MelissaF, I wonder if there's some kind of glitch here. Your post is exactly what Brenda said earlier. Anyway, I've been riding him and he still is a handful but because I know where he's coming from we're able to work through it. Took him to the SP over the weekend, rode 6hours sat. & about 3hours sun. He did real well w/only a few bad moments. Took him down the road last night & of course the neighbors calves had to come bucking and running to the fence. He definately had a problem with that! We worked through it though and it was good for him. The key is just to wait 'til he's ready. It's just that simple. Don't prod or discipline or put him to work, just wait.

Hi Lakota, I had a horse that did exactly what you describe; he would freeze up and refuse to move or back away wildly. The solution I found was to retrain him, walking him at the hand with a helper walking behind, carrying a sturdy crop. I would halt him and then give the cue to walk (light touch at the spot where your feet would be). The slightest hesitation and the helper would whack him on the rump, making him jump forward. Then we taught him to back-stop-forward, still at the hand. When this was working like clockwork, without whacking, I started riding him again after about a week, still with the helper behind (on a horse now). Same procedure, slightest hesitation after forward cue and whack! After a while we would gallop, straight out of stand still, which got him very excited and rearing to go forward. It took 2 weeks training and then the problem was gone and never returned. Worth a try.
