For what its worth regarding Harness Honey...

A friend of mine is restoring a buggy. She cleaned the seat with Harness Honey, and left it, and all her tack in her horse trailer this past winter. She just went out to check on everything, and the only thing that wasn't moldy was the seat she cleaned with the Harness Honey.

She's laid up after foot surgery now, and we've got a date to clean moldy saddles next week. :P

K- sounds good.  Now I need to find Harness Honey.   Doubt I can find it locally. On line vendors?

I found one on ebay which includes free shipping.  Got the 16 oz. bottle for $25.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260771070896&vti=Size%09pint%2C+16+oz

Can't wait to try it.

Thanks for the back-up RCFs.  It's been so long since I've seen mildew on tack I had forgotten what it's like to open the locker on a humid summer day and see green tack where brown used to be.

Here's the Leather Honey home page.  http://leatherhoney.com/index.cfm

There's a store locator page on the site or you can order online.

When my 4-Beat was new I applied the product (it's a thick liquid, like honey) with a cheap paint brush to all surfaces.  I let it sit overnight and then rubbed/wiped the surface.  It isn't slippery at all!  Just soft, pliable and (WARNING, if this matters to you) a little darker color.  Then I flipped the saddle over and applied a second treatment to all reachable rough leather surfaces.  Be sure to get way up under the skirts to help quiet any squeaks. (Don't mix with that talc though).

I used it on the new latigos too and they went from stiff to fully supple.  Best I can describe it is the difference between a stiff dry chamois and a pliable moist one, except the leather isn't wet or limp.  I use it on reins and halters as well, using my fingers to massage it in (leaves my hands soft too).

Since that first time, I just wipe the saddle off (dry cloth if dusty and damp one if dirty).  Doing a good initial application has made maintenance almost non-existent.  Finished leather doesn't take a lot of product but rough leather can drink it up initially.  The 16oz bottle should be plenty enough to treat and protect a new saddle.

I bought some- wont be here in time for this weekends ride but it will be here in plenty of time for the Eastern Shore Ride.

Looking forward to using it on all my tack- it all could use a good conditioning.
