I totally agree and would love to do that but she has the tendancy to spook hard, spin and leave the county when startled. I am certain she will out grow this as she is getting better with time and experience but I hesitate to relax the reins entirely for fear of getting surprised. Wen we are in a "safe area" I do give her her head entirely and you are right the behavior dissapears but we spend alot of riding time in areas where we do relaxed riding but have to be ready for deer and such. Thanks, LezleJ

Hey Lezlee, each horse is different in how they respond to correction. If the "throw away the reins" worries you, then don't do it, but it might be worth a try. My horse was doing it I think because he was entertaining himself and getting one up on me, and succeeding at it. He was not the type to buck, rear, or run away and was very trustworthy, but he liked to aggravate with annoying little things like that. The clinician saw that aspect of it, and by "throwing away the reins" I was not giving him a chance to play with me like that because he couldn't get the pull he needed if he didn't have a rein to pull on. All I know was that it worked like magic with him and he no longer rooted at the bit to pull the reins out of my hands.

No, that brat was my Appaloosa gelding, who I don't ride anymore. He's starting to get arthritis and ringbone and it bothers him to be ridden on the rocks here. Also, he's slow as molasses. He was what I needed when I bought him, and probably still what I need as he's so safe, but I do like a horse that has a fast walk. I ride my Rocky now and really enjoy him. You probably saw my Rocky up at East Fork in 2009 at the Back Country Horsemen of North GA ride. He kind of looks like your Sadie, a red chocolate with flax mane/tale. He's the one in my Avatar. He's a brat, too.

Awww I need to see another pic! I just love the Rockies and KMHs they are the sweetest!! Were you at the most recent ride a weekend or so back? It was great and we didn't even get washed away like everyone thought we would. We had hard rain on Saturday afternoon and night but the rest of the weekend was great! No, I didn't get to go this year. I was at Myrtle Beach all the week before. Six of us old ladies who were good friends when we were single in San Jose, Calif, (some 35+ years ago) have a reunion every 2 years. We chose Myrtle Beach. A couple of them came to my house before we went down there and saw the area around Chattanooga and then we drove down in my car so we'd have wheels when we were down there. Got back late on the 18th, then they stayed the next day. It was just too short of a time to get ready to go to East Fork and besides, I didn't want to press my luck here at home being gone, home for a few days, and being gone again. He's really good about me leaving him to go off riding, but I don't want to rock the boat either! I'll catch it next year.

We may skip that one next year and do an EFS ride instead cause they tacked a $20.00 a person charge for the Georgia folks...a bit steep if you ask me. Don't you live near Chattanooga? I'd love to hook up with you and your buddies for a Chicamauga ride sometime. I love that ride and my buddies and I haven't gotten that way in a while. Maybe early summer? LezleJ

Yes, I live in Ooltewah, which is between Chattanooga and Cleveland. I ride at the Battlefield frequently. I'd love to get together with you and ride. One day they'll get the rails-to-trails in Athens done, as well as the 12-mile loop at Enterprise South in Chattanooga, and we'll have a good mid-way meeting place. I'm also up for the Cherokee National Forest but don't know the trails as well. I'm on the membership list of the Blue Ridge Trail Riders so you can get my number from there, or PM me at trailrider2@centurytel.net.
