I would think he could just be overweight and not necessarily IR. Keep working on getting the weight off and keep an eye on him. When I first got horses 10 years ago, I tended to overfeed, especially over the cold winters we have here. I worried the horses needed more hay to keep warm. I put way too much weight on my first TWH I had and didn't even realize how much until I was comparing pictures from when I first got him to after winter. He never showed any signs of lameness/laminitis during this time and never had problems after that. Now, 10 years later I have a mare that I must be careful with. She had some lameness issues last year and the vet thinks she is IR. I work really hard to not overfeed her, and control the type of hay she gets, and although her weight is really good she still gets a cresty neck even when I am limiting her intake. I believe she really is IR and susceptible to laminitis, whereas my old gelding was just plain fat.

Just like with people it will take time to get the weight off. She was feeding him high octane feed. Way too much! Keep on doing what you are doing (you also may want to look into chia seeds- they help with IR among other things)

Does all crest neck horses are IR or can they just be over feed. I just bought this TW who is very cresty neck and can not feel any rib. The previous owner had him on a dry lot and fed 4 flakes of alf. hay and 2 scoops of corn / oat grain every day. The owner had bladder caner and didn't ride any during the winter. I got him and he is now on a green Pasteur , seems to has lost alot of his crest neck and doesn't look as fat as he did about a week ago. I just put on a grazing muzzle after reading all the comments on IR horse.I have rode him 3-4 times since I got him for about 1 hr each time. He still has a cresty neck but not as tight or as thick. No signs of lameness and hoofs are cool , I check them daily. Here is a pic of him the day I got him. I tried to keep him off of the grass but he kept running threw my electric fence.Any comments Attachment: new horse 1.jpg (Downloaded 132 times)
