Hi all its been a while, Im not much of a talker so I dont post much..lol Just wanted to share, we were lucky enough to get a trail ride in on that 50 degree Saturday we had last week. Ive been working the walk on my Standardbred and I think I may have gotten some gait out of her on the ride...I wish I had it on video to tell for sure.

We also just adopted another Standardbred, he's an 11 year old pacer that came from New Zealand in 04, about 3 months ago he retired and the owners basically came to say good bye and his fate would have been grim...luckily the trainer knew of our club and got word out that this guy needed a home...so now he's ours, such a  gentle giant he is. He was never ridden before we got him and he's already been on his first trail ride and did AWESOME!!! such a smart horse....anyway we hope to have him gaiting too one day :)

Hope everyone had a great holiday and and everyone's enjoying there horses :)

Welcome back.  Thank you for adopting another Standardbred, he is pretty.   They don't take much to ride them if they have been treated well off the track.   I was out visiting my old SB today after I feed.  He turned 27 this year.  He has lost most of his muscling but he is still special to me.  I brush him and ask him how did we get so old!  There will never be one quite as special as him.  Always did what I wanted and went any where, never kicked or bit or had a foul spirit.  We bought two horses from a co-worker this summer and I suspect the bay is a Standardbred.  Keep us posted on your new guy.

Sorsha really likes her ICB now too. I'm gonna try our new guy in it soon, and we'll probably be ordering another one for him :) we need another one anyway,  my poor old Paso's been using a hackamore since sorsha took his bit...lol :(

I have heard that they are really great horses. I think I would like to have one. Just wondering, is it better to have a pacer or a trotter if you are trying to get it to rack?

I love this photo!  She's like,  'Hi!'  And he's like,  'Where am I and where did the race track go?!'  He's just figured out he's not in New Zealand!  Congrats on your new fellow!

tshorselover..yes they are very nice horses, they are very desensitized from an early age, their used to a lot of stuff going on around them. The two we have were strait off the track and pretty much right to the trails. We just climbed right on and they were fine with it.  Sorsha, my mare rides the trails as if she had done it her whole life and I just got her last winter, she's our baby at age 7.

As for a pacer or a trotter, I go for the pacers, just because I don't want to trot and they are capable of racking if you know how to bring it out. I'm still new at bringing the rack out so I hope our two will be racking one day.

Oh and thanks TessieBagain, we love our new treasure from the track, it feels good to give them a new happy life after they have worked so hard. Our gelding is now getting used to not being stalled all the time, I can tell he likes his new freedom.
