My brain can't even begin to process what I need to take with me to East Fork. So I thought I would start a thread that might help us all remember the things we will need.

Is a few questions for starters: What is the best money (paper or plastic) and speaking of paper or plastic, since I am staying at a cabin, do I bring my own garbage bags, foil, toilet paper, paper towels, napkins? Do I bring my own sheets and towels? Pillows and cases? You reckon EF has compiled a list of suggestions for their guests? Does anyone know if internet connection is available? I know, I know . . . .  but there is still a message board to maintain.

I really don't want to haul anything that isn't necessary. I don't have a lot of extra space in the vehicle.

What are y'all planning to pack?

I don't know about what to take but it's always wise to use credit plastic when you travel - no debits or cash, although traveler's checks can be handy.

I'm so jealous!  Just to be able to travel and visit would be great but to bring my horse and camp - AWESOME!

Susan! I wish you could come!!! It is so far away from you and I completely understand that it would take a grand arrangement to get you from there to there. I will be missing YOU for sure.

Thanks, Sharon - I'm sure going to be living vicarously through you - you MUST take lots of photos and post them for sure.

The sad thing is that we will be in the midwest for a wedding (up north in Michigan; then down to Indiana and St. Louis) but we will be home before EF even occurs.

Oh well, maybe next time!

Oh yes - I've already extended it as far as I can to see my birth family and for being away from work and my horses.  b1

I typically lay a notebook on the kitchen counter and as I think of things I need or may want I write them down and as they are packed I mark them off.

Campgrounds with cabins are all different, some supply bedspread/sheets/pillows and toilet paper, garbage cans/bags and maybe a broom,  but don't know of any supplying towels or much of anything else, horse camping cabins are usually not the taj mahal HAHA.

Whatta, you're lucky in that department.  The cabins at EF are completely furnished.  Like a motel, there will be linens on the bed, towels, toilet paper.  You may want to throw in a bar of soap. The kitchen has coffee pot, plates (bowls, etc), silverware, cooking utensils and probably even a dishwasher, tv.  If you have a lot of folks coming with you you may want to take a few extra rolls of tp and paper towels.  I usually throw in a few extra towels and wash clothes just to make sure I have enough.  I'm sure if you run out that the office will gladly restock for you.  As far as internet connection, you may want to call EF and ask.  The cabins have been updated since I stayed in them about 5 years ago and I'm not sure what they have. in the way of computer services.  Most of them had telephones in them.  There are grills at each cabin but bring your own charcoal.  These cabins are not rustic (except the few like Fern Gap which doesn't have electricity.

Doesn't look like there will be any meals provided, so bring your food or drive to Jamestown to grocery shop.  Sometimes people leave coffee and other stuff in the fridge that they can't be bothered to take home.  You will probably only have to haul clothes and personal things.   I think there is a laundry there somewhere but can't swear to it, but bring your own laundry detergent (put a bit in a baggie).

As far as the campers go, you will need to bring everything you need.  There is an ice machine up at the office.  There are picnic tables at each site but I don't think there are grills.  Each site also has its own trash can.  Some sites (like campground A) have water at each site, most have a spigot in the general area that is used by everyone, just don't hook your trailer to it or others can't use it.  Of course if you're primitive camping you don't get a lot of that.  Campfires are allowed at the campsite but no wood provided so bring it if you want a campfire.  If you are used to horse camping you pretty much know what you will need.

Each stall will come with one bale of shavings (you can purchase more bales if needed, and I usually get another one or bring one if more than just two days).  Each stall has a hay rack and feed dish, bring your own bucket (there is a ring to hang the buckets on).  Most of the barns have individual overhead hoses and taps for bucket filling, just put the hose thru the space between the boards right into the bucket  (I know barns C and D do).  There is a wash rack and hose at each barn as well as wheelbarrows and pitch forks and a manure dump.  Most of the barns have a saddle rack (piece of 2x4) nailed to the wall outside the stall if you want to keep your saddle on it (I never do because I want to make sure it's still there in the morning!).  You can take your horse to your campsite so I just take him there and saddle up (of course I have to be prepared to clean up the manure, not only because I don't want it around my trailer, but also I don't want to leave it for the next camper).

As far as money, you can probably function like you do at home.  They take credit cards, checks, and cash.  I'd bring some cash for little things like ice if you need it, extra bags of shavings and miscellaneous stuff.

Hope this helps answer some questions.  If you need more info I may know the answer and others who have been to EF may have more to add to the above, or you can call EF at 1-800-97-TRAIL.

Wow, only 4 more weeks to go!!!

Tina, I do too.  I haven't been able to get thru to you, and my sister arrives tomorrow and I probably won't have a chance.  When she leaves around end of Sept maybe you'll have a new cell phone and we can talk.  I've got my fingers crossed that your fairy godmother will leave some $ under your pillow (don't want it to be the tooth fairy).

Thanks so much, Lynne, for that great "heads up" on what's there and whats not.  We all will be space challenged to a degree.

I am getting name tags ready - will mail them to the office, so when everyone registers at the office, they can pick one up, fill out the card in LARGE LETTERS, with their username on the top line and their real first name on the bottom line, slide them in the holder and wear it around our necks.  The lariats are all GOLD, so we should be able to recognize each other by the gold ribbons around our necks, then when we get closer, our names.

(Wish I had a better idea on how many are coming, but hopefully there will be enough.  I'll have extras with me if needed.)

Tina, "we'll leave the light on for you"!

Whatta, well we don't need dresses, fancy shoes, makeup (well maybe a little), or coats and ties for the guys!  Just comfy jeans etc.

But I can think of a few that will be necessary:

Folding chairs, a small portable cooler to go visiting or to our "gathering" (know you'll have a large one), and flashlights is all I can think of right now.

A notebook on the kitchen counter for things "not to forget - as we remember them (oh boy, this crs is not fun) is a WONDERFUL idea!!!!!

I am not sure how well it will work, but am going to start a thread to sign in if you are going to East Fork.  Would be nice to have an idea if we expect 10 or 300!!!!!

When I go camping I just do what Spotd does.   Make a list and write everything down you want to take.  I even make menu's of what we are eating and  add those items to the list.  I have been know to make a list and not look at it!

Lynne, you are so thoughtful to let everyone know what is what there.  It always makes for a better trip when you know what to expect.

Karen,  it is final, we will not be there.  But I would still like to have a tee shirt if they are avaliable to those who don't go.

You know, I think this was totally forgotten.  I never heard a thing since we discussed it.  Damn.

Karen, good reminder about the flashlight (and batteries).  If you have to trek to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you'll be glad you have it!  Also, bug spray for you and the horse, matches if you want a campfire, umbrella just in case (it wouldn't dare rain!), rain gear, extra boots in case yours get wet.  There are a couple of ponds up there, don't know if they are stocked but betting they are, so if you want to fish bring your fishing pole.

I have a camping checklist that I've used for years.  I check off each item as I pack it.  The list includes my stuff, horse stuff, food stuff.

Karen, that is a great idea about the gold cords around the name tags.   Also, what might be nice is if each person made up a sign they could post on their trailer, at their campsite (may duct tape it to the electric outlet box or the front of their trailer).  That way we would know who the GOG folks are and can stop and introduce ourselves.

Four weeks from today I'll be pulling in to EF!!!

Pam, I'm sorry you won't be able to come.  I was really looking forward to meeting you.

Sounds like nice cabins, all but one we stayed in were more like "leonard buildings" made to sound like it was going to be a cabin,  so I never expect much anymore HAHA.

Having a LQ is so nice it stays completely packed and not much more than food and clothes to pack, I went threw it good after last trip and have everything super organized and ready to go on the next one.

Hope everyone has fun, but we have never trailered more than 4hrs and prefer to keep it under that, Jerry had wanted to do the Loretta Lynne ride but won't drive that far with horses and after our Labor Day trip I am not pushing him.

Here's my thoughts on T-Shirts.  What if those of us who show up at EF spend a little time together between our rides and design a T-shirt.  We will have PB to help us too since it may be using one of her logos.  Then we'll take orders.  After the ride we can take more orders for those who didn't make it but still want one and I'll see that they get made.  This way there will be less of a risk of ending up with too many shirts, not the right sizes etc.

i1  Here's an idea...a group photo of those who attended on the shirt!

I like that idea.  After all, we have to have a souvenier t-shirt.  As far as my mug on a t-shirt, I shudder at the thought, but it's still a good idea.   Maybe at our Saturday evening get together.
