Wait till he's two, then go with the training bit.

16 months old??  I would say stay off his back for about a year.  He is way to young to have anyone on him at all even for short periods.  Work on ground manners, in hand trail obstacles, etc. instead.  When he is two I would start using a snaffle and maybe ground drive him for awhile before ever getting on him.  This horse should last for years and hurting his joints by rushing his training and under saddle work would be a shame.

I ordered the Imus Comfort Bit and was happy at how quickly I recieved it. I opened it and was very impressed with the quality and the way in which each side moved independently. My horse is very sensitive and up to this point I was riding in a KK Herm Sprenger 3 piece snaffle bit with not much stopping power(my guy gets going and is often hard to stopr1). I was very nervous to try it because I didn't know what his reaction to the shank would be so I started without the chain. I put it on while I was grooming him. He opened his mouth gladly and acted like he was standing there in a halter-no reaction. He seemed quite comfortable with it. We preceded on our trail ride. I can't say he gaited any better as his gait is naturally nice anyway but I felt he was quite happy with no complaints. Steering took a little getting used to but no big deal. He never once tossed his head or opened his mouth. He was just figuring out what this new thing in his mouth was! My only wish was he would break at the poll a little more than he did as he tends to go a little too high headed. Perhaps this was because I didn't have the curb chain on the bit or he just needs to trust the bit and get used to it. We will try  the curb chain loosely on tomorrow's ride. I recommend it on horses that are typically fussy. If my guy accepted it and liked it,that's the TRUE test!

Great report.

Here is how to transition your horse to the ICB. Following these instructions should help you and him get used to the bit with the curb strap attached.
