How long does it take for Nail Holes to grow out? And any advice on what I should look out for or do during the grow out period? I'm having Sunny's one and only set of shoes pulled tomorrow. She's going back barefoot finally! Ugh I hated the extra clean out time for them.

What does this mean? Having shod horses, I'm seriously curious. Do you mean hoof picking?

Thanks.

Yeah, picking her hoofs out takes a lot more work and so much longer with these darn shoes. I am looking forward to going back to her being barefoot. She barely picked up anything with her feet with out the shoes. Now since she has the shoes it's always really packed in and the whole bottom of her foot is FULL of poop, dirt, rocks. everything.

I have been told by my farrier that it takes one year for a full set of hoof to grow, so no longer than that for sure.

After Jaeda's shoes were pulled for the first time, her hooves started craking almost immediately at the nail holes. I seem to remember that they were gone in 2-3 trims though. Your horse may get through that period faster, as Jaeda's hooves tend to grow slowly (my trimmer almost never has to use the nippers, just the rasp and hoof knife).

Seems like my nail holes are down to the trim line in 1-2 trims and mine are done every 6wks.

My farrier always puts a black putty in the old nail holes to to plug them up and just look nicer.

I agree, my horse's old nail holes are grown out by the time he needs shoes again.  We tried to leave him barefooted for a while to start the process but we were on the trail Tuesday and he was so gimpy it was quite aggravating and I had DH put his shoes back on.  Barefoot is not for us, we got too much riding to do.  It does take a year to completely grow a new hoof.  My old farrier told me it is just as useful to massage around the coronary band often as much as anything to help in hoof growth.

Her shoes were never a thought before and I would ride her every where on every kind of surface imaginable and rocks and everything. Never a issue or complaint from her. Then I had that horrible expearince with a rogue farrier.  And she was lame for six weeks.  I ended up having a World Class Gaited Farrier come out, he shod her and we left them for just about 8 weeks. Would have left them longer but the trainer said she was stumbling and needed her toes trimmed back, She had started Fox Trot more than Runwalk or her Merry Walk. So that was another incentive. I just had her trimmed when the Trainer's Farrier came out after he pulled the shoes, now barefoot and properly trimmed she runwalks and merry walks like a little gaiting fool.
