I heard many times that boots for the backs aren't necessary, but after a few miles on these rocky ozark trails I found out they were.

I am agreeing... rode again today with my barefoot trimmer.  She came out and did Bo, my other QH this time, removed his worn shoes, waiting for his ordered boots to arrive.  He moved nice in the used pair she deterrmined to fit him with.  We trail rode afterwards, me on Rain, my TWH with his shod fronts, her in an appy mare, boots all around.  The mare rode great, four boots all around.

I will start off with front boots since summer is here and riding less, get back boots fitted if necessary.  Rain's bareback feet look good, but I will wait for summer's end to go barefoot with him.

So far, so good :)

I guess I am a bit late to this post, but I used to pull my horses shoes every October, and put them back on in May. This year, I have decided (along with my farrier's advice) to keep them off.

As my horse had already been barefoot for 8 months through Winter, I had a good start. He was sore on gravel, so I did use a hoof solution (with iodine) for ONLY 1 WEEK.... on the frog. This helped with tenderness quite a bit. I have now gone on quite a few trail rides, and he has been great. My farrier who trims him every 3 weeks says, "Every time I come, his feet are better".

I did purchased the Easy Boot Trail, which is relatively new. They replace the original Old Macs (Easy Boot bought the company). They are soooo very easy, and they really stay on. I only use them in extremely rocky conditions, (or should he ever get a stone bruise). But he doesn't seem to mind them at all, and again... they go on and off in a snap! :)

Thanks for the feedback.  I have rode QH "River" in his Easy Boot Gloves with all four hooves, he is doing great both barefoot and in boots, which stay on through our wooded trail rides.  His hooves continue to stay rounded and shaped off while in the hillside pasture and the mystery lameness issues are not re-occurring.

Rode my newly taken barefoot QH "Bo" in his Easy Boot Edge on front hooves, ordered a pair for his back hooves, and he loved his front boots!  He is the one recovered from a serious shoulder injury, back on the trail now and the boots gave great traction on the rocky trails.  Bo moved out beautifully at any speed or terrian challenge, we jogged, trotted and galloped, climbed hills, came down steep hills.  I also noted that shodded horses in our group were picky on the gravel roads, but Bo could care less what area of the gravel he rode in.

Rain, my TWH, goes barefoot next.  I was planning to do it like you have done, pull shoes off in the fall for winter, then stay barefoot, but golly!  Don't know if I can wait that long, lol.

Hope my boots work as well as yours have! I have not gaited my horse in them yet. A friend of mine with Icys has a problem gaiting them in their boots, but Icys have a whole different foot-fall.

BTW, my horse in the avatar is named River too. :) I wanted to name him after my husband, (who, afterall, paid for him!) but River seemed to fit better.

River is just a cool name s3.

I think the key to a good fit on both my QHs was working with a professional trimmer that also specialized in fitting boots.  She showed how the hoof shapes work best with different styles, and she fits for the boot before ordering the size.  Bo takes the Edge on this front, but the Gloves on his back feet.  I have heard on this gaited board that barefoot horses have done good or better in boots when gaiting.  It will be interesting which boots work for Rain.  Or if the boot industry picks up on a boot style for gaited horses.  I did read that the velcor straps need to be tightly wrapped, as this is what keeps the boots on.  So for gaited horses, I would think a style without the ankle straps might be part of the problem.

Yes, and the it depends on how much the horse over-steps. The boots are wider than a regular foot (of course) and if they over-step close to their front hoofs, they can get tripped up. My friend's Icy had a real problem, and she almost tumbled while going in a tolt, but the boots work well for rocky areas where you probably wouldn't want to gait through anyway.

River only needs them on the front, and it is nice that the Trail boots model come in separate sizes.
