You won't believe this... I went to a garage sale of someone getting out of horses, gaited horses to be exact. I went with the intention of looking at a saddle she had for sale (that I bought).. and I thought I would ask her if she had anymore bits than what was there, and she said she did, but didn't bring it out because no one would know the bit, and therefore wouldn't want to pay $$ for it. I said what is it, and she said it was the IMUS bit. Well, I was just looking into buying one of these, and I asked her what she wanted for it, and she said $20.00. So obviously I bought it! My question though is..... this bit has Sweet Iron or something Shanks on it, which have/are starting to rust. Is that how the bit USED to be made, or did she talk me into buying something that really isn't the IMUS bit?? The mouth piece is identical to the one sold today. Thanks for any info! I would suggest posting photos. That would help best. But as far as I know the shanks are suppose to be stainless steel and have been all along.

I wanna say the first ICB I had, was a 'dark' color - not stainless. So it's possible...... Bet Whatta or Jake could tell ya for sure tho. (I don't have that bit anymore - traded it to JoyRider for the training bit - but I guarantee you it was an Imus!! Bought it directly from GOG when they were selling that way)

I'll have to take a picture, I'll see if I dont remember to take my camera when I go to the barn today. goin, yeah it looks identical to one, the mouthpiece, size, shape, actions, etc. Other than the "rusty" sides. Thanks for your reply!

To my knowledge, all the Imus bits have the Imus name etched on the shank.

You got the real deal. The first bits that my distributor had made had sweet iron shanks - I had requested they be black, but rust-proof. These were fine bits, well made, but the shanks of many of them rusted very quickly. Can you say that finding good manufacturers for products has not exactly been a bed of roses? l1 But hey, you got a good bit! PB

I think if you want to get the rust off, you can use baking soda in a paste kind of form. Or my Mom said something about Baking Soda and Alluminum. But I am not sure entirely. I just know that baking soda is safe to remove rust from horse bits because it's not toxic to our equine brothers and sisters. Also soaking in coca cola (I would suggest atleast over night.) but that would make it sticky until you rinse it,but it would taste good to the horse. It's the phospheric acid in the coke that works on the rust. Another suggestion is Lemon Juice and Distilled White Vinegar. Don't bother - the sweet iron will just rust again. Sorry. . . PB

Isn't the rust part of the purpose of sweet iron? To make the horse salivates. Rust Just adds more flavor. Lol

Not to hijack your thread... but since we are talking about the bit and I am happy to say I was on a trail riding site last night and someone was asking what kind of bit for their MFT. There was several people who confirms that the Imus Comfort Bit is the greatest. When I saw that I thought, Wow! that is our "family" they are talking about. Just thought I'd share.

That is so cool. I love to hear the great talk about our family but more than that, I like to do the talkin'. Brenda did an excellent job getting the ICB to the public. I hear the new manufacture and tweek in the design is the best ever.

GoinGaited, it's the iron that tastes good, not the rust. Also, it's the shanks that are iron, not the mouthpiece.

Okey dokey.....I don't have the bit anymore - so don't really remember what part was what. But....I wouldn't put it in my mouth to find out which part tastes good anyway - so I'm just gonna go with your answer. Thanks! l1
