I'm glad the vet is on call for this one. At one time this site had a resident farrier but we don't any more so all we can do is best-guess the situation. Now is a good time to take a deep breath and start writing down your questions to make your time with the vet more productive. If you really, really want x-rays, ask him to bring out the machine when he comes. It is likely that he won't on a first visit unless you ask him to. Most of them (x-ray machines) will need to be plugged into a receptical that is not GFCI protected. We had to run a couple of extension cords from the house to the barn. I'm just spouting that out so you can prepare if necessary. It is possible that your vet may not feel like x-ray is the best first step. When my horse was very sick, the vet gave me a brochure for a credit plan to help me with the expenses. Here is the plan he offered, but there are probably more out there, too. http://www.carecredit.com/ I hope you will share the diagnosis of your horse. I'm sure it will at some point help someone else. Thanks and best wishes, Whatta

I'm glad you are bringing the vet in on this. As a veterinarian myself I am usually reluctant to offer anything that might be construed as a dignosis over the internet. I will say however that your boy has a cresty neck. This, along with the added info that he has a swollen sheath and is on senior feed and a glucosamine supplement makes me think he might be insulin resistant. IR can cause lethargy, mucle weakness, generalized stiffnes, and sore feet leading to a short choppy stride. It does not cause puffiness in the tendons, so you may have more than one problem going on here. Until your appointment with the vet, I would recommend taking him off all grain. The verdict on the safety of giving glucosamine to an IR horse is not totally out, but to be safe I would take him off that for the time being also. The screening test for IR is a fasting blood test, so plan not to feed him anything for about 8 hours prior to your appointment in case the veterinarian wants to check for it. The possibility that glucosamine may exacerbate IR is a good reason that supplements should be treated like medications and used under ther supervision of a veterinarian. I am all for using supplements when needed, but just because they are "natural" doesn't mean they are not without side effects and it is important to understand the indications and contra-indications before "giving them a try." Please keep us updated as you get more information on his condition.

I had a phone consult with two different vets several hours away from us and they said with his symptoms along with the cresty neck and it all starting within the last year after adding equine senior and glucoseamine to his diet their guess is Insulin Resistance. Their suggestion was to stop all grain and joint supplements and start the Emergency IR diet and they said it was ok to give him the amino acid I had already ordered. Watch him closly and update them in a few days. He has been on AAKG/Jiaogulan for 5 days and off equine senior and glucoseamine for a week. Already I can see a huge change in his body. The swelling in going down in his front leg, Over-stride increasing, He looks less puffy, he has alot more energy and even seems happier. I am watching him very carefully and in contact with the vet as well. I also found a natural barefoot trimmer an hour away I am going to start using and see if he can get his angles straightened out. Here are some updates pics.... http://picasaweb.google.com/McAfeeFam/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCJWuiviv7cawUg&feat=directlink

I have bad news We took Chance to an Equine Hospital a few hours away on Saturday. Symptoms were coming back and some never left. I was tired of guessing. Chance without a doubt has DSLD. With the lameness exam he was 2/5 lame in the front with fetlocks starting to drop and 4/5 lame in the back with dropped fetlocks. Palpation of the suspensory ligaments revealed thick hardened areas. This is incredibly difficult to deal with. I have had Chance for 18 yrs this month. My Grandma bred him and owned both of his parents. She gave him to me as a yearling when I was 16. I did all the training myself and he has been with me during the difficult teenage years, moving out on my own, getting married and the 11 yrs we have had kids. He is my 5 kids best friend and an invaluable therapy tool for our fosterkids that come and go. He is still on the AAKG/Jiaogulan that we started a couple months ago. The only thing we can do now is shower him with love and keep him as comfortable as possible until he tells us he is ready to go. How I am going to make that decision I have no idea but I pray I have the strength when the time comes. Words cannot express the pain I feel....

I am SO sorry; you will know the right time, and will do what's best for Chance, I have no doubt. I have had to do it within the last two weeks; while it's very, very difficult, you know when it's the right thing. Dixie
