Hardware Ranch is a state owned ranch in Northern Utah. It's about an 90 minute drive from my home. The department of wildlife operates it as a winter safe haven for the resident elk herd. They feed the ek during the winter months in an effort to attract the elk to thei land vs letting them forage on neighboring farms.

During the summer they allow grazing permits to graze cattle on the hills around the ranch and they cut the grass hay in the bottoms ans store it for the elk in the winter. Since it's state own or public land it's open for pubic use.

We parked at where Rock creek crosses the highway and headed up.  I had not ridden in this area for about 12 years. So I was excited to renew my knowwledge of the area.

Hay fields

It was cold enough in the morning that we had jackets on as we left the trailer.

The trailer heads uphil from the road.

You immeadiately find yoursef riding amongst hills covered in wild flowers.

Lots of natural water for the horses to drink and for us to school horses on crossing

It didn't take long for the sun to warm us and we stripped off the jackets

We stopped by a nice stream and eate lunch

It's beautiful country, but not a place to get much gaiting done. Lots of steep hills covered in rocks.  But it's a good place to get the horses schooled.  Lots of water crossing, dead fall logs,  trails crossing steep hillsides.

And while we didn't do much gaiting, we do get to work on neck reining, moving the hind end over and side passing and the horses do get to learn how to collect up and get their feet under themselves.

Wow! What a beautiful ride you've shared with us. Thanks so much! For us flatlanders here in the Midwest this is just breathtaking....and, I sure do agree with Brenda!

Hey ph,

Have you done the Antelope Island ride?  Is it worth the 7 hour haul to do?

Looks awesome!  Our grand kids live in SLC so we do come up regularly, but we usually leave the horses home.  :)

You keep us up to speed on your great adventures.   Do you ever get a gaiter that is cowy?  I've had several, but it is almost like the instinct to herd was bred out, or not in....y'know what I mean?

Antelope Isand is a great place to ride in the winter.  It's 20 minutes from my house and I ride out there a lot during the winter. The Great Salt lake moderates the temperatures, it doesn't get the snow that the wasatch front gets, So I can ride there when the snow is too deep on the mountain. It has a large population of Buffalo  ( around 600-900 animals) lots of antelope, deer, a few bighorn sheep and you occassionally see coyotes. It has a lot of good footing for trails. I can ride my horses barefoot on the island.

But I  would not haul horses 7 hours to ride on the island.  The park service requires you to stay on the trails.  So you are limited to a 14 mile down the shoreline and back or the several loops on the higher ground.  You can only access a portion of the island.  There are very few trees, so there is no shade in the warmer months.  The Great Salt Lake produces an abundance of bugs that all seem to attack and bite.

I rarely go  on the island after the snow starts to retreat up the mountain side. For me it's just a place to keep the horses legg'd up during the winter. There are so many great places to ride between you and me. But if you are up here to see the kids.  Why not go for a ride on the island. But not during the summer.

Hey,

When you were in the Bryce area, did you ride Proctor canyon?  If you didn't, we've a cabin out there (glorified tent) and go there during the summer months when it is too hot in the desert.  Just keep in touch buddy, there sure are lots of great places to ride.

The local BCH have created several great equestrian trailheads that criss cross the desert from spring to natural spring so that the area can be crossed in 4 days by horse.  If you've been down the Paria you've seen some great stuff.

There might be one or two...lol...more you still ought to see.   Keep up the great work.  Your experience and good horsemanship make you a great example and a tremendous asset on the board.

Thanks,

There is a LOT of Southern Utah I need to explore.

I've ridden an endurance race put on by the Duck in Mt Carmel.  Used to ride a lot around St George when my mother-in-law was alive and living there. ( drop my wife off to see her mom and I'd disappear into the hills). I have ridden with friends over in the 4 corners area on the Abjo and LaSal mountains. Spent a lot of time exploring the San Rafael looking for Big Horn Sheep. Have wandered around the Boulder top on the Aquarius Plateau looking for Elk.

But most of my riding is in Northern Utah and South Western Wyoming.

My wife likes to travel and tells me I need to see the castles along the rhine in Germany, I remind her she needs to see Square Top in the Wind Rivers. And we reach an impass.

I NEVER in a million years would have imagined Utah looking like that! When I visualize Utah I see big rock formations (kinda like the grand canyon), the Osmonds and Mormons. Wow. Was I surprised when that first pic loaded! Gorgeous! Green grass everywhere!

The beauty of Utah is that we have all types of terrain. High wilderness mountains that I ride in the summer and fall,  Desert canyons ( see my Color Country  post a few weeks ago) Where I can ride in the Winter and Spring.

All of these choices relatively close and easy to access.

This is one of Whatarack's favorites. Red Castle in Uinta Wilderness.

Hey kids,

It doesn't matter so much where you ride.  Just ride, and make your relationship with your horse stronger, and healthier.  I ride up and down the streets too.

Lookin' through horse ears...the world is a great place no matter where you live.

I ride streets mostly too. I've been on the Michigan shore to shore ride many times, but haven't been for some time since our son started school.

Hey,

It is sad that we limit our own experience with reasons to  not  ::) ride, when even a short ride sure beats no ride at all and when ya can't ride, do groundwork, get some horse dirt under your nails, I don't even mind scooping the poop and am grateful to do so, because I can.

Life is a great adventure, go gett'em.

This is the best place to camping actually, it is an eye-catching and warm place. Actually, I am preparing to take my vacation in different places. So, I am looking for a good tent that it is easy to set up. Event Tents. SEO Services

The pictures are beautiful.  I never thought of Utah as green and pretty either.   If I lived in a place like that, I would not work, I would just ride and ride.  We do take advantage of places to ride and we are fortunate enough to travel a little way to do so.  Right now we are feeling the effects of riding and camping all summer.  We have a pitely pile of  damp fire wood for our stove trying to get it to burn.  My husband calls us grasshoppers because we rather ride (because we can) than prepare for the winter.  Whew, although it is cold I don't regret those rides when I should have been gathering in wood!
