correctly, this was her first clinic. I found the invoice for one of the bits in question dated 4/4/07, #371220, purchased directy from Gaits of Gold, Inc. Unfortunately, I can't find the other invoice for the second bit I then purchased for my husband's horse. By the way, I sent a few e-mails to Jamie, however got no response. I'd be glad to forward them to you. That's why I posted, hoping for guidance on how to go forward with this issue. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again.

I had no idea Jamie didn't work for your company anymore. My e-mails were sent and received, however, they were not responded to. Just because Jamie wasn't there, I feel someone should have had the courtesy to reply. The bits in question are very important to the continued training and responsiveness we enjoy with our horses. The design of these bits makes a lot of sense, and they have made a big, positive difference in our horses.

Trlrdr, One of my geldings chews the daylights out of his CG bit. He really goes after that copper roller. I have taken a small bastard cut mill file to the copper where he's turned up sharp edges w/his teeth as I too don't want to cut or scrape the tounge. It was just a minimal thing though & the bit is really holding up very well w/just a tiny amount of wear. My other horse leaves his alone & just loves to gait. I understand Brenda went with a stainless steel roller in the bits now, which should stop geldings like mine from being so playful w/the copper. I know she always wants to do what she can to help us all. (More than most businesses I've dealt with.)

My pony absolutely LOVES her CG bit. I honestly haven't found another one she loves or responds to anywhere near as much. I use mine with a leather curb strap and it works best for me.

Good morning, everyone...I'm very pleased to tell you that I received an e-mail from Brenda Imus this morning. She has requested that I return the bits to her. Then it'll be decided how we go forward with replacing them! I think when my e-mails weren't answered, I thought the worst. I came to the forum and found such thoughtful members trying to help me. Then Brenda Imus posted, and followed up with a personal e-mail. tu1 I've got a big smile on my face right now!

Thank you. Everyone here, including myself, really are 'in it for the horse.' So many people read/listen to all the internet scuttlebut that's generated. . .and are then ready to believe it, or at least expect the worst. . .without coming to this very welcoming, informative, and supportive forum to see for themselves what the GOG family is really all about. Aren't these folks great, tho? PB

I knew you would jump in on this Brenda. And I am so glad you did. I am confident it will all work out to everyone satisfaction, because you are a caring peron that tries hard to do so and I know that is not an easy task. Nothing is ever perfect and there will always be things that will go wrong once in a while. Just keep up the good work. tu1

Johanna, with my two bits, I could move one side of the mouthpiece very easily, up or down. That left a sharp edge on one side of the centerpiece, either way I moved it. I realized that would be happening in the horse's mouth and could irritate the tongue, after I moved it gently along my finger and it scraped. As you can see from the posts in this thread, Brenda immediately responded. My two bits were mailed to her yesterday, in response to her request. By the way, I had already e-mailed National Bridle Shop. They quickly got in touch with Brenda, she explained she was taking care of it, and they immediately e-mailed me they'd gotten in touch with her. That was good customer service on their part.
