Does my Imus saddle have a serial number or is there a way to tell when it was made?

It isn't that I can't post it, but it would be great if you could have tried to answer my question.

Sometimes we don't answer questions because we don't have the answer but we always play nice on here. I can only tell you from my experience about the saddle numbers. It is going to depend on who made your saddle. Did you just get it from NBS? or used? The new ones from NBS have the serial number on a leather tab on the back of saddle I don't believe the date is there unless it is worked into the number. The one I had that Circle Y made had the serial number under the latigo holder on the left side of saddle. It also had the seat size number and the year it was made. I verified the year with the org. paper work that I had with it. There are specifics as when the Amish, Circle Y and CCI made the 4-beats but I don't have the actuate dates on those.

Hi bltmkr744, I have the older Amish-made saddles. Some of them are not marked at all or ID'd anywhere (kinda old). Lift the jockey on the near/rider's side of the saddle and see if there is anything there, in addition to what has already been suggested. If you find any stamped in markings, maybe call GOG Customer Service w/ the info? Hope this helps! --Debbie in GA

Hi Deb. Good to see you. Blrmkr744, Yeh, I doubt you are going to be able to age your saddle unless you have the invoice from the original purchase. If you care to speak to a GOG rep., call Call Jake at 1-877-884-2328.

Thank you for your response. I bought a horse last year and this saddle is the one I used when I first rode him so I negotiated a package deal. I do not have an original purchase receipt for it but I like it a lot. The only numbers I see on it are in the picture below. I take them to mean it has a 16" seat and it has a wide tree, which I know it does. Not sure what the 242 means. Anyone? Attachment: gog1.JPG (Downloaded 250 times)

You are right on the two guesses you made, and I'm thinking that the 242 means that you have the 242nd saddle made. I think that would be the serial number and if so, it is probably Amish made as Circle Y made them for only awhile about 2-3 years ago.

Yes, I agree, Circle Y numbers does not look like this. Yours is probably Amish made but who knows about the date. If I remember right, we discussed this before so maybe you can go back on some old threads and find some more answers.

This was a 16" wide tree saddle made by our first Amish craftsman - probably in 2005, judging from the number. It's not usual to have such a clear idea, as we soon had to use more Amish, and each one had his own methods of marking - tho all had the seat size and tree width. Then CY did their own thing, as did Big Horn. What a long, strange trip it's been! PB

Long story but, I sold my TWH. Still have my Imus saddle and ride n tie so I guess I can stay on the board right ;) Just purchased a Haflinger mare today, will bring Camryn home on Wed. I hope. My 4 beat is a wide, she's been being ridden in a wintec wide, so I assume my 4 beat will work for her and she'll like it more. Can't wait to get Cammy home and suit her up. It was great riding her today thru ice encrusted snow and hearing those huge feet just break thru with ease.

I just picked up an older 4-beat saddle with no serial numbers or identifying marks. Just the logo stamped on it. It's an endurance style saddle with a black seat and mahogany colored leather elsewhere. Brass rings. I know the previous owners had it for a while, but they couldn't remember when they bought it. Any ideas?

Have you looked for the stampings as mentioned in some of the posts above? I have lifted every piece of leather from every angle, and cannot find a marking ANYWHERE on it. Was there a point when NO markings were used? I will check again, just in case (although I've looked twice).

From some of the responses I have read, some of the older Amish made did not have any markings, but I truly don't know if this is accurate or not. I would suggest you send Jake a pm and see if he can help you. Is there any way you can post pictures to send? Just a thought bonnie

I wonder if you got an original 4-Beat, if there are no stampings at all - every saddle made by our designated saddle makers were at least marked with seat size, and most with tree width. One local woman was planning to buy a 4-Beat from us, and got a used one online instead. She had ridden one of my clinic demos, and she and her horse loved it. She put the used one on him, and he bucked like a rodeo bronc! I was able to go to her place and check it out, and found out the saddle was not a 4-Beat, though it had the tooling and "look" of one. No supracor (just some cheap foam), and a rigid semi-QH tree - basically the same saddle she was trying to get away from. We went to where she had purchased it from a used tack sale site, and sure enough, this seller was advertising several other "used but just like new" Imus 4-Beat saddles. Turns out a saddler out of KY (who had wanted to work for me but didn't have the necessary skills) had my tooling copied and put out some counterfeit 4-Beats. . .never could find out how many he actually made and sold. We got an attorney and had him "cease and desist," but those saddles are one reason I encourage people to either buy new, or ask to see the original receipt from the sale if possible. If you've got a saddle originally purchased from NBS, you can ask for the name of the original buyer, and I'm sure they'll check to see if that person bought one. Jamie used to do that for our customers as well, but the computer we used to keep our order records pooped out on us a couple of years back, so those records are no longer available. PB

Brenda: I emailed the seller, who lives only a couple hours from me in VA, and asked her to find her paperwork. Were your saddles ever sold by anyone besides you and NBS?

Upon closer inspection, I found a brown leather-like piece of paper (sticker, I think) poking out from the underside of the fleece/leather. Numbers read: 556509 2392-1601-64 (possibly 54? it's faded and ripped a little) Is this the serial number? Last edited on Mon Jun 14th, 2010 05:15 pm by MustangSally |
