"I much prefer barefoot but her soles are so flat and tender, any rocks are a problem." Not that you are, but don't be afraid of shoes hon, your horse will very much appreciate it. Get a good, competent farrier (unless you already have one), and do it. It's not the end of the world to have your pony shod contrary to the current trend of total barefoot at all costs ;), and you and your ponys' confidence will skyrocket. T.

I know when I had to shoe Sunny that one time, she gained a lot of confidence, gaited faster/better and got even more bold over the jumps. I even thought about re-shoing her. But the problem is, the guy that did her shoes last time went back to Denmark, and even my current farrier who is an amazing old time farrier that really knows his salt, said he couldn't shoe as good as Stendor did. So since she's got great feet barefoot. I'm keeping her barefoot, atleast until Steindor ever comes back.

My durable little Paso packed me around for several more hours each day this weekend, with little complaint. Thankfully, his feet- shod- gave him no trouble. I know if he were not shod, he would have been griping about the dirt packed trails. Saturday, he got ridden again in the late afternoon, as I brought my young horse with me and wanted to ride him out, so had another rider take the Paso for company. My young horse is still unsettled, he didn't spook except for when the Paso did, but he never relaxed and he was fidgety. This was our last test of the season. There are a couple more, but I finished my Junior dog; now I have a Senior-in-training, and a wanna-be Master that thinks 'backing' means to run up the spine of the pointing dog... It's getting hot down here now, and I was able to bathe my horses after riding this weekend. Having clean horses again is SO nice!

quail: I was JUST thinking last night that I can't wait for warmer weather, he was covered in mud from head to toe and brushing it off was futile. My pony LOVES to roll in red clay/mud and he has plenty of white to show off his talents! He desperately needs a bath but I do not have hot water so I have to wait and rely on the curry comb and elbow grease in the mean time. Regarding shod feet: ditto! My pony is more confident over gravel and rocky terrain when he's shod, and it's so much more comfortable for him. When he's comfortable, I'm comfortable; we're both happier and that's always a good thing tu1 T.

Last year it was too cold most of the year, even in the summer, to give the horses a bath with just cold water. I'll let you guys know how it works. I had a farrier out on Saturday who does gaited horses and has been a farrier for many years. He checked Lady's hooves out thoroughly and said they weren't sensitive at all. He gave me some Durasole to try out (you paint it on the hooves). He said she shouldn't really have any problems with gravel and rocks as far as soreness. I guess I'll keep the boots.

Are you still looking for a horse? My sister was planning to buy my 4-yr-old reg. buckskin MFT mare, but is concerned that she will soon loose her job, and no longer feels that she can afford to own a horse. If the filly does not find a new owner, I will keep her and offer her 1/2 brother (my personal horse) if he is more appealing to a new owner, instead. He is a 5-yr-old reg. sorrel/white tobiano pinto MFT. Both are beautiful and if I could afford to keep both, I would never think of selling one. It broke my heart when my sister called to say that she no longer could afford the little girl. Email me privately if you are interested @ calidan_ibn_rey@hotmail.com. We are in SC.
