Well,we HAD been doing so well. The little stinker kicked me yesterday ! I put food in his bucket and turned to leave and got a foot to my leg. I got after him! Yup, his  halo got a little lopsided on his head yesterday. I knew it had to come but was expecting it would be when I was pushing him not leaving him alone. Little sneaky stinker . I won't be turning my back on him again any time soon. ;)

That is funny :?.  Ours laid her ears back at me in front of DH and it was like it was my fault.  I saw where LCC has a new gaited baby in.  It is a 3 week old Palomino that "glides"!

The colt is up to about 300# already. I had to buy him a weanling halter. He is learning to lead and back and stand.  His over flexed fetlock has improved about 70%. He is now pretty friendly. He had his feet trimmed and gave a few pulls but was pretty good all around. No more kicking but he is very curious with his mouth  and is being taught to keep his lips to himself before it turns into teeth. He really could use a good run and I will be happy when the round pen flattens out. Right now it s a frozen rutted mess and the colt gets turned out in a small corral with 4 season footing.

Congrats on turning this little guy's health around.

There's an excellent article in Equus this month about turning orphan foals into outstanding equine citizens.  I'd recommend reading it.

Hi Drifters rider, glad your fellow is getting along good.  Mine doesn't kick much either.  She is pretty much into a daily routine and we do have a round pen to keep her in, but she is crazy about green grass.  Just wish we had better fence to keep her in so she can eat all the time.   I have been doing CA foal exercises with her.  She is much smarter than I am about those!

Yay, I got them small enough and posted. He is still Very furry. He has only shed out in the face and knees. He is 3 months now. His fetlock is almost normal now. (It was low and weak before) This week I am calling him Skipper. I might keep that name. Hmmmm.

He is supposed to be black but right now he looks more liver chestnut. He is dark brown with a lighter chocolate colored mane. He still needs to shed most of his body out. He is sooo itchy. Almost all of the white on his front legs is gone. He will have short white socks in the rear..I can see the pink skin. He is 415 # now and is 4 months. Is that about average for a walker/walker cross?
His weak back pastern is now totally corrected. I am so happy about that!!
I have been calling him Jazz the last 2 weeks. Short for Jasper I guess. I hope you like that one Sdlepal. I am going to check on your post now.

Jazz is good too!  Tootsie is so itchy too!  I thought she had some skin problem.  She rubs her tail  and puts it to the side when you scratch it.  I have dewormed her 3 times so I don't think that is the problem.  It is hard to just pet her because she raises her neck up and wants rubbed.   She is going to have black legs, those are showing thru the long hair.  Can't wait till she is totally free of the fuzz.  I am sure she will be a bay.   Is Jazz in with other horses yet?

Finally some hair is shedding. He still has mats of fur hanging on him. Not too cute right now. He gets so sweaty and smelly that I bucket washed him and rinsed him with the hose. He was pretty good and smells a whole lot better. He just wishes his tail was longer. We have way more bugs then we should this time of year.
I did one turn out with him and my ssh. He loves my horse Drifter. He followed Drifter around until Drifter thought he was being herded or chased and took off running. Jazz followed every step. I really think he was following not chasing but who knows. Our pen is too small and has too many trees in it for fast running and so I had to separate them. It was the best work out Drifter got all year!
I am working on leading , picking up the feet, not nipping. He gets 7 pounds of grain and some hay a day. He is not a big hay eater yet.  I will check to see how yours is doing :)

It has been pretty hot around here and Tootsie stays with the other 3.  They just stand out in the hot sun together.  She stinks too and she still has fuzzy fur on her belly area.    I can't give her the 7# of grain now because I would have to bring her in two times a day which is a pain unless I put them in their stalls.  So she just eats with her buddy.  She has a bad habit of pawing the pan and spills the grain.  I am not too happy about that.  It sounds like your Drifter is doing good with Jazz.

You can sometimes take an old tire and set a feed pan in it, or cut part of the 'bead' area away and set one over a feed pan to hold it down. They don't flip 'em over anymore that way.

Good idea on the tire.  Better to nip the problem before she gets bigger and still has the habit.

Jazz is a big boy. He is 500+ pounds. He is now leading well, good for the farrier and good in the cross ties while I brush him. We had a couple big trucks to the barn with our winter hay and shavings delivery so he saw that.
We had a scare tonight. It was raining so I opened his stall door to the barn so he could walk around as I picked his stall. He tried to run out and slipped on his mat. He fell half in and out of his stall and really banged his head and mouth. He lay there quite a while working his mouth and tongue. He had some blood in his mouth. It looked like he banged his gum. Poor guy. He fell in the paddock over the weekend too. School of hard knocks for sure this week.
Oh, he shed out into a lovely liver chestnut . He reddish mane is being replaced with dark brown. I will have to try to downsize another picture. He looks very different.

Poor Zazz, sorry he got a bloody mouth.  Keep an eye on his head bang.  That is how ours got a big bubble type knot.  Vet said it was from hitting her head.  It took months to go away.  500# is pretty big I think.  I haven't weighed ours lately.  She is getting quite tall and has a pretty round butt!  Lucky you to have a pretty liver chestnut.  That is the color my husband wants.  Tootsie looks like she could be that color also and we are still hoping.  But her red fuzzy mane and tail is getting dark underneath.  Her legs really isn't black like a bay, so we don't know yet.  Do you work with your's much?  I don't do too much any more since she is with the other 3.  But she is getting to be a hand full at times.  I have three stalls and the 4th one is for hay storage right now.  So Tootsie runs the barn isle and is loose to graze at liberty.  Sometimes when I go in the pasture on my way to the barn she wants to run and rear up.  I keep an eye on her.  I tie her up a lot when I am at the barn.  She is pretty good at that.  I have come to the conclussion that when the others spook, she does too.  So learning habits, good or bad ones from the herd may not always be good.

Our horses each have a 12x12 stall with a small paddock attached (about 12x 16) Then we have a round pen and a dirt paddock. That's it.. so no pasture .At least they are almost never locked in the barn. Maybe 3-5 nights a year during the winter. So I work with Jazz about everyday. Our round pen just got fresh crushed limestone in it yay! Everything has been so muddy this year with our limited space. So weather permitting, he gets 3 hours in one of the turn outs. Then I lead him around, cross tie him and brush him, pick up his feet and show him stuff. Yesterday , on a long rope I had him circle around me 3 times, come in towards me then back up then circle again. We only work about 20 minutes though. He wants to push into me and I shove him away. He is not shy like my gelding. When I walk him, I carry a riding whip and have the butt ready to push into his shoulder to keep him where he belongs. It's about time to talk to the vet about gelding. He is 9 months now and I guess it is about time :(
